John Mesite – Brookvale FC

John has been, and still is a major part of Brookvale FC and has gone above and beyond with our game over the last 56 years. John was born in 1951 and attended Christian Brothers College (CBC), John played football with the school from 1963 to 1965 alongside long time friend David Anglicas.

From 1969 to 1972 John was heavily involved with CBC as a coach, manager & committee member and in 1981 & 1982 John was a Manager of Grade (representative) Teams at Manly Warringah Soccer Association.

Over the years John along with his brothers Vince and Mario were foundation members of the Manly Warringah Representative Club helping lay concrete and install fencing at LM Graham Reserve, the home of the first Rep Football on the working hand in hand with the late George Dick, and later on with Charles Valentine when representative football moved to Inman Reserve, Cromer and ultimately .

In 1983 John became the secretary of Brookvale FC, and this is where he has been ever since. John (aka The Boss) organises everything from canteen rosters, field set ups, distribution of information received from MWFA, gear steward and a lot, lot more. Brookvale FC has grown from 1 team to over 70 teams in 2019, this growth has come from John’s commitment to our club and his relationships with our local schools.

John has also been on numerous Committees representing BFC and MWFA including the old Manly Council Sports Field Committee dealing with the development of Grahams Reserve and various Grading/Development Committees with MWFA.

John was also senior Vice President of Senior Men’s Football with MWFA for 6 years from 2006 to 2011.

We look forward to hearing of his acknowledgement as it is so richly deserved. His tireless work and commitment are second to none.

Vince Condomitti – Brookvale FC Vince has been in the club in some sort of capacity since day 1, being in 1962 when the club was known as manly Milan. He was on the original committee (and still on committee), as a player and team manager in those early formative years. He also assisted in the purchase of gear for his team

Upon the change of name of club to Brookvale FC in 1972 Vince continued in the committee with his eventual election as club President in 1999, a position he held until 2009, a 11-year reign. In those 11 years vince assisted in gradual progress in numbers of player registrations and teams which now sees the club having 989 registered players and 73 teams. He assisted on packing of gear and announcing of teams at our annual preseason junior orientation day. He has now 3 grand children playing in our junior ranks.

Vince was also team manager for our div 1 teams prior to reaching premier league status in 1981 for many years. More recently Vince has assisted the club greatly by raising funds for the entire club to purchase new playing shirts.

Vince and his wife, Mary are well known within the club for running social functions like their famous pasta nights to show their appreciation of players running out every weekend to play for Brookvale FC. Vince continues to be on the committee using his business contacts to secure vital sponsorships to raise funds for gear etc .

Helen Chambers – Beacon Hill FC Helen first became involved as a volunteer in Beacon Hill FC Football in 2007 when she first stepped up & managed her son’s U6 team, & Helen has continued to manage various teams for most of the past years up to & including this year.

In 2008, Helen stepped up for the role of U7 Coordinator to start off her first official Committee role & then continued with the U8s in 2009. In 2010 through to 2013, Helen then fulfilled the duties of assistant Junior Coordinator. In 2014 Helen managed the role of Youth Coordinator and continued to fulfil this role over the following 3 years.

In 2015 Helen as well as Youth Coordinator she added the role of assistant registrar for the Youth section & continued to do so for the following 3 years. In 2017 Helen took on the Amateur League Coordinators position whilst still continuing with the Youth registrar’s role.

In 2018 Helen had the role of Head Registrar whilst still handling the Amateur League Coordinators position& continued with the Head Registrars role for 2019. For the past 12 years Helen has attended most Committee meetings, been instrumental in setting up presentation days during her years of looking after the Youth.

Helen has also been heavily involved with the Youth Grading for the past 9 years. Beacon Hill FC Football feel Helen has been a great ambassador for our club & feel Helen is worthy of consideration for the MWFA Meritorious service award

Vince Roperti – Curl Curl FC Vince’s association with Curly started when his twins joined U6 in 2011 and at the same time he joined AL7 as a player and team manager. Vince has played and managed ever since, moving up to AL4 before going to O35.

Vince’s involvement in coaching started in 2015 - with his kids graded into different U10 teams he coached both and has continued to coach through to this year where he is assistant coach in both U14 and W15.

Vince joined the Curl Curl committee in 2012 as Senior Men’s Age Manager and continues in this role to this day. He added to this in 2018 with a management role within our AL1 team, continuing with them as they progressed to PL, and helping to forge a strong link between the PL players, coaches and managers and the rest of the club.

Vince joined the MWFA Defib working group when it was formed, helping drive participation in the defib gala day and the purchase of defibrillators.

Always the first to put his hand up when help is needed, both on the administrative side when committee members are away and down at Abbott Rd most weekends, Vince can be found putting up and taking down nets, cleaning up pitch-side, coaching his son and daughters teams or just cheering on Curly teams.

