Directions To UNC Finley Golf Course

From Eastern North Carolina and/or Raleigh/Durham International Airport: Take I-40 West to Chapel Hill. Stay to the left and follow I-40 West to Exit 273-A. Follow NC 54 West for approximately three miles. There will be a Finley sign on your left at the sixth stoplight. Go left and the club house is approximately 1/2 mile away. From North of Chapel Hill: Take I-85 South to Durham. Exit to the left at exit 174 onto 15-501 South. Stay to the left on 15-501 Bypass. You will make a left turn onto Old Mason Farm Road – there is a sign for both Finley and the N.C. Botanical Garden. The club house will be approximately one mile away. From Charlotte and West of Chapel Hill: Take I-85 North to I-40 East. 85 and 40 split at Hillsborough, just west of Chapel Hill. Take I-40 to exit 270 and exit onto Highway 15-501 South. Stay to the left on 15-501 Bypass. You will make a left turn onto Old Mason Farm Road – there is a sign for both Finley and the N.C. Botanical Garden. The club house will be approximately one mile away. From South of Chapel Hill: Take I-77 North to I-85 and then follow the same directions as from Charlotte. Or take I-95 North to I-40 West. 95 and 40 converge just north of Benson, N.C. Then take I-40 all the way to Chapel Hill and follow the directions from the airport (see above).

One of the top collegiate women’s golf tournaments in the nation, even-par 216 – Carolina’s Catherine O’Donnell and Wake Forest’s Jean the Tar Heel Invitational, is an annual event that takes place each fall at Chua and Natalie Sheary. A native of Marion, Iowa, Earley played collegiate golf at Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C. (1997-2001). In the fall of 2008, she, along with three other former athletes, was inducted into Charleston Southern’s Athletic Hall of Fame. She won four tournament titles during her four- year career as a Buccaneer, was the Big South Champion and Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000 and was named the 2001 Charleston Southern Female Athlete of the Year. Named the most valuable player all four years at Charleston Southern, Earley carded all top-10 finishes during her senior year. In addition, she was champion of the 2000 Iowa State Amateur. Kirkland Morgan assists the team during practice. Kirkland Morgan, a sophomore from Greensboro, N.C., will be serving as the team manager this year. She is an International Studies major and hopes to pursue a career in international nursing. Prior to coming to Carolina, Kirkland played four years on the varsity women’s golf team at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro. During her senior year, the team, coached by Anthony Long, won the 4A N.C. State High School Championship. Morgan assists the team during practices, helps with tournament preparation and will also attend many of the team’s tournaments serving as the team photographer among other things.

2008-09 HIGHLIGHTS

•The North Carolina women’s golf team finished seventh at the NCAA Championships, the highest NCAA finish in school history. Their previous best was eighth place – in 1989. 1992, 1993 (tie) and 1995. Carolina posted a 1210 total in the 72-hole event after posting rounds of 299-301-306-304 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Caves Valley features a par 72, 6,443-yard layout. This was the Tar Heels’ 12th appearance in the NCAA Championships and their 16th appearance at the NCAA Regionals since the regional format was instituted in women’s golf in 1993. Carolina tied for sixth place at the NCAA East Regional played at Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida in Gainesville to advance on to the NCAA Championships.

•Freshman Allie White, from Lancaster, Ohio, led the Tar Heels at the NCAA Championships, tying for 16th place with a 10-over-par 298 total. Senior Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., finished one stroke back at 299 and tied for 21st place. Freshman Catherine O’Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., carded a 306 to tie for 52nd place while junior Kate Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, posted a 312 to tie for 75th and senior Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., had a 319 total and tied for 104th. The freshman duo of O’Donnell and White led the Tar Heels at the NCAA East Regional as both tied for 15th place with eight-over-par 218 totals.

•Carolina was ranked 10th in the final Golfstat poll, 12th in the Golf World/NGCA (National Golf Coaches Association) Coaches Poll and 13th in the final Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.

•The Tar Heels carded eight top-five finishes this year and posted top-10 finishes in all 11 of their tournaments. Carolina was the runner-up at the ACC Cham- pionships, the Tar Heels’ highest conference championship finish since they placed second in 1994. Carolina was the runner-up on two other occasions – the Tar Heel Invitational and the Merdedes-Benz Collegiate Championship (tie for second).

•Catherine O’Donnell and Allie White, both freshmen, received Golfweek All-America Honorable Mention honors. Both were also selected to the 2009 All- ACC Women’s Golf Team. O’Donnell was chosen the ACC’s Freshman of the Year, the first Tar Heel to receive that honor since 1997 when Marcy Newton was selected the conference’s top freshman.

•Catherine O’Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., broke into the starting lineup in her freshman year and wasted little time in picking up her first collegiate win, tying for first place at the Tar Heel Invitational. O’Donnell carded six top-20 finishes and nine top-30 finishes. She was the low Tar Heel at the ACC Championships, tying for seventh place and tied for 15th at the NCAA East Regional. An All-ACC performer in 2008-09, O’Donnell was also selected the ACC Freshman of the Year and chosen a Golfweek All-America Honorable Mention. She boasts a 74.03 stroke average for the year. She fired seven under- par rounds, two in the 60s, and three rounds of even par.

•Allie White, from Lancaster, Ohio, broke into the starting lineup in her freshman year and it didn’t take long for her to make her mark on Tar Heel golf. She carded nine top-25 finishes last year. She tied for fourth place in Carolina’s first event of the year (Cougar Classic) and was the low Tar Heel at the NCAA Championships, tying for 16th place. White was selected to the All-ACC team and chosen a Golfweek All-America Honorable Mention. She boasts a 73.78 stroke average for the year, was named to the 2009 NCGA All-America Scholar team, fired six under-par rounds, three in the 60s and six of even par.

•Sydney Crane, a senior from Jamestown, N.C., concluded her Tar Heel career in fine fashion. She carded seven top-30 finishes including a tie for 16th place at the ACC Championships and a tie for 21st at the NCAA Championships. Crane had a 74.66 stroke average. She fired five under-par rounds, three in the 60s, and two rounds of even par.

•Lauren Hunt, a senior from Little River, S.C., capped her Carolina career with six top-30 finishes. Hunt had a 76.09 stroke average. She carded three rounds under-par and three rounds of even par.
