2018 Baccalaureate 45th Commencement Celebration Thursday, May 3, 2018 12 Noon William J. Seymour Chapel at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary 1435 N. Glenstone Avenue, Springfield, Missouri Baccalaureate Program accalaureate at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (AGTS) Backnowledges several streams of influence. The medieval academic tradition is part of the seminary culture, so there are measures of formality: robes that reflect various academic disciplines and certain ceremonial dimensions that are integral to this event. AGTS is firmly rooted in the Pentecostal faith tradition. We affirm worship that is celebratory and vibrant, and we welcome the dynamics of the Holy Spirit in our congregational life. We are committed to the redemptive ministry of Jesus Christ that is empowered by the Holy Spirit. These elements of the Pentecostal tradition are also integral to the AGTS baccalaureate. AGTS is committed to thoroughness in graduate theological education. Ceremonial dimensions of this event acknowledge our graduates’ significant achievements in study. When students join our college community, they are expected, as apprentice scholars, to search for truth with integrity and accuracy. This quest requires humility about our abilities, respect for the ideas of others, and originality in our thinking. Since Vanguard University is a Christian community, the integrity of our scholarship is rooted in the integrity of our faith. We seek to be followers of Christ in the classroom, in the library, and at the privacy of our computers. For both scholarly and spiritual reasons, then, plagiarism and all other forms of academic dishonesty are not to be pursued in the Vanguard community. In a scholarly and Christian community, each of us has a responsibility to encourage others to maintain their commitment to academic honesty. Faculty have a responsibility to educate students about refraining from academic dishonesty—in particular, plagiarism. Faculty should teach what plagiarism is, how to avoid it, and what the consequences of plagiarism are. In addition, as part of their evaluation of student assignments, they should check for evidence of plagiarism. If evidence is discovered, faculty should confront the student, apply the appropriate consequences, and report the incident to the Provost. Students have a responsibility to understand plagiarism and to learn how to avoid it. They should refuse to allow fellow students “to borrow” or to use an assignment without proper citation, encourage fellow students to do their own work, and refrain from completing assignments for their fellow students. -

Sbulife Spring 2007 SBU’S Global Society at a Glance: Students from Argentina, Ghana, Guyana, Japan and the United States
s we begin a new semester at SBU in the aftermath of what will be known in Southwest Missouri as the Ice Storm of 2007, we are all a bit more reflective than usual. Being without electricity, heat, food refrigeration, and/or water for days and days was a humbling experience for those of us used to these twenty-first century comforts, not to mention the indulgences we missed when we also experienced the loss of cell phones, Internet service, and cable television. As my family and I Ahuddled in front of our fireplace in the candlelight, I couldn’t help but think of all the places around the world where SBU sends missionaries. How many of these places have never had the comforts of electricity, running water, easily accessible heat and refrigerated food or the advantages of telephone service? Worse yet, how many places around the world have never had a Bible in which to find comfort on their dark and cold days? My family and friends were able to seek comfort from Scriptures and prayer as well as literal comfort in the many shelters set up in area churches. How dark our world literally would be without Christ and His people spreading His compassion and the Good News! For SBU to succeed in continuing to send out missionaries throughout the world and to prepare all students for the Great Commission responsibilities each Christian faces, we need to be mindful of the needs of our global society. Besides the breadth of a liberal arts education and the depth of study in their chosen academic field, what do students need to be prepared for effectively working in a global society? The bottom- line: Students need the ability to feel compassion for people who do not look or talk like them. -
