2 September 20, 2020: TǘdžǏǕǚFNJLJǕlj SǖǏDžǂǚ NJǏ OǓDžNJǏǂǓǚ TNJǎdž FǓNJdžǏDžǔ NJǏ Ǖljdž VNJǏdžǚǂǓDž In today’s gospel, Jesus is again trying to give us a better understanding of what the kingdom of heaven is like, using His traditional teaching tool, the parable. An analogous story based on common everyday events and human interaction. However, there is a bit of a problem for us with this story and how most of us perceive the injustice of its action and results.

Jesus tells the story of the landowner (God) who hires people (us) to work in His vineyard. He hires them starting at dawn and proceeds to hire more daylaborers at 9am, noon, 3 o’clock, and 5 o’clock, promising all a fair or just wage to which they agree.

The problem surfaces when the landowner pays His workers. Those who worked all day in the heat and those who came at the last minute are paid the same wage! Those who came at dawn grumble against the landowner who paid them the same amount as the latecomers who worked only one hour. The landowner reminds them they received a just wage which they agreed upon. He then poses a profound question to His early workers whom He calls “friends.” He asks, “are you envious because I am generous?” I think we try hard not to be envious, but regardless, this does not seem fair as judged by human sensibilities of “equal pay for equal work.” We often put ourselves in the position of the workers who toiled all day and feel slighted. But let us ask ourselves, would we be more pleased if we were in the group of latecomers? We would then become one of the last who became first!

The bottom line is we cannot judge God’s generosity, His immense and all consuming love for each of us and His hope for all humanity, by our human notions of what is right. We look to our first reading today from and gain an inkling of God’s loving generosity, how He thinks, and how totally loving God is toward each one of us: “As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways,” says the Lord.

So rather than worry over where we stand on the landowner’s list, best we count our blessings. Remember, the Lord has invited each of us to do more than hang out in the marketplace, He calls us friends, and sends us to work in His vineyard. We try, in these extremely stressful times, to remember where we are going. “The eye has not seen, nor the mind conceived of what magnificent treasures God has prepared for those who love him.” As we move into autumn with the stress of COVID still surrounding us, let us reach out with a kind word, and let us make time to work in the Lord’s vineyard!

May God bless and protect us all, Deacon Fran

RdžǂDžNJǏLjǔ: TǘdžǏǕǚFNJLJǕlj SǖǏDžǂǚ NJǏ OǓDžNJǏǂǓǚ TNJǎdž First Reading: Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near. Let the scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked his thoughts; let him turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.

Responsorial Psalm: The Lord is near to all who call upon him. Second Reading: Brothers and sisters: Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose. I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, for that is far better. Yet that I remain in the flesh is more necessary for your benefit. Only, conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ.

Gospel: Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’ So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, the landowner found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard.’ When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’ When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.” 5 Discount Self-Storage “There’s no place like home” Duncan MacKellar We make it possible to stay there.
