Teacher notes

Curriculum links: PSHE, Citizenship, Literacy Key Stage: Key Stage 2 Zone Relevance: Influences

Aim: These activities will help pupils recognise the characteristics which make a bully. They will also understand actions which could be considered bullying. The activities will begin in the realm and then extend into their own lives. These activities provide the opportunity to discuss your school’s behaviour policy for preventing bullying among pupils.

Background: There are many different definitions for bullying. This can be a hard subject to discuss with children but these activities enable you to use the Star Wars world as a starting point. Bullying can be defined as: ... repeated, aggressive behaviour intended to hurt another, physically or mentally. Bullying is characterised by an individual behaving in a certain way to gain power over another person. Severe bullying can lead to a feeling of terror on the part of the person being bullied*. It can be verbal (name- calling and threats), social (exclusion, gossip), physical (hitting, damaging property) or cyberbullying (using social media, text or email to harass). Bullying behaviours can range from: hitting, shoving, name-calling, threats, and mocking to extorting money and possessions. Some people bully by excluding others and spreading rumours about them. Others use email, chat rooms, instant messages, social media, and text messages to taunt others or hurt their feelings.