Vince has an enthusiasm for and commitment to soccer at all levels and is an asset to our club.

Jenny Roberts – Curl Curl FC Jenny is a quiet achiever and works behind the scenes running the Clubs administration. She has carried out many roles in our club such as registrar, results officer, merchandise manager, secretary to mention a few.

She has also been instrumental in setting up and organising of our JDT program and has run, for many years, the evening BBQ at the JDT. This program is one of our most successful to date and in in no small part this is due to Jenny’s hard work.

When Jenny registered her son Ewan to play football for Curl Curl just over a decade ago, she had no idea what would transpire.

After a few years watching her boy in green and gold, she answered a call from the clubs committee to fill the registrar role. They needed a registrar, so Jenny agreed. She did that role for 3 years. She then took on the secretary role in conjunction with the competition secretary for next 6 years. The last 3 years Jenny has represented the Club on the Executive Committee.

She is involved with our functions, events and charity fundraisers and assists our events co- ordinator with all of these events. Jenny has prepared and minuted all the Clubs meetings and prepared all the AGM’s agendas and minutes.

Jenny actions and distributes every email to all the relevant parties within the Club. Jenny also organises the Coaches Kits, ordering all the equipment, and ensures the entire club has enough equipment for each season.

Jenny basically commits herself full time from January until the start of the season to ensure the club has a smooth start to the season. If there a role that’s not filled Jenny will make sure it is, either by doing it herself or finding someone that can.

Jenny is cheerful, helpful, responsive and caring person, who, because of the person that she is creates respect from all with whom she comes into contact. Jenny takes the role very seriously, she is passionate and puts in a 110 percent effect and energy, she is the engine room for the Club, we don’t know what we would do without her.

Wes Ryder – Brookvale FC Wesley has been involved in football on the northern beaches since 1976 in some capacity, that is some 33 years and should be duly recognised. Wesley started play in 1976, as a 13-year-old, where he played for the old Manly Soccer Club for 2 seasons then moved on to Manly Vale Soccer Club where he stayed until 1993. In 1994 he moved across to Brookvale FC and has been there ever since, some 25 years with Brookvale FC he has many varied positions, and a brief history is a follows:

* played for club for many years with the highlight being involved in the goal that won Brookvale FC all age champion of champions competition in 1995. * countless coaching and managing positions for club, being 2019 manager of our successful 0/45 div 1 men’s team. Was coach when Brookvale FC won the O/35s men’s champion of champions comp in 2010. * various committee positions including a stint as a Club Secretary for 2 years whilst John Mesite recharged his batteries. * currently Wes is a club Vice President and Director of Coaching * like all clubs, Wes can be found most Saturday mornings at Grahams assisting in what every capacity required, especially when the Mighty U/6S are at Grahams * met his lovely wife Sara in 1994 through Brookvale FC and now has 2 great children.

ALL CLUBS NEED AND HAVE YOUR WES TYPES OR IT DOES NOT WORK

However, Wes real passion is coaching, especially coaching of coaches and has achieved the following * implemented the current Club Grading Policy and improving it every season * organised the current club grading committee, which meets regularly for planning and updates * recently gained his C coaching licence and is encouraging other Brookvale coaches to do the same * can be seen any Saturday or Sunday morning attending youth brooky games to assist coaches and talent identification * Wes , fully realises that Brookvale are weak in numbers and strength in the vital age groups for u/14 and u/15 Saturday morning comps and works on the theory if we have good coaches the rest will work out. If this can be achieved, Brookvale will have a great pathway for our players to make it all the way to premier league man and women. This is Wesleys goal.

MWFA REPORTS

Chairperson’s Report

I have enjoyed my first year of a 3 year term on the MWFA Board. In November 2019 it was an honour and great privilege to have been chosen by my fellow Directors to lead this group of talented individuals as the 2020 MWFA Board Chair. No one had any idea of the year that lay ahead of us. What a year!

The transmission from an Incorporated Association to a Company Limited with a Board structure rather than a Committee has been implemented in a seamless manner. The Board, MWFA, MWFRA, 17 clubs and administration team have all worked well together to ensure the system moved forward with no major issues. Then Covid19 hit. Covid19 most certainly proved to be a thorn in our side that constantly moved, and we had to adjust almost daily.

A massive thank you goes to our CEO Dave Mason, who was outstanding during this year. Not only keeping our clubs and players up to date, but he was also heavily involved with action groups assisting FFA, FNSW and other associations in developing strategies to lead the way forward. Dave your commitment and dedication is much appreciated by many. It was largely down to your communication and effort that saw MWFA increase the number of players for 2020 whilst may other association showed significant reductions.

As the 2020 season comes to a close, we can look back on a football year different to any other before it. Although we played fewer games, had reduced crowds with restriction to training procedures, the year in itself proved to be a success in as much that the players, clubs and MWFRA were all excited and happy to be back playing the game they loved.

