Arts Midwest Invests $359,288 in Minnesota

In partnership with the Minnesota State Arts Board, Arts Midwest provides audiences across Minnesota with enriching cultural experiences.

ARTS MIDWEST TOURING FUND

The Arts Midwest Touring Fund provides financial support to arts organizations in the Midwest to present work by touring artists.

Arts Midwest Touring Fund engages people in meaningful experiences with the fine arts of dance, music, theater or musical theater, and other performing arts forms. When we share creative experiences, we build powerful connections with the people we are closest to, with our community and the world around us, and with ourselves.

Grants of up to $4,000 are awarded to performing arts organizations to bring professional performances to their community. In FY18, Minnesota audiences experienced vibrant performances—from intricate orchestral music to energetic dance—and participated in community-driven activities. In the 2017–2018 performance season, Arts Midwest awarded $41,288 to 16 performing arts organizations in Minnesota. These activities reached 13 communities through 23 public performances and 62 engagement events.

ARTS MIDWEST SUPPORT TO MINNESOTA ARTISTS

While not including this number in the overall return on investment calculation, we want to highlight the fees earned by artists from your state via Arts Midwest Touring Fund and Global Exchange programs. No Minnesota State Arts Board funds were used to support these activities.

From May 16–31, 2018, Arts Midwest invested $99,700 to conduct the Arts Midwest Global Exchange program Dessa in China, which toured Minneapolis-based rapper, singer, and writer Dessa, along with supporting musicians Aby Wolf (Minneapolis) and Matthew Santos (), to Beijing, Chengdu, and Guangzhou, China. The artists conducted workshops and performances for hundreds of Chinese audience members, ranging in age from children to seniors. In sharing their stories and music and engaging in one-on-one conversations, artists and audiences examined their shared humanity through the similar themes that arose between their cultures.

Arts Midwest supported 8 projects featuring Minnesotan ensembles touring to other Midwest states during 2017 –2018. In total, these Minnesota artists earned $224,700 by participating in Touring Fund programming.

Arts Midwest World Fest connects small and mid-sized Midwestern communities to world cultures through week-long residencies with international musicians.

ARTS MIDWEST FOLKEFEST

Bringing traditional Nordic music to rural communities in the Upper Midwest

Arts Midwest Folkefest deepens awareness of the Scandinavian traditions, heritage, and history of the Upper Midwest through week- long residencies with traditional Nordic musical ensembles.

Beginning in fall 2017, Arts Midwest Folkefest is presenting residencies in small communities in six Midwestern states that experienced a significant influx of Scandinavian immigrants during the 1800s and 1900s and bear signs of this heritage today.

Over the 2017–2019 Arts Midwest Folkefest cycle, Chisholm, Minnesota, is hosting two engaging educational and performance residencies that feature Kardemmimit (Finland) and Emilia Amper Band (Sweden). The Midwest’s preeminent performing arts booking and education conference.

The only meeting of its kind in the Midwest, our professionals convened in Columbus, , from August Conference is committed to connecting arts 28–31st to network, conduct business, access in-depth administrators, strengthening the Midwest’s performing professional development sessions, experience live arts industry, and promoting the vibrant local arts scene in performances, and gain new insights into the world of the Conference city. ArtsLab provides professional development and networking opportunities in order to build long-term capacity for Midwestern arts organizations. Photo by Joshua Feist.

ArtsLab strengthens the impact of arts organizations in urban and rural communities through leadership and strategy development. ArtsLab seeks to nurture a vibrant regional arts ecosystem that ensures our cultural leaders have the skills, ideas, and mindset of adaptability and resiliency needed to thrive in a world of continuous change. Through in-depth training and peer-to-peer learning, ArtsLab cultivates a more effective and viable arts sector poised for community engagement.

To those ends, Arts Midwest invested $179,000 in Minnesota ArtsLab programming benefitting 19 Minnesota organizations who participated in FY18 in the following cohort.

Minnesota (Leveraging Creativity in Community) In FY2018, Arts Midwest created an ArtsLab peer learning cohort for 12 Minnesota communities, representing both Greater Minnesota and the Twin Cities Metro. This cohort, titled “Leveraging Creativity in Community,” convened teams composed of representatives from across sectors in each community in four multi-day retreats, supplemented by monthly webinar workshops. Activities were intentionally designed to help participants leverage arts and culture as key drivers in building vibrant communities. Over the course of the program, teams created strategic roadmaps outlining their goals, objectives, priorities, and next steps.

NEA BIG READ

An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.

Showcasing a diverse range of contemporary titles that reflect many different voices and perspectives, the NEA Big Read aims to inspire conversation and discovery. Annually, the program supports approximately 75 dynamic community reading programs, each designed around a single NEA Big Read book.

We were thrilled to present ArtReach St. Croix with a $14,000 grant to develop community-wide programs that encouraged reading and participation by diverse audiences in the 2017–2018 NEA Big Read cycle.

SHAKESPEARE IN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES

A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, bringing performances and educational activities to audiences across the country.

Shakespeare in American Communities is a national theater program that reaches middle- and high-school students in underserved schools throughout the by supporting high-quality, professional productions of Shakespeare’s plays and comprehensive educational resources.

In partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, we were able to present a $25,000 grant to the following Minnesota organizations to perform Shakespeare in the 2017–2018 cycle.

LEADERSHIP Arts Midwest draws on the insight, skills, and expertise of the Midwest arts community to inform and shape our programs and to ensure that our services nurture leadership among arts organizations.

Each year Arts Midwest convenes a summit of the state arts agency executive directors representing , , , Michigan, Minnesota, , Ohio, , and . In 2018, Arts Midwest expanded this summit to include a half-day training on accessibility and inclusion in the arts, creating an opportunity for accessibility coordinators and executive directors to delve into this important topic together.

Additionally, Arts Midwest hosts six bi-monthly phone calls each year for the leadership of the nine state art agencies in the region.

Through this effort, Sue Gens, executive director of the Minnesota State Arts Board, along with key staff members participate in leadership development and knowledge sharing with key professionals in the public art sector.
