Influenced by a new economic opportunities and challenges, changing ideas about redevelopment and the role of suburbs, and Tempe's own growth issues after 1960, Tempe leaders and citizens formed a distinct vision for downtown redevelopment. Modified over time, the redevelopment strategy depended on effective planning and financing, public-private collaboration, citizen participation, and a revised perception of growth. After 1980, the strategy gained momentum enabling leaders to expand their ambitions for downtown. Redevelopment manifested through riverfront redevelopment, art and culture, and historic preservation redirecting the city's growth, creating economic development, and revitalizing downtown as Tempe began flourishing as a mature supersuburb. The strategy showed considerable economic success by 2012 and the completion of the Rio Salado Project, the Tempe Center for the Arts, and the preservation of the Hayden Flour Mill made downtown an attractive and diverse urban destination. i DEDICATION To my parents, Arnold and Janet, for their lasting support and encouragement throughout my entire academic journey. -

Arizona Newspaper Directory August 2020 Arizona Newspaper Directory How to Use this Directory While researching the newspapers for the information in this directory I spoke to countless staff members about our cause, as I was trying to get two jobs done at the same time. I wanted to place ads free of charge for volunteers and also advertise our Friday Webinars. Most of the staff I encountered seemed hurried and disinterested but a few of them took the time to ask questions and offer advice. I’ve highlighted in yellow these few people, as they stand out as potential resources for AZELO. A good starting point when using this directory, would be to target these highlighted people first. This directory is meant to be a living document. Contact Marie MacWhyte at (360) 306-1532 (voice or text) or [email protected] if corrections or additions are needed. Like many other industries during our tumultuous times, the newspaper industry is an area of constant change, and only by continuingly updating this directory will we have a reliable resource. I’ve arranged the newspapers by county with the most populated counties appearing first. After county, comes parent company. I discovered that very often, several newspapers reside under one umbrella, with one classified ad manager, one event designer, and often one editor overseeing several newspapers, and a submission to one will make it into one or more newspapers, especially if you specify how much coverage you are targeting. Therefore, all newspapers under the jursidiction of one editorial staff are listed by parent company. -

Master of Arts (History), December, 2016, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas. Since first winning election as the Sheriff of Maricopa County in 1992, Joe Arpaio has cultivated an image as the ‘toughest sheriff in America.’ While Sheriff Arpaio has often been the subject of headlines and contemporary journalism, other than a handful of scholarly studies focused upon incarceration methods within Maricopa County, scant historical study has been devoted to Arpaio. The study will examine issues of race, ethnicity, conflict, and cooperation in the borderlands from the seventeenth into the twentieth centuries. Furthermore, the thesis will examine the mystique of law enforcement in the West, before finally exploring the confluence of all these factors that ultimately facilitated the rise, notoriety, and resiliency of Joe Arpaio as the Sheriff of Maricopa County. The research is taken from a combination of primary and secondary sources. The first two chapters rely heavily upon assorted secondary scholarly studies related to law enforcement in the West, race, ethnicity, and intermittent periods of conflict and cooperation in the borderlands. -