It would be remiss of me not to thank the other MWFA Directors and MWFA committees, MWFRA, the 17 club committees and various volunteers who have given their time and efforts willingly throughout the year to enable our game to progress as it has. The MWFA administration team are most certainly a delight to work with. We are lucky to have such a dedicated and hard-working group of people that always seem to be happy and willing to go that extra yard in whatever they do. On behalf of the association clubs and members I offer you all a great big thank you. The MWFA Board will continue to streamline making it easier to register to play and reduce the red tape involved for the club volunteers in getting our players on the pitch in 2021. If you have any suggestions that may help in this area, please let us know. Enjoy a great Summer break and hopefully we can get back to normal in 2021.

CEO Report

2020 – A season we will never forget

2020 will go down as a season we will never forget. In fact, it is a year and a point in time we will never forget due to COVID-19.

While our world was turned upside down, I strongly believe that the COVID-19 disruption and the way we united as a football community will have long term positive benefits for grassroots football on the Northern Beaches.

The MWFA, our 17 clubs, the MWFRA (Referees Association) and Manly United all stood together to take on what was an enormous challenge and we can proudly stand here at the end of the season and give ourselves a collective pat on the back.

We trusted each other, relied on each other, helped each other and worked together for the good of the game and the players.

Was it perfect, no. But, we worked together to salvage a football season from a disruption that shut down countries and economies all over the world.

Some sports at grassroots level and some football competitions around Australia stopped completely, losing players by the thousands. We didn’t. We had a “can-do” attitude and not only did we get a season off the ground but we remained steady with our player numbers.

During the lockdown period we quickly readjusted our focus to work within the NSW Government regulations to organize as many games for all of our players.

It meant some tough decisions around changing borrowing rules, organizing midweek and school holiday rounds, putting a freeze on promotion and relegation and ensuring we organized training and matches in a COVID-Safe environment.

But it allowed us to return our thinking to the simple objective to organize and enjoy football matches on the weekends.

Congratulations to all Clubs, their committees, volunteers, players, coaches and managers for what we collectively achieved in 2020.

I’d like to particularly thank the Club presidents, the MWFA Board and the MWFA staff for helping us organize, readjust and reorganize matches, training schedules, COVID-Safety Plans and draws/competitions every time the NSW Government, quite rightly, changed the restrictions.

We officially ended the season with 18,386 registered winter players. While that number is 20 less than 2019, it is an enormously positive result in the face of the decline many sports and football associations suffered.

45 | Page

I would like to thank Football NSW, FFA, Northern Beaches Council and Mosman Council for their assistance in helping us get the competition started and remaining on the park.

While 2020 was about participation, we did run competitions with tables and hence, there were winners and losers.

Congratulations to Pittwater RSL Football Club for winning the Men’s Premier League Grand Final, Brookvale for the winning the MWFA Men’s Premier League Premiership and Manly Vale for claiming the Women’s Premier League Premiership / Grand Final double.

2020 was a tough year for the clubs without a team in the Men’s Premier League. Without doubt the toughest decision we made was around not having promotion and relegation due to the unevenness and unfairness of the 2020 competition.

While it effected all five clubs not in the Men’s Premier League, Forest Killarney and Beacon Hill in particular were extremely unlucky to not gain promotion or a playoff position after stellar years in 2020. Congratulations to Forest Killarney FC for taking our the Men’s AL1 first grade Premiership and Beacon Hill for claiming the AL1 first grade grand final. It was fitting that both clubs shared the spoils at the business end of the season.

2020 also saw a huge win off the park with the Women’s Premier League returning to a squad competition after several years as a single team competition.

The road back to a squad competition was challenging and at times difficult for many people who have put their heart and soul into women’s football but after some consolidation we returned to a squad-based competition with 8 clubs entering.

That number is almost certain to grow with several clubs working hard to develop some depth to be able to join the WPL.

One of those clubs could well be Curl Curl FC, who took out the Women’s AL1 Premiership from Belrose Terrey Hills, who could also push for inclusion in the WPL in the very near future. The Women’s AL1 Grand Final saw BTH run out 5-2 winners. Once again congratulations to both clubs for a fantastic season.

2020 also saw the Manly Warringah Football Association move to a new Board structure, following a two-year transition at the insistence of the NSW Government as we had grow to the point where we were too big to be an incorporated association.

Once again, the clubs and the MWFA Board worked together well to ensure a seamless transition.

The new structure meant a new Board but also the formation of two new committee’s, made up of volunteers from grassroots clubs.

A big thank you to the members of the Competitions Committee and the Registration and Grading Committee. They both played a huge role in ensuring our decisions were reflective of the desires of the clubs and players.

