But a decade and $13m later, Axl Rose still has to deliver IN THE HALCYON days before international terrorism cast an influence over contemporary songwriting and long before file sharing ransacked the music industry, I interviewed Matt Sorum in Los Angeles. Sorum, a drummer who had recently left Guns N’Roses, then the most successful rock group in the world, was, at the time, nursing his bruises. As we chatted, Sorum did his best to explain why he had fallen out with Guns N’Roses’s enigmatic and volatile lead singer Axl Rose, a frontman with a reputation every bit as controversial as that of Mick Jagger or Jim Morrison. Rose, now five years into the recording of a new Guns N’Roses album, their first release since 1993’s The Spaghetti Incident, had become a near recluse at his Malibu mansion. Guns N’Roses had fallen into disarray. While Rose held on to the bandname and had started work on a new album, called Chinese Democracy, Sorum had left in 1997 alongside the rhythm guitarist Gilby Clarke and bassist Duff McKagen. The lead guitarist, Slash, had quit in 1996. It has now been a decade since Guns N’Roses first started recording sessions for the elusive Chinese Democracy — Axl Rose refuses to conclude his efforts with a release. We have had an extremely eventful three months, from arrival in mid-November to the opening ceremony at the beginning of February! Our veterinarian, Dr Claire Petros, arrived in the Maldives in November, becoming the first and only sea turtle veterinarian in the country! As part of Claire’s training she was introduced to the local school in Hithadhoo, where thirty or so children were eager to learn about what was happening on their neighbouring island. This partnership is one that will greatly benefit the community of Hithadhoo, as we will set up a close relationship with the school, which will include regular presentations and teaching opportunities. We will also have school trips to the centre, so the children can meet the patients, and learn a little more about how they are treated with veterinary medicine. By December, Claire had designed the layout of the Claire’s first workshop with the children of Hithadhoo. The start of operation room and ordered the larger equipment, such a long and successful partnership.

The same teacher later performed around the globe with shock-rocker Marilyn Manson. If you saw future-R&B group Gnarls Barkley's concerts promoting their smash 2006 single "Crazy" and debut album "St. Elsewhere," he was behind the drum-kit then too. At one point, he was hunkered down with Axl Rose, trying to come up with music for Guns N' Roses' infamous, decade-plus gestating "Chinese Democracy" album. Chris Vrenna has done all those things during his music career. And more. Currently, in addition to intro to mass com, Vrenna is teaching intro to recording technology, studio production and Pro Tools at Calhoun, a school with an enrollment of around 10,000 and located in Decatur, a north Alabama city best known for being home to Point Mallard water-park and rocket manufacturer United Launch Alliance. Although the Providence-born businessman sold most of his family’s third-generational car dealerships a few years ago, we can still quickly recall their radio commercials — and for good reasons. They proliferated local airwaves for quite a while, and they were catchy AF. Nowadays, Boch Jr. serves as the president, CEO, and spokesman for Boch Enterprises, a $1 billion operation. He’s also the CEO of Subaru New England, and in 2006, he started Music Drives Us (MDU), a registered 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization. Music Drives Us supports music and arts education throughout New England. He seeded MDU in 2004 with $2 million. Boch Jr., who’s a graduate and former board member of the Berklee College of Music (in Boston), says, “I have always liked music since when I was a kid. When Woodstock hit, I was 10 years old, it changed my life.” In the ’80s, he met Brad Whitford and the rest of the members of Aerosmith. Since then, Boch Jr.’s forged strong bonds with many more musical artists.
