SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS April 8, 2010 Originally published April 7, 2010 at 10:13 PM | Page modified April 7, 2010 at 11:51 PM Mariners bullpen falters in 6-5 loss to Oakland Oakland's Kurt Suzuki drilled a deep fly ball past the glove of Milton Bradley at the left-field wall in the ninth inning, handing reliever Mark Lowe and the Mariners a 6-5 walkoff loss. By Geoff Baker Seattle Times staff reporter OAKLAND, Calif. - The realities of a six-man bullpen began hitting the Mariners about as hard as their opponent was by the time the fifth inning rolled around. It was clear by then that Seattle starter Ryan Rowland-Smith would have to scratch and claw just to make it through the minimum five innings his team desperately needed Wednesday night. After that, it was Russian roulette time, as the Mariners played a guessing game with their limited relief corps, squeezing every last pitch they could out of some arms. But they couldn't get the job completely done as Kurt Suzuki drilled a deep fly ball past the glove of Milton Bradley at the left-field wall in the ninth inning, handing reliever Mark Lowe and the Mariners a 6-5 walkoff loss. After the game, manager Don Wakamatsu suggested the team would have to call up another bullpen arm if a similar long-relief scenario occurs in Thursday's series finale. "We can't keep going like this," Wakamatsu said. The second walkoff defeat in two nights for the Mariners, in front of 18,194 at the Coliseum, has them crossing their fingers that starters Doug Fister and Jason Vargas don't implode these next two days.

Information gained is delivered impersonally to clubhouses. But what if there was someone who was not only highly skilled at poring over analytical information, but was also a former big league player? That's what the Reds believe they have in former reliever Caleb Cotham, who was named their assistant pitching coach on Jan. 2. "I think he's going to bring a great deal to not only our pitching staff but personally to me as well," Reds pitching coach Derek Johnson said. "He's got a really good handle on some of the analytical information that's out there." Cotham, 31, did not have a distinguished Major League career, with a 7.15 ERA over 35 appearances in two seasons.

This Week In Baseball Debuts: The May Edition Welcome to the the second issue of the This Week In Baseball Debuts newsletter. Inspired by an episode of Effectively Wild, the purpose of this newsletter is to highlight the MLB debuts that have occurred in the past week. Our goal is to not only inform you about the top prospects you already know but give you some insight into some of the lesser know players who may only be up for a single cup of coffee. This is the second in our two mega newsletters highlighting all debuts that occurred in April and May. After this week it will just be a weekly update that will be sent to your inbox every Sunday. In addition to this newsletter, a version of these profiles will also appear at Banished To The Pen. Mike Soroka, SP Born: August 4th, 1997 (20) Team: Atlanta Braves Debut: May 1, 2018 Throws: Right Bats: Right Soroka made a splash in his major league debut, throwing six solid innings, striking out five, and walking no one. Listed by FanGraphs as the #34 prospect on its Top 100, the 20-year-old righty gets a 55 future grade, with low variance. Kiley McDaniel lists the Canada native and former first-round draft pick as the Braves’ 4th best prospect, with an above-average fastball and slider right now, and the potential to develop an above- average change and above-average command. Over his four-year minor league career, Soroka has shown a propensity to keep his walks down, and keep runs from scoring.