This year we also brought together the previous Judiciary, General Purpose Tribunal and the Protest and Disputes Committees into one streamlined Disciplinary Committee. I would like to sincerely thank David Wilson, Tony Cavalieri, Cas Greco, Ange Carey and Mark Gale for the role they play on a weekly basis.

The redevelopment of the Cromer Park Clubhouse stalled slightly during the COVID-19 disruption but the latter half of 2020 allowed us to restart that momentum to the point where we are about to engage builders and awaiting our Development Application.

I would like to recognise the dedicated MWFA staff for their hard work in 2020 under difficult conditions with the COVID-19 disruption. To Lee-Anne Sestanovich, Karon Saunders, Angela Crandell, Eugene Lawrenz and Sigrid Mulherin (MWFRA), thank you for your work throughout the year.

The MWFA would also like to acknowledge the work of the Manly United staff in supporting the MWFA staff and functions and keeping the entire Northern Beaches eco- system at the centre of all decisions to ensure unity drives the future prosperity and growth of the sport.

We continue to be a shining light for the integration of the grassroots and talented pathway programs and in the last 12 months have assisted Football NSW, FFA and several Associations/NPL Clubs in outlining how our structures assist the football players.

That was never more evident than in January when 7 local MWFA and Manly United juniors were part of the Sydney FC side that won the National Youth League Grand Final over Victory.

Levi Kaye (Pittwater RSL), Thomas Fay (Wakehurst), (Curl Curl), Jake Holman (Wakehurst), Patrick Wood (CC Strikers), Ben Koop (Forest Killarney) and Aaron Gurd (Wakehurst) all played their part in Sydney FC’s 5-1 victory.

On top of those 7 players, Harry van der Saag (CC Strikers) didn’t play because he was on the bench for the Hyundai A-League team that day and Cameron Peupion (Wakehurst) missed the game as he was in England, where he has now transferred to a professional contract with English Premier League side Brighton.

Cameron’s move to the EPL also started a new policy to reward grassroots MWFA Clubs with a percentage of the Training Compensation fee received by Manly United going back to his grassroots club - Wakehurst.

The tradition of cultivating talented young players will continue in 2021 with 11 Manly United youngsters moving onto the Sydney FC or Western Sydney Wanderers youth teams.

Despite this, Manly United continues to maintain its place in the top echelon’s of the NSW NPL Youth competitions.

We would like to thank the MWFRA, led by President Toby Williams for the way the referees worked with MWFA and the clubs to get the 2020 season played under COVID- Safe rules.

The greatest recognition is saved for the volunteers at our 17 Member Clubs that provide the heartbeat for our sport. From Club Presidents to the groundsmen, BBQ helpers to Committee Members; we would not be able to play each weekend without your tireless dedication and efforts.

2020 may have been a year to forget but it is also a year to remember for the way we dug deep to ensure we could continue to play football on a weekend.

Treasurers Report

Wow what a year we have had in 2020.

This year we have been on a COVID-19 rollercoaster, from playing numbers tracking to record levels prior to the lockdown in March, everything being put on hold without any idea of when football would return, to discussing the possibility of standing down staff and trying to understand what our financial results could be through numerous scenarios and updates of our forecast position to the resumption of football and the completion of a very successful season.

Despite all of these challenges, we have been able to deliver a result that no-one could have anticipated or predicted, I am pleased to advise that the MWFA has reported an operating profit before development levy revenue and grants of $390,424 for the year ended 30 September 2020 (following a loss of $146,325 for year ended 30 September 2019). In 2020, an additional $180,680 was collected for the facility and sportsfield development fund as compared to $160,500 in 2019.

The key points to note in this year’s results are:-

- Player numbers decreased to 18,360 from 18,406 in 2019, but due to a change in the mix of players, total registration fees collected decreased only marginally this year as compared to last year and the 2020 budget. However, given the COVID-19 pandemic, these player numbers is an outstanding result.

- We received government assistance via the JobKeeper grants and Cash Boost programs that amounted to $169,260.

- Due to the numerous cost savings and government funding initiatives that the MWFA was able to access, we were able to return $502,727 of these fees back to clubs to assist them with their financial losses associated with the impact of COVID- 19

• There were significant cost savings achieved, which included: - • Northern Beaches Council waiving the fees for ground hire and lighting that saved us $283,879. This generosity from the Northern Beaches Council was greatly appreciated. • Reduced fees paid to FNSW and FFA, which was only locked in within the last few days of September that saved the MWFA $180,845. • Reduced trophy costs, finals day expenses, equipment costs due to the changed nature of the season.

Net Asset Position and Budgets

The MWFA’s net asset position has continued to improve as a result of the improved trading result.

Given the extensive capital works that Northern Beaches Council have been undertaking on our playing fields, we have been reviewing our strategic goals that have set the parameters for future budgets and use of the development levies previously collected. As a result, the money held in facility and sportsfield development fund will be used to fund the proposed works to the Cromer Park building, which in return the MWFA will receive free access to the use of the Cromer Park building.

