Each book in the series is a year- long process of getting to know the state and her people. So far, we have completed Arkansas, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia and Washington, and it’s always an adventure discovering the next state. My work is so much fun that if I didn’t make a living at it, I would never believe it’s a job. Our goal with the Eat & Explore books is that you experience each state like never before…. That you get to know the heart of the state—just as we do—as you explore the flavors that make the state special and discover the state’s communities, celebrations, and destinations that are waiting for your enjoyment Illinois, nicknamed ”the Prairie State,” has so much to offer. It’s marked by farmland, forests, rolling hills and wetlands. Chicago, one of the largest cities in the United States sits on the shore of Lake Michigan and is famous for its skyscrapers like Willis Tower and Tribune Tower. While 3 presidents were elected while living in Illinois, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and Barack Obama, only one president, Ronald Reagan, was actually born and raised in Illinois. He was elected while living in California. There is much to love about Illinois, and the nearest and dearest things are those that take me back to my childhood. Like the fact you can find a brass statue of Popeye in Sugar Park (page 123) overlooking the Mississippi River. Chester, Illinois, home of Popeye creator, Elzie Crisler Sega, has an Annual Popeye Festival every September to honor the beloved Sailor Man. Burl Ives was born in Jasper County, which is featured on page 135. Burl Ives has been one of my favorite stars for years. He was both a singer and a star in movies like Summer Magic with Haley Mills and is well-known as the voice of Sam the Snowman in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. No one has a voice as famous as Burl Ives, in my opinion. Eat & Explore Illinois • 7 In Metropolis (page 97), where heroes and history meet on the shores of the Ohio River, you can tour the Superman Museum and visit the 15-foot bronze statue in the middle of Superman Square. While there, you may want to take a walk through the underwater Boeing 727 airplane. Because one person does not a team make, I must recognize my awesome co-workers at Great American Publishers. Thank you Heather Bowman and Victoria Renegar for your dedication and for giving this book wings. Brooke Craig and Diane Rothery thank you for the leadership. Christina Jo Campbell, Christy Campbell, Tory Hackett, LeeAnn Leach, Tasha Monk, Zak Simmons, Nichole Stewart, and Daniel Wyndham you all work together to make this book possible; thank you. But most of all God is our driving focus; without Him nothing is possible and I am thankful for His hand in this book. My special thanks goes to the special man in my life, Richard Shaw. Thank you for putting up with my bad attitude when the book’s not going exactly as planned and thank you for sharing the good days when we are traveling states to meet, greet and sign books. (Take my word for it, he’s awesome.) Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to my daughter, Sheila and her husband Roger, the owners of Great American Publishers. You always have the faith and words of encouragement to help me through each day as I try to make each thing I touch and do in my life be a glory to God. Family means everything. Sheila and my son Mickey along with their families—Roger, Nic, Ryan, Shelbie and Trace, Frankie, Brooke, Bryce, and Morgan—are my blessings and highest praise I give to God. I am thankful too for each of you who buys the book, cooks the recipes and visits the places featured. Buckle your seat belt and let’s hit the road and start eating and exploring our way through Illinois.
