ANDREW SINGLETON The rise and fall of the Pentecostals The role and significance of the body in Pentecostal spirituality he body has always been centrally important to Christianity. Michael TFeatherstone (1991a: 182) observes that prior to the twentieth century, Christians predominantly glorified the soul and suppressed the body. For close to two thousand years, in the pursuit of greater intimacy with God, the physical body has been ordered in particular ways during worship (e.g. kneel- ing during prayer), or disciplined and denied as part of daily religious prac- tice (e.g. fasting, self-flagellation). Giuseppe Giordan (2009: 228) notes that Christianity has controlled the body ‘through a complex system of rules, rules governing everything from sexuality to dreams, from food to desire, from work to emotions, from medicine to dress, from birth until death, including even the celebration of mourning’. In the final century of the millennium, however, a discernible shift has taken place in popular religious practice away from ordered asceticism to an eager ‘consumption’ of the power of God, especially in the Pentecostal and charismatic churches. In Australia, the UK and Western Europe, Pentecostals are one of the few Protestant groups to have grown in the past two decades. Within this tradition the body is not subordinated to attain a higher spiritual- ity, rather spiritual experiences are openly signified through the ‘out-of-con- trol’ body. The body is the site where the ‘power’ of God is manifested through the believer (as is the case with speaking in tongues). With experiences of this kind the worshipper is overcome by the ‘power’ of God, rather than in- stigating the bodily experience themselves, as is the case with swaying during prayer, fasting or liturgical dancing. -

For two hours 150 men, women, and children have waited for the evening’s climax. Earlier, during the first hour, the assembly had enthusiastically sung along with and danced to the music of the host worship band while waving bright-colored flags, jumping and clapping to the fast starter tunes, later slowly swaying or prostrating themselves during the slow intimate songs. The guest evangelist had next climbed the platform to give the evening message, starting first with light banter that loosened the people up to likeableness toward him. Like an airplane pilot in new territory circling for a landing strip, his preaching rambled until it found the pulse of the people. As such, the message was anecdotal, one story after another, salted and peppered with scripture verses, and vigorously presented by pacing the aisles and gesticulating with body and face. All this was preliminary. Minds, bodies, and emotions take preparation and time to put off the cares and trials of the day, to cast off self-consciousness and timidity, to open up in trustfulness and expectancy to the ministering leadership, that is, to be kindled to receptivity to The Holy Spirit. As the time ripened, the evangelist transitioned his message that announced that time for personal ministry was soon to commence. Like a whiff of wind fanning across a field of wheat, the crowd began to stir… as a swarm tensing to storm the stage. -

Pentecostal and charismatic1 churches generally embraced the revivals at Toronto (1994), Pensacola (1995-2000), Lakeland (2008), and Mobile (2010) as genuine works of the Holy Spirit, but non-charismatic Christians are often unsure of what to think. On the one hand, Christians do not want to be so gullible that they believe any miracle report or legitimize any manifestation as authentic. On the other hand, Christians do not want to attribute the work of the Holy Spirit to the flesh or to the devil. Evaluating any revival movement is therefore a serious undertaking, but conclusions must be drawn after close inspection. This paper will argue that the Toronto Blessing, from which the subsequent revivals were spawned, was not a genuine revival of God because of its promotion of signs and wonders (in place of repentance and salvation), its misguided emphasis upon the Holy Spirit (in place of Jesus Christ), and its counterfeit manifestations which are not from the Holy Spirit. -

STATEMENT DP-244-1 THE COUNTERFEIT REVIVAL* (Part One): RODNEY HOWARD-BROWNE AND THE "TORONTO BLESSING" by Hank Hanegraaff Summary Christianity is undergoing a paradigm shift of major proportions — a shift from faith to feelings; from fact to fantasy; and from reason to esoteric revelation. Leaders of this Counterfeit Revival, such as Rodney Howard-Browne and John Arnott, have peppered their preaching and practice with fabrications, fantasies, and frauds, seemingly unaware of the profound consequences. Many of the followers who at first flooded into Counterfeit Revival "power centers" have become disillusioned and have now slipped through the cracks into the kingdom of the cults. John the Apostle warned, "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1). This warning is particularly relevant today, as Christianity is undergoing a paradigm shift of major proportions — a shift from faith to feelings; from fact to fantasy; and from reason to esoteric revelation. This paradigm shift is what I call the Counterfeit Revival. Prophets of the Counterfeit Revival claim that a bloody civil war is going to polarize the entire Christian community. On one side will be those who embrace new revelations. On the other will be those who obstinately cling to reason. One "prophet" went so far as to say, "God is going to renovate the entire understanding of what Christianity is in the nations of the Earth....In twenty years there will be a totally different understanding of Christianity as we know it."1 Some of the most recognizable names in the Christian community are endorsing this paradigm shift with little or no reservation. -