During the year, the MWFA signed an initial Memorandum of Understanding with the Manly Warringah District Soccer Football Club Ltd and Manly United Football Club to provide $1,000,000 in funding support for the upgrade of the Cromer Park building. In return, we will receive our office space rent free for 25 years with new, larger and improved office facilities.

As well, we will have a caveat over the building to ensure that Cromer Park building remains utilised for the football community for the foreseeable future. Due to the improved financial position of Manly United Football Club in 2020, I am pleased to advise the MWFA funding commitment to the Cromer Park building has been reduced to $700,000, thus allowing an additional $300,000 to be made available to the MWFA Member Clubs.

As at 30 September 2020, there was $1,068,606 (2019: $887,926) held in the facility and sportsfield development fund. As well, the additional funds received from late reduction in FFA and FNSW fees of $180,845 will be utilised to fund the MWFA contribution to Cromer Park building upgrade.

Other Matters

We have received the draft audit closing letter from John Watson of Watson Corporate Service, and he has not identified any significant matters to be addressed. There are some minor process improvements that we will implement soon.

Given the outstanding financial result in 2020, the MWFA Board has resolved to keep the vast majority of registration fees for 2021 (only the Men’s Premier League fees have increased) unchanged from 2020 while returning a more normal operating model for next year given the improving COVID-19 landscape that we find ourselves in.

50 | Page

Lastly, I would like to thank David Mason and Derek Turner for their efforts and support over the past year, which had so many challenges that none of us could have expected or anticipated. David in particular has stepped up too the many challenges that this year has presented, and he has provided me outstanding support and in a broader sense leadership to the MWFA Community since the COVID 19 Pandemic changed the world.

Lighting and Facilities Development in the Area.

Once the loan for the Stand and Cromer Park 1 upgrades was paid back in 2007 the MWFA determined to use the $10 per player levy collected every year to pay for lighting upgrades to bring as many fields as possible up to the standard required to play night games.

MWFA Coach Development Report

2020 was my second season with Manly Warringah Football Association, and I was able to make a lot of progress this year despite the challenges created by COVID-19. This includes a lot of new features on the MWFA website including a Coach Development Calendar, as well as various coaching resources for isolation training, return to play training and regular training, with even more still in development. Other highlights of the season are detailed below, and I’m looking forward to continuing and improving on all of these projects in 2021.

COMMUNITY COACHING COURSES

There was obviously a very limited time frame to schedule courses in this year, but we were still able run 16 official coaching courses (compared to 22 last year), catering to 220 coaches, with a couple more confirmed for the off-season. This number includes more than 40 female coaches, which at 18% of the total is actually an increase from 2019, thanks largely to the very successful Female Only MiniRoos course which was presented by 5 female Coach Developers.

I was also able to train up 8 new course presenters to grow the MWFA Coach Development Team to 13. I would like to thank all MWFA Coach Developers for their efforts and contributions in presenting these courses, as well as all of the clubs who hosted them, or even just helped with promotion.

COACH WORKSHOPS

There was also a very large increase in the number of unofficial workshops made available at both Cromer Park and various clubs (17 in total), with topics being presented based on feedback collected from MWFA coaches themselves at the beginning of the season. These gave another 220 coaches ongoing guidance throughout the season to complement their official course, or as their first exposure to coach education, more than double the total from the 2019 season.

We also ran another 6 Game Leader (volunteer parent referee) workshops catering to 70 people.

ADVANCED COACHING COURSES

We are currently preparing to host a Senior C-Licence in November, giving another 24 coaches the opportunity to progress through the first stage of the advanced coaching pathway. Given the rarity of this particular course, it gives us a great opportunity to raise the level of coaching in the local senior competitions, and in turn better develop the players too, which in turn would also mean better role models for both the players and coaches coming through.

A C-Licence Live Assessment Day also took place in February with 10 coaches participating, while we are currently working on organising another Youth C-Licence for February 2021.

FEMALE COACHING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

As part of the MWFA’s commitment to increasing the number of female coaches on the Northern Beaches, and support provided to female coaches, we were pleased to double the number of Female Coaching Scholarships available in 2020. Kiah Kennedy (Manly Allambie), Tess McGrath (Seaforth), Sai van Wegen (Wakehurst) and Marilinda Winter (Manly Vale) were selected this time around, and I look forward to working more closely with them next year as they look to share their new knowledge and support other female coaches at their respective clubs.

FUTURE COACHES PROGRAM

The Future Coaches Program looks as though it will be just as popular as last year, with several participants from the 2019 program returning as mentors in 2020 as well. These coaches will go through an intense personal development program together as a group, leading into one-on-one mentoring next season, to help each of them reach their potential and achieve their coaching goals. There were several great success stories from last year’s group, and this program has become one of the biggest highlights for me, because we get to see coaches progressing and achieving meaningful outcomes with their teams or in other football roles they undertake.

