    275. – PART ONE 275. Clifford (1994) Okay, here’s the deal: I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but if you are anywhere near a television right now I need you to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and go watch “Clifford” on HBO Max. This is another film that has a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes which just leads me to believe that all of the critics who were popular in the nineties didn’t have a single shred of humor in any of their non-existent funny bones. I loved this movie when I was seven, and I love it even more when I’m thirty-three. It’s genius. Martin Short (who at the time was forty-four) plays a ten-year-old hyperactive nightmare child from hell. I mean it, this kid might actually be the devil. He is straight up evil, conniving, manipulative and all-told probably causes no less than ten million dollars-worth of property damage. And, again, the plot is so simple – he just wants to go to Dinosaur World. There are so many comedy films with such complicated plots and motivations for their characters, but the simplistic genius of “Clifford” is just this – all this kid wants on the entire planet is to go to Dinosaur World. That’s it. The movie starts with him and his parents on an plane to Hawaii for a business trip, and Clifford knows that Dinosaur Land is in Los Angeles, therefore he causes so much of a ruckus that the plane has to make an emergency landing.

David Rabe’s Good for Otto Gets Star Studded Cast With F. Murray Abraham (Barnard), Kate Buddeke (Jane), Laura Esterman (Mrs. Garland), Nancy Giles (Marci), Lily Gladstone (Denise), Ed Harris (Dr. Michaels), Charlotte Hope (Mom), Mark Linn- Baker (Timothy), Amy Madigan (Evangeline), Rileigh McDonald (Frannie), Kenny Mellman (Jerome), Maulik Pancholy (Alex), Rhea Perlman (Nora) and Michael Rabe (Jimmy), will lite up the star in the New York premiere of David Rabe’s Good for Otto. Rhea Perlman took over the role of Nora, after Rosie O’Donnell, became ill. Directed by Scott Elliott, this production will play a limited Off-Broadway engagement February 20 – April 1, with Opening Night on Thursday, March 8 at The Pershing Square Signature Center (The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre, 480 West 42nd Street). Through the microcosm of a rural Connecticut mental health center, Tony Award-winning playwright David Rabe conjures a whole American community on the edge. Like their patients and their families, Dr. Michaels (Ed Harris), his colleague Evangeline (Amy Madigan) and the clinic itself teeter between breakdown and survival, wielding dedication and humanity against the cunning, inventive adversary of mental illness, to hold onto the need to fight – and to live. Inspired by a real clinic, Rabe finds humor and compassion in a raft of richly drawn characters adrift in a society and a system stretched beyond capacity.

  • Former Student Acts in Popular Touring Musical
Oakland University - News Archive - Former student acts in popular touring musical Thursday, May 20, 2004 Former student acts in popular touring musical By Jeff Samoray, OU Web Writer Dave Havasi is living out his dreams, and they’re every bit as good as he imagined. Formerly a student in Oakland University’s Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, Havasi now is performing with one of two touring productions of “The Producers” with music and lyrics by Mel Brooks. Not only has Havasi had the chance to play multiple characters in this Tony Award-winning musical, he also understudied with Martin Short and worked with Jason Alexander during the show’s stay in Los Angeles. “This is what I’ve always wanted to do,” said Havasi by phone from Florida, where the cast has a three-city engagement before heading to Washington, D.C. “Performing is a dream job. It’s like when you’re a kid and say you want to be an astronaut or NBA basketball player when you grow up. I love going out every night to perform for tens of thousands of people. It’s a great feeling to work with talented people and a great management team – everybody wants that in their profession. It’s not been easy, but I really couldn’t be happier.” The role represents a high point in a series of more challenging and rewarding jobs for Havasi, who studied at Oakland from 1996-98 before finishing his degree at Marymount Manhattan College. Since graduating, he’s appeared in off-Broadway productions of “Smokey Joe’s Café,” “Damn Yankees,” “Beguiled Again” and worked with the Strouse family on the musical “Stolen.” He also continues to model and do commercials.

  • Martin Short Judge, Canada's Got Talent
Martin Short Judge, Canada’s Got Talent Martin Short was born in Hamilton, Ont., where he lived and worked until graduating from McMaster University with a degree in social work. His comedic talents were undeniable, and his prowess for slapstick supreme. It was no surprise when he chose a career in comedy. He started out small, with tiny roles on American television. He appeared in two series, The Associates and I’m a Big Girl Now. His first big break came in 1982 in the form of a role on SCTV: Network 90, the American version of the hit Canadian comedy series SCTV. After one year, he returned to his country of birth to appear in the original SCTV. Short won an Emmy, a Gemini, and the Earl Grey Award for his work in SCTV. The show brought him to the attention of the country and also to fellow Canuck-turned-television producer Lorne Michaels. Short was lured south of the border once more to appear in Michaels’ Saturday Night Live, where he stayed for only a year. The year was enough, however, for Americans to take notice. Short was ready for bigger things, and bigger screens. Short got his big-screen debut in Three Amigos, a film which starred fellow SNL alums Chevy Chase and Steve Martin.Since then, he has been on a steady roll and has continued to appear in comedic films. Short usually appears in co-starring and supportive roles, such as the character of Franck, in Steve Martin’s Father of the Bride films. Along with his feature film work, Short has also always had a penchant for the stage.
