Morphological changes in the cephalothorax, in the adult stage, may be related to the increase in size of the gonads during sexual maturation and to the development of gills during the transition from arthrobranch (juvenile) to dendrobranch (adult). The rostral spine, in the adult stage, tends to become more elongated and more sharply angled. This feature may be related to predation pressure on larger specimens (adults), knowing that throughout its ontogeny the rostral spine of this species assumes phenotypic traits that make swallowing more difficult for predators. This species is mostly caught by seabob trawlers, sometimes with large quantities of bycatch. The goal of this paper is to promote the long-term sustainability of marine stocks impacted by this fishery, by analysing 1) shrimp stock status, 2) the current state of knowledge regarding bycatch impacts, and 3) spatial fishing patterns of seabob trawlers. To address the first, the paper discusses a stock assessment on Guyana`s seabob stock using the Stochastic Surplus Production Model in Continuous-Time (SPiCT). The model output suggests that the stock is currently in an overfished state, i.e., that the predicted Absolute Stock Biomass (Bt) for 2018 is four times smaller than the Biomass which yields Maximum Sustainable Yield at equilibrium (BMSY) and the current fishing mortality (Ft) is six times above the required to achieve Fishing Mortality which results in Maximum Sustainable Yield at equilibrium (FMSY). These results indicate a more overfished state than was generated by the previous stock assessment which concluded that the stock was fully exploited but not overfished (Medley, 2013).To address the second goal, the study linked catch and effort data with spatial Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data to analyse the mixture of target and non-target species within the seabob fishery.

Seven shrimp species ( Aristaeomorpha foliacea , Aristeus antenna - tus , Parapenaeus longirostris , Plesionika edwardsii , Plesionika martia , Pasiphae sivado and Pontocaris lacazei ) were collected as a result of ten trawl operations with a commercial bottom trawl. The most abundant species were P. longirostris (52.06%), A. foliacea (35.64%) and P. edwardsii (9.50%), represent - ing 97.20% of all captured shrimps. The catch per unit eort (CPUE) ranged from 3.094 kg/h to 9.251 kg/h, with an average value of 5.44 ± 2.01 kg/h for shrimps. A total of 37 sh species (28 teleosts and nine elasmobranchs) were captured. The prevailing sh species in catches were Chlorophthalmus agassizi , Merluccius merluccius and Etmopterus spinax in terms of biomass and Helicolenus dactylopterus , Hoplo - stethus mediterraneus , Trachurus trachurus and Lepidopus caudatus in terms of abundance.

Abstract The complete list of Canarian marine decapods (last update by González & Quiles 2003, popular book) currently com- prises 374 species/subspecies, grouped in 198 genera and 82 families; whereas the Cape Verdean marine decapods (now fully listed for the first time) are represented by 343 species/subspecies with 201 genera and 80 families. Due to changing environmental conditions, in the last decades many subtropical/tropical taxa have reached the coasts of the Canary Islands. Comparing the carcinofaunal composition and their biogeographic components between the Canary and Cape Verde ar- chipelagos would aid in: validating the appropriateness in separating both archipelagos into different ecoregions (Spalding et al. 2007), and understanding faunal movements between areas of benthic habitat. The consistency of both ecoregions is here compared and validated by assembling their decapod crustacean checklists, analysing their taxa composition, gath- ering their bathymetric data, and comparing their biogeographic patterns. Four main evidences (i.e. different taxa; diver- gent taxa composition; different composition of biogeographic patterns; different endemicity rates) support that separation, especially in coastal benthic decapods; and these parametres combined would be used as a valuable tool at comparing biotas from oceanic archipelagos.

Our findings update the knowledge of the biodiversity of this area and of the depth records of several species. The presence of coral mounds mostly in the north-eastern sector of the SML coral province seems to influence the large scale distribution of the deep-sea ben- thopelagic fauna, playing the role of attraction-refuge with respect to the barren muddy bottoms where fishing occurs in northern areas. Multiple Correspondence Analysis identified 3 main taxa groups: (1) rather strictly linked to the bottom, resting or moving on the seabed, often sheltering and feeding; (2) mostly swimming in the water column and mostly observed on rugged bottoms; and (3) actively swimming or hovering near the seabed. The behavioural patterns largely related to activity and position of the fauna seem to determine their small-scale distribution. The effects of different benthic macrohabitats appear to be less important and the depth within the bathymetric range examined even less so.

Local fishers complain that shrimp and lobster trawling fishing is the main factor responsible for low stock abundance, but they still persist in these activities as these two species command the highest market prices. So they feel that the target species are already over-fished. We suggest that proper management action, alternative ways of income generation and the payment of job insurance would help to mitigate the problem. Six different substrate combinations were tested using silt and clay, various granulometries of sand, and gravel. Experimental tank for preference testing consisted of a 50 cm diameter cylindrical tank with 6 lateral compartments and a radial area in the middle. Every substrate combination prepared was randomly chosen for each compartment. Each substrate was spread to have a 5 cm thickness in the compartments. One isolated individual for each trial (n= 40) was used. Activities of the animals were observed 8 times a day, at 13:30, 14:30, 17:30, 18:30, 0:30, 1:30, 7:30 and 8:30 h. X. kyoyeri had a significant preference for very fine and fine sand.

Compared to the animals kept at controlled pH, exposure to reduced pH resulted in the loss of osmoregulatory capacity in C. danae at all salinities, except for some hyporegulation at 40‰, and reduced oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion at 20 and 40‰. Xiphopenaeus kroyeri remained an osmoconformer in all evaluated conditions, except for some hyporegulation at 40‰, and when exposed to the reduced pH, it presented changes in oxygen consumption at all salinities and reductions in ammonia excretion at 20 and 35‰ compared to the control animals. Both species use protein as the main energy substrate and decrease the hepatosomatic index when exposed to reduced pH relative to the control. The observed changes may be associated with changes in the activity of enzymes related to osmoregulation, the use of amino acids as osmotic effectors of cell volume control and recovery, and the Bohr effect, and, because the gills are multifunctional organs related to osmoregulation, the changes may be related to acid– base control, nitrogen excretion, and respiration, with a change in one of these functions bringing about changes in the others.