CCC PROGRAM

I would like to thank and recognise all of the hard work CCCs (Club Coaching Coordinators) put in this season to support their coaches and players. Many clubs in MWFA were still able to achieve good things and make progress with coach development in 2020, including creating new resources during the lockdown, providing an increased level of coach support at their clubs, and growing their team of CCCs. It is important to note that this is a flexible program that can be moulded to suit the needs of each individual club and their coaches.

MWFA is proud to see the CCC program continuing to thrive and grow on the Northern Beaches, and I look forward to seeing even more success stories with player and coach development in 2021, with the number of clubs engaged in the CCC program continuing to expand. This is probably the most important initiative established in the FFA Coach Education framework, and also what will make the greatest difference not only to the quality of players we produce in this country, but more importantly, the quality of the experience all of our players have (which will hopefully result in them staying in the game over the long term).

Coach development as an investment, not a cost.

I’d like to finish by again thanking everyone who supported coach development this year, and I look forward to working with you all again towards creating an even better football season in 2021. Have a great summer and stay safe.

Kind Regards,

Eugene Lawrenz Community Coach Development Manager

Manly United FC – Technical Director Women’s Football

2020 saw the Manly United FC women’s program field teams in the FNSW NPL Competition in grades 14, 15,17, Reserve Grade and First Grade.

This year, due to COVID, there were no finals played and whilst FNSW attempted to give all grades the normal number of 22 matches, not all clubs ended up completing all matches.

In the NPL1 Senior Grades, all clubs completed one complete round of matches and finals for top 4 positions were held. Our Reserve Grade finished 7th and First Grade finished 3rd.

Our First Grade women went on to win the NPLW GRAND FINAL, beating Sydney University 2-1, thus ending their unbeaten run of 32 games straight. This is the second time in 4 years MUFC First Grade have won the Grand Final. In 2017 they beat Macarthur Rams to clinch the title of NPLW Champions, and so capping off a very successful coaching role for Chris Williams.

11 of the 18-man First Grade squad this year were Manly United juniors and 8 of the squad have secured W-League contracts with Sydney FC, WSW and Newcastle Jets.

Our youth development programs, playing style, fair play, integrity and facilities are second to none, along with highly qualified, experienced and dedicated coaching staff, which is why we are often referred to as the ‘model’ women’s youth development program in NSW.

Once again I consider myself fortunate to have held the position of Technical Director of the women’s program at Manly United FC this year. Our players are a delight to work with from the SAP and Development Squad programs right through to First Grade. Most of them have learnt their trade at MUFC, many from as young as 10.

I know I speak for our coaching staff when I say that we are very fortunate to be charged with the responsibility of developing the best of the best on the peninsula and every year we work harder to do just that, whilst ensuring we have a balanced, nurturing environment where enjoyment and development is paramount, particularly in the youth grades. Believing in what we do, not veering from the script and working together as a unit is why we are at the top of the women’s game in NSW.

This year saw the 7th year of our Girls SAP (Skill Acquisition Program) and our 4th year of the full-time program in grades 10,11,12,13.

Our Girls SAP program is underpinned by four development squads for players registered in MWFA clubs – U10,U11, U12and U13.

We have a commitment to developing home grown juniors so that our senior squad continues to draw from our youth grades both in the short term and in the future and the Girls SAP is certainly providing the best platform for this to continue.

Unfortunately due to COVID, our TRY SAP Day could not go ahead this year for the local MWFA junior girls.

We are in the business of developing elite footballers for Manly United and beyond, whether that be the W-League or National Teams and I am proud to say we are on track.

Manly United FC – Technical Director Mens Football

The 2020 football season has been a long and unique one. COVID-19 disrupted the year in many ways with football no exception. Ultimately, we all were able to play the game we love in some form, for which we should be grateful to David Mason and the MWFA administration.

Our Manly United teams represented the region proudly again this season.

A special thank you to our coaching staff. It has been a pleasure working with them all and we are lucky to have them leading our most talented footballers. We have a significant role to play in developing these young men as players and as people and I believe we are doing a fantastic job of that.

Joe Fox our Head of SAP & Development Squad has done a fantastic job in leading these programs this season and we look forward to seeing them progress next season under his guidance.

Sam Gallagher our Head of Youth League has been a fantastic addition to the club. His organization, commitment and knowledge is going to be a great benefit to our youth league players next season.

In a season that started in mid-November 2019 and finished October 17th 2020, the players showed determination and professionalism to finish the season strongly and represent the club proudly.

In our senior space, 1st Team Head Coach Paul Dee stepped down from his role after five seasons in charge, with Adam Griffiths taking over the lead role. The players showed just how much Paul means to this club, beating Sydney Olympic 3-2 in a thrilling match for Paul Dee’s final match in charge.