What follows is a synthesis of news reports from the Evangelical Alliance’s extensive press archive, from the various books and articles mentioned in the Bibliography, and from pertinent sound and video recordings. 1954 – On the basis of a vision which will later be detailed in his autobiography, Ploughboy to Preacher, Strict Baptist pastor David Obbard implies that revival might break out in the year 1994. Obbard has been studying Ezekiel 37, and, as he will go on to recall, ‘It came to me I this way; that as bone came to bone, so there would be a revival of interest in the doctrines of grace, which are surely the framework of the true church, but this would not bring revival itself. Also, as the the sinews and flesh came upon them, so there would follow a revival of true biblical order and experimental spiritual life, but neither would these things bring revival. Following this there would be a mighty movement of the Holy Spirit, the breath of God, and the church would be raised from its lifeless state to that of an exceeding great army.’ Obbard will go on to reflect that as this conviction came upon him, ‘there was presented to my mind the figure of twenty-year periods; twenty years for the bones to come together, twenty years during which Bible-based churches of born-again believers would be established on a world-wide scale, and some time during the next twenty years [ie. -

The Vineyard movement is a growing expression within the evangelical Protestant tradition that seeks to combine the core doctrines of Evangelicalism with the experience of the gifts of the Spirit that is often associated with Pentecostalism. As a relatively new faith expression, the Vineyard has not received a great deal of academic interest, and thus much of its core theological commitments have not yet been explored. I shall argue that the central theological distinctive of the Vineyard is their understanding of the inaugurated, enacted, eschatological kingdom of God. -

The Three Waves of Spiritual Renewal of the Pentecostal-Charismatic Movement Emil Bartoş* The study focuses on the historical dogmatical analysis of the three waves of spiritual renewal which started in the early twentieth century and affected most Christian denominations by focusing on the manifestation of the spiritual gifts. The author will identify the major historical dogmatical influences of the Pentecostal-Charismatic movement, the characteristics and the leaders of the movement, as well as the directions of development on the personal and on the community level. Keywords: Pentecostalism, Charismatism, Neo-Charismatism, spiritual gifts, baptism with the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues Undoubtedly, the most important Christian spiritual movement of the last decades (some would say of the last century) is the Pentecostal-Char- ismatic movement. The current estimates show that the movement has raised over half a billion faithful Christians from all the major Christian denomi- nations, most of them located in the southern hemisphere (South America, Africa and Asia).1 Pentecostals derive their name from Pentecost (Pentecost in Greek) – the Descent of the Holy Spirit or the birth of the Church which was marked by the manifestations of the miraculous spiritual gifts (speaking in tongues, prophecies, healings). Pentecostals and Charismatics do not think Pentecost is repeatable, but they think that the mighty spiritual manifesta- tions that have accompanied the event are repeatable and desirable for all the Christians throughout the Church history. Evidence of the special manifestations of the Spirit is spread through- out the entire history of Christianity. Even though this evidence is sporadic and sometimes there are inconsistencies, it is present as realities historically written. -

Introduction Despite the numerous theories on the secularization and de-Christianiza- tion of the Western world, «in the third millennium, like the first, the faith would once again be a truly transcontinental phenomenon», in particular «Christianity is doing very well indeed in the global South – not just sur- viving but expanding», as Philip Jenkins maintains in his book The Next Christendom. The Coming of Global Christianity (2007)1. Globalization, the interaction between different religious cultures through migratory flux and the formation of new world political and economic equilibria, have resulted in the blurring of traditional borders between Christian confessions and their relationship with contemporaneity. In fact, the increasingly rapid and wide- spread expression of the Protestant world over the past two centuries is what is intended here, in the broadest sense, by evangelicalism – the transversal re- awakening of the Protestant churches – and one could therefore also include Pentecostalism as well as the charismatic and neo-charismatic movements2. Its main features consist of conversion or being “born again”, witnessing the faith through a range of evangelistic activities, with a particular focus on Bible readings, often accompanied by very literal interpretations. The purpose of this paper is to explore the evangelical world in general, however its main focus is to analyze the factors behind its dissemination and global success.
