We are at an exciting moment for the study of medieval art history and I am opti- Awards mistic about the direction of the field. During her term, Helen successfully launched the revision and orchestrated the confir- Events and Opportunities 31 mation of the ICMA Mission Statement, crafting one that recognizes how we foster the study Contributors 37 of art and architecture from “every corner of the medieval world.” In her commitment to expanding participation in the organization, moreover, Helen worked hard to encourage those beyond the ranks of our Board of Directors to become actively engaged in our eleven com- mittees, issuing open calls for volunteers each year in January. It is wonderful that so many colleagues have responded actively to lend their smarts and talents to our cause. I tip my hat to Helen for handing-off such a strong and dynamic ICMA. I also recognize the hard work of Anne Stanton, who served as Secretary for the ICMA, masterfully transforming the lively, sometimes free-wheeling debates and discussions of Board meetings and other colloquies into beautiful minutes recording our deliberations. I thank Heidi Gearhart for an industrious three years as Editor of ICMA News, developing this publication into an essential resource rich with reports, reviews and notices of events pertinent to our community. Three committee Chairs also are stepping down: Laura Hollengreen, of the Nominating Committee; Alexa Sand, of Publications; and Beth Williamson, of Programs and Lectures. All three did first-rate work advancing our traditions of showcasing rigorous and innovative scholarship, managing their committees, and collaborating in the interests of the organization. I am grateful to these women for modeling leadership for us all. I also recognize the Board members rotating off after their Continued on page 2 Melanie Hanan, Editor terms: Elizabeth Bolman, Tom Dale, Christopher Lakey, Amanda Luyster, Christina Maranci, Alison Perchuk and Sarah Thompson. Thanks to all of them for their service. And I have the pleasure of welcoming a new cluster of colleagues to the team, voted in by the membership in an election with an impressive 46% participation rate. (The voter turn-out for most scholarly organizations hovers around 20%.) Joining Warren Woodfin(Treasurer) and myself on the ICMA Executive Committee are Stephen Perkinson, who will serve a three-year term as Vice President of the ICMA, and Richard Leson, who will take up the quill as Secretary. New members of the Board of Directors are: Andrea Achi, Kirk Ambrose, Shirin Fozi, Heidi Gearhart, Tracy Chapman Hamilton, Joan Holladay and Bryan Keene. The committee assignments of these and others who have volunteered to help govern our organization are viewable in the “About” section of the ICMA website. Our new overseas Associates are Glaire Anderson (University of Edinburgh), Martina Bagnoli (Gallerie Estense, Modena), Ioanna Christoforaki (Academy of Athens) and Jitske Jasperse (Humboldt Universität, Berlin). Our new Chair of the Nominating Committee is Ellen Shortell and her committee members are: Eva Hoffman, Sonja Drimmer, Joseph Ackley and Elina Gertsman. I am also happy to introduce our new editor for ICMA News, Melanie Hanan; please contact Melanie with ideas for short essays, reports, or other announcements you would like included in the newsletter ([email protected]). The College Art Association meeting in February is the moment when our leadership rotates, and I was delighted that we convened events at the conference that represent so well where we are and where we are headed as a field. Meg Bernstein and Emogene Cataldo organized the ICMA-sponsored session at CAA, “Buildings in Bloom: Foliage and Architecture in the Global Middle Ages,” and Helen Evans, with the help of a presidential fund given by Marilyn Stokstad, put together a thought-provoking and ambitious panel at our Annual Meeting, “ICMA and Expanding the Medieval World.” Reports on both of these sessions are in the “Member News; Events” section below in the newsletter. We were also able to recognize the outstanding scholarship of our members, with Margaret Graves winning our annual book prize for Arts of Allusion: Object, Ornament, and Architecture in Medieval Islam (Oxford UP, 2018) and Christopher Lakey earning Finalist status for Sculptural Seeing: Relief, Optics, and the Rise of Perspective in Medieval Italy (Yale UP, 2018). Helen’s panel was held at the Arts Club of Chicago and, after the discussion, the event seamlessly transitioned to a lively reception where members long-standing and new socialized and brainstormed. I am also delighted to direct your attention to a revamped ICMA website (medievalart.org). I am deeply grateful to Greg Bryda, Chair of Digital Resources, and his committee for the boldness and professionalism they brought to this important undertaking. In closing, I wish to underscore that we aim to make the organization responsive to your needs. Curtis It's revolutionary for women to sing the blues, but it's even more so to sing all the songs of life. —Gloria Steinem, Revolution from Within The widespread impact of feminism is undeniable, with a diverse array of fields enriched by its contributions. Feminist therapy represents one of the most significant of these contributions in the area of women's wellness. Developing in response to the second wave of feminism and feminist critique of traditional therapy, feminist therapy has now established a rich tradition of theory, practice, and research (Bricker-Jenkins, Hooyman, & Gottlieb, 1991; Brown & Root, 1990; Burstow, 1992; Worell & Remer, 2003). This tradition has influenced those working in such fields as psychotherapy, counseling, and social work— whether in choosing to practice feminist therapy directly or to use it to inform their own practice. With its roots in the 1970's, feminist therapy is still greatly needed today: to address unique issues facing women; to provide a more complete understanding of women in the sociopolitical context of ongoing patriarchy and institutionalized oppression; to fill gaps in current theory and research; and to provide creative therapeutic approaches which better meet women's needs (Worell & Remer, 2003). At the same time as feminist therapy has been developing, music therapy has been developing its own rich tradition of theory, research, and practice.