With Adam Griffiths stepping into the Head Coach role for the remainder of the season, the team has started to show some glimpses of things to look forward to next year.

We have had five players from Manly United’s youth teams make their debut’s for the 1st team this year. Jordan Devries, Ronan Connolly, Jordan Segreto, Lachlan McGrath, and Matt O’Donoghue have all spent a significant amount of years at the club and we are excited to see them continue their development and progress with us.

Thanks,

Andrew Christiansen Manly United Technical Director

Judiciary Report

This is the first year that MWFA moved to a board structure which changed the responsibility from a Judiciary system to a Disciplinary Committee.

Disciplinary Committee from 2020 will now responsible for; Judiciary Protest & Disputes General Purpose Tribunal

As has been the case for previous seasons the abuse of match officials is still at a level that is not acceptable, this needs to be addressed at judiciary each week.

There have been lengthy suspensions handed down this season with two junior teams and one senior team being removed from the competition, the message does not appear to be getting through to the players and team officials.

This season we have more junior players receiving cautions and send-offs for a variety of offences. We continue to publish suspensions each week on the web site, hoping this would make players, spectators and coaches aware of the seriousness of being sent off.

Thank you to the panel that give up their time every Wednesday night.

David Wilson – Chairman Cas Greco Tony Cavalieri Angie Carey Mark Gale Richard Wright Craig McBurnie – MWFRA Representative Alternate Members Ross Brown Bruno Cara

We also had a member from each MWFA club sit on the panel on a weekly basis to assist clubs and players to get a better understanding of how the Disciplinary Committee works. This was beneficial to all and will continue next season.

Item 8 Presentation of Meritorious Service Awards

8.1 Jenny Roberts Jenny is a quiet achiever and works behind the scenes running the Clubs administration. She has carried out many roles in our club such as registrar, results officer, merchandise manager, secretary to mention a few.

She has also been instrumental in setting up and organising of our JDT program and has run, for many years, the evening BBQ at the JDT. This program is one of our most successful to date and in no small part this is due to Jenny’s hard work.

She is involved with our functions, events and charity fundraisers and assists our events co-ordinator with all of these events.

Jenny has prepared and minuted all the Clubs meetings and prepared all the AGM’s agendas and minutes.

Jenny actions and distributes every email to all the relevant parties within the Club.

93 | Page

The MWFA and its 17 clubs presented Jenny with a Meritorious Service Award.

8.2 Vince Roperti Vince’s association with Curly started when his twins joined U6 in 2011 and at the same time he joined AL7 as a player and team manager.

94 | Page

Vince joined the MWFA Defib working group when it was formed, helping drive participation in the defib gala day and the purchase of defibrillators.

Always the first to put his hand up when help is needed, both on the administrative side when committee members are away and down at Abbott Rd most weekends, Vince can be found putting up and taking down nets, cleaning up pitch-side, coaching his son and daughter’s teams or just cheering on Curly teams.

Vince has an enthusiasm for and commitment to soccer at all levels and is an asset to our club.

The MWFA and its 17 clubs presented Vince with a Meritorious Service Award.

8.3 Vince Condomitti Vince has been in the club in some sort of capacity since day 1 in 1962. He was on the original committee (and is still on committee) and was also a player and team manager in those early formative years. He also assisted in the purchase of gear for his team.

Upon the change of name of club to Brookvale FC in 1972, Vince continued on the committee with his eventual election as club president in 1999. A position he held until 2009, an 11-year reign.

In those 11 years Vince assisted in the gradual increase in player registrations and teams which now sees the club having 989 registered players and 73 teams.

Vince assisted in the packing of gear and announcing of teams at our annual pre-season junior orientation day, and he has now three grandchildren playing in our junior ranks.

Vince was also team manager for our Div 1 teams prior to reaching premier league status in 1981 for many years.

95 | Page

More recently Vince has assisted the club greatly by raising funds for the entire club to purchase new playing shirts, for some 900 people.

Vince and his wife Mary are well known within the club for running social functions like their famous pasta nights to show their appreciation of players running out every weekend to play for Brookvale FC.

Vince continues to be on the committee, using his business contacts to secure sponsorship to raise funds for gear.

The MWFA and its 17 clubs presented Vince with a Meritorious Service Award.

8.4 Wesley Ryder Wesley has been involved in football on the northern beaches since 1976 in some capacity, that is some 33 years.

Wes started play in 1976, as a 13 year old where he played for the old Manly Soccer Club for 2 seasons then moved on to Manly Vale Soccer Club where he stayed until 1993 before moving to Brookvale where he has been for the last 25 years.

Was has had many varied positions and a brief history is as follows:

He played for club for many years with the highlight being involved in the goal that won Brookvale the all age Champion of Champions in 1995.

