Sport Competition Manager - Hockey

1. JOB PURPOSE

In July 2022, will host the XXII , the largest multi- sport event to be held in in 10 years. Approximately 6,500 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories across the Commonwealth will come together in a 12-day celebration of sport and culture. Events will take place across Birmingham and the West Midlands, entertaining more than one million ticketed spectators and reaching a global broadcast audience of more than one billion.

Each of the signatories to the Host City Contract (HCC); the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), UK Government, and Commonwealth Games England (CGE) together with the Organising Committee (OC) have key roles role in the planning and delivery of the , both individually and collectively to ensure that the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the host community legacies derived from hosting the Games are a huge success.

The parties to the HCC have established Birmingham Organising Committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games Ltd as the Organising Committee (‘OC’). The scope of the OC’s role is broad and complex and ranges from ensuring the physical readiness of the venues and temporary facilities, to the planning, coordination and delivery of more than 40 operational functions such as transport, security and catering to meet the needs of the Games, including the athletes, technical officials, spectators, press, broadcasters and other Games Family and stakeholders.

The OC and partners are committed to delivering the Games as efficiently and effectively as possible to ensure the event is sustainable and accessible to all in the long term. We are seeking individuals to join us who are innovative, commercially astute and have a genuine passion and interest in delivering the most sustainable, inclusive and accessible Commonwealth Games to date.

The Sport Competition Manager is responsible for the planning and delivery of the competition of Hockey at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games in accordance with the sport’s International Federation’s rules and regulations. This will involve coordinating and communicating the sport specific requirements to internal functional areas, ensuring that athletes, team officials and technical officials are provided with the correct environment and services to perform to their best. The role will work closely with the other functional areas within the sport department to provide input into the individual sports requirements for; sport entries, sport equipment provision, training venues and sport information and publications.

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Responsibilities of the role will evolve during the lifespan of the Organising Committee and it is likely that the role profile will evolve with the changing needs of the OC.

• Lead on the Sport Competition operational planning for Hockey ensuring that the competition is organised and conducted in accordance with International Federation (IF) rules and regulations • Manage the development of each sport specific delivery plan, sourcing the required sport specific technical information and providing it to Games Functional Areas • Actively contribute to venue and operational planning to ensure sport specific technical elements are effectively integrated into Games wide planning • Ensure the Field of Play (FoP) for Hockey is designed and delivered in line with the required technical and competition standards of the International Federation • Manage the operation of the competition field of play, athlete warm-up and preparation areas at the competition venue and designated training venues • Foster relationships and communicate regularly with key stakeholders which include the International Federation and the associated National Governing Bodies • Work closely with the relevant English/UK Governing Bodies on the appointment and development of National Technical Officials

• Recruit, manage, train and deploy a large team of sport volunteers who contribute to the delivery of the competition • Support the development and implementation of key sport competition elements including the competition schedule, International Federation visits and operational policies • Support the completion of relevant sport competition milestones and project plans and related reporting, in line with the Games wide project plan • Contribute to the development and finalisation of the Detailed Competition and Activity Schedule (DCAS), in relation to identified sport specific competition elements • Co-ordinate the delivery of the official timing, scoring and results systems for the sport, in conjunction with the Technology Functional area • Responsible for the training, mentoring and professional development of the Assistant Competition Manager, ensuring they are provided with the skills and experience necessary for Games time delivery • Assist in the organisation and implementation of the Birmingham 2022 testing and readiness programme for the relevant sport(s) • Contribute to the Sport Competition FA’s documentation for the Transfer of Knowledge to future Commonwealth Games Organising Committees • Line management of the Assistant Sport Competition Manager and Technical Operations Manager(s)