Rock in the Kennebec River, Embden, Maine The following is a revised version of a slide presentation I gave at a NEARA meeting a number of years ago. I have accumulated so many fascinating pieces of reference that the whole subject should really be in two parts, so I will focus here on the dragon legends and in a future article will dwell more on the mythology of the other petroglyphs, such as thunderbirds. This whole subject began for me at least eight years ago when George Carter wrote in his column "Before Columbus" in the Ellsworth American that only Celtic dragons had arrows on their tails. The dragon petroglyph [Fig. 1] is on a large rock [Fig. 2] projecting into the Kennebec river in the town of Embden, which is close to Solon, in central Maine. It is just downstream from the rapids, and before the water level was raised by dams, would have been a logical place to put in after a portage. The "dragon" is one of over a hundred petroglyphs which includes many diverse subjects - there are quite a few canoes, animals of various kinds, human and ‘thunderbird’ figures. They were obviously done over a long period of time since there are many layers and the early ones are fainter. They are all pecked or ‘dinted’ which is the term used by archaeologists. The styles and technique seem to be related to the petroglyphs at Peterborough, Ontario, which in turn appear to be similar to those in Bohuslan, Sweden.

Sometimes, African Americans are not happy: like our Jewish brothers and sisters, we nod ironically when misunderstood, misused, and maligned; and, like them, we take up bittersweet, sometimes self-deprecating, humor to “change the joke and slip the yoke.”2 Of course sometimes we are happy; although we are not like our Anglo-Saxon cousins, who often pay out their pleasure either in ponderous measure or jaded excess; at home we enthuse, spill over, laugh at our predicament as well as ourselves, but often, when visiting, we carry ourselves with gingered ease.

    A Family Business: Chile and the Transition to Democracy in Alberto Fuguet’s Se arrienda Ezekiel Trautenberg University of California, Los Angeles Se arrienda depicts a landmark era in Chile’s cultural, economic, political, and social history: the Transition to Democracy (1988- 2005). This period begins with the “No” campaign’s victory in the October 5, 1988 plebiscite and ends with the implementation of a series of wide-ranging constitutional reforms in August 2005. Fuguet’s film, which follows the composer Gastón Fernández, unfolds at the beginning and tail end of the Transition to Democracy. Se arrienda represents Chile during the Transition through the lenses of cul- ture and economics. The film’s dual temporal narrative structure bookending the Transition, polysemous title, and epigraph from L.P. Hartley’s novel The Go-Between (1953) establish its allegorical qualities. Additionally, three facets epitomize Se arrienda’s allegorical representation of Transition-era Chile: the October 14, 1988 Human Rights Now! concert in Mendoza, the relationship between Gastón and his father, and the portrayal of Chernovsky. The film’s depiction of the Human Rights Now! concert, held days after the 1988 plebi- scite, reflects the collective optimism and solidarity at the beginning of the Transition, as well as the prominence of human rights as a political, social, and cultural issue. Turning to the film’s present of 2003, the relationship between Gastón and his father functions as a metaphor of “family capitalism” (Schneider, Hierarchical Capitalism 47), while Chernovsky’s descent into poverty and isolation reflects the entrenched socio-economic inequality and limited social safety net in Transition-era Chile.

    A Janus-faced Sea: Contrasting Perceptions and Experiences of the Mediterranean Henk Driessen Institute for Cultural and Social Anthropology, Mediterranean Studies, University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands [email protected] Abstract This article makes a plea for more systematic attention in maritime anthropology to the under researched topic of how people perceive and relate to the sea. More specifically, it deals with different perceptions and experiences of the Mediterranean. At its core is an account told by a clandestine Moroccan immigrant about his experience of crossing the Strait of Gibraltar. The agonistic image of the sea arising from this contemporary narrative is discussed against the historical back- ground of changing attitudes towards the sea and contrasted to the tourist image of a benevolent Mediterranean that has become so pervasive over the past fifty years. A sailor drowned in the sea’s depths. Unaware, his mother goes and lights a tall candle before the ikon of our Lady, praying that he’ll come back quickly, that the weather may be good – her ear cocked always to the wind. While she prays and supplicates, the ikon listens, solemn, sad, knowing the son she waits for never will come back. (C.P. Cavafy, ‘Prayer’) Introduction Over the past fifteen years there has been a shift in maritime anthropology from general ethnographic themes to policy-oriented topics such as over fishing, man- agement systems, legal pluralism, coping strategies and sustainability of marine resources (van Ginkel 2003). This trend reinforces the one-sided focus in maritime studies on the instrumental aspects of the relationships people, almost exclusively fishermen, maintain with the sea.