He has held countless coaching and managing positions for the club. In 2019 he was Manager of our successful O/45 div 1 mens’ team and he was coach when Brookvale won the O/35s mens champion of champions in 2010.

He has held various committee positions including a stint as a Club Secretary for 2 years whilst John Mesite recharged his batteries. Currently Wes is a club VP and Director of Coaching.

96 | Page

Wes can be found most Saturday mornings at Grahams Reserve assisting in whatever capacity is required, especially when the U/6s are at Grahams.

Wes’s real passion is coaching, especially coaching of coaches and has achieved the following:

*Implemented the current club grading policy and improving it every season. *Organised the current club grading committee, which meets regularly for planning and updates. *Recently gained his C coaching licence and is encouraging other Brookvale coaches to do the same. *Can be seen any Saturday or Sunday morning attending youth games to assist coaches with talent identification. *Wes fully realises that Brookvale are weak in numbers and strength in the vital age groups for U/14 and U/15 boys and works on the theory if we have good coaches the rest will work out. If this can be achieved, Brookvale will have a great pathway for our players to make it all the way to premier league - men and women.

The MWFA and its 17 clubs presented Wesley with a Meritorious Service Award.

8.5 Helen Chambers Helen first became involved as a volunteer in Beacon Hill FC Football in 2007 when she first stepped up & managed her son’s U6 team, and Helen has continued to manage various teams for most of the past years up to & including this year.

In 2008, Helen stepped up for the role of U7 Coordinator to start off her first official Committee role & then continued with the U8s in 2009.

In 2010 through to 2013, Helen then fulfilled the duties of assistant Junior Coordinator.

97 | Page

In 2014 Helen managed the role of Youth Coordinator and continued to fulfil this role over the following 3 years.

In 2015 Helen as well as Youth Coordinator she added the role of assistant registrar for the Youth section & continued to do so for the following 3 years.

In 2017 Helen took on the Amateur League Coordinators position whilst still continuing with the Youth Registrars role.

In 2018 Helen had the role of Head Registrar whilst still handling the Amateur League Coordinators position and continued with the Head Registrars role for 2019.

For the past 12 years Helen has attended most Committee meetings, been instrumental in setting up presentation days during her years of looking after the Youth.

Helen has also been heavily involved with the Youth Grading for the past 9 years.

Beacon Hill FC Football feel Helen has been a great ambassador for our club and feel Helen is worthy of this award.

The MWFA and its 17 clubs presented Helen with a Meritorious Service Award.

Item 9 Nomination of Life Member John Mesite – MWFA Ltd Life Member

Keith Pester proposed John Mesite as a Life Member candidate for the 2019 AGM. This was seconded by Linda Ward.

John has been, and still is a major part of Brookvale FC and has gone above and beyond with our game over the last 56 years.

John was born in 1951 and attended Christian Brothers College (CBC), John played football with the school from 1963 to 1965 alongside long time friend David Anglicas. From 1969 to 1972 John

98 | Page

was heavily involved with CBC as a coach, manager & committee member and in 1981 & 1982 John was a Manager of Grade (representative) Teams at Manly Warringah Soccer Association.

Over the years John along with his brothers Vince & Mario were foundation members of the Manly Warringah Representative Club helping lay concrete and install fencing at LM Graham Reserve, the home of the first Rep Football on the Northern Beaches, working hand in hand with the late George Dick, and later on with Charles Valentine when representative football moved to Inman Reserve, Cromer and ultimately Cromer Park.

The Members were asked to vote on the nomination and the vote was unanimously in favour of John Mesite becoming a Life Member of the MWFA Vote: 18 for 0 against CARRIED

Costs that had been incurred included not passing on FFA Levy increase for 2019; financing the upgrade of the MWFA office phone and internet; investing in a Player Welfare program for Clubs and anti-bullying programs; a donation for Richard Tombs; legal fees for the transition to a company structure; and an increase in investment for club coaches to obtain a C Licence through the CCC Program. This totalled approximately $170k, and resulted in a decrease in profitability to $14,175.

Revenue had increased to $2.89m, which had increased from 2018 by approximately $50k.

The objective by the committee was to invest some of the accumulated profits to assist clubs.

Total assets were $2.5m, and liabilities had reduced to $535k from 2018.

At the end of the year there was a retained surplus of $1.975m.

The Association is performing very well and is the largest Association in Australia – something that all clubs should be very proud.

The new company was incorporated with effect from 1st October 2019. As was communicated through the Members over the last 18 months, it was deemed appropriate to withhold using ‘Company Limited by Guarantee’ until after the end of the Financial year (September 30), although ASIC officially recognised MWFA Ltd as a Company on 9 September. The company is now Limited by Guarantee. This will provide help to those who hold senior roles as they will be now protected by reason of the way the company is protected by guarantee, and it will assist in the event of any future disasters.

John Watson signed off on a clean auditor’s report for MWFA.
