LYNCH Derrick Raidio Corca Baiscinn Programme Coordinator/Sports Producer Ireland Raidió Corca Baiscinn is a not-for-profit community radio station broadcasting to South West Clare on 92.5 and 94.8 FM. We broadcast from 2pm to 9pm each weekday and 2pm to 5pm on weekends. We give a voice to the local community of South West Clare with 90% of our output generated by volunteers from the local area. Regular training courses provide local people with the skills necessary to take their issues and ideas to the airwaves and keep our listeners in the loop on local issues and activities. We broadcast to a franchise area of 13,000 people with a transmission that reaches from the tip of Loop Head to Doonbeg, Kilmihil, Labasheeda and the urban area of Kilrush. Anyone can get involved by emailing, phoning or dropping in to see us in the Community Centre in Kilkee. All of our training is provided free of charge to people of all ages and backgrounds. No previous radio experience is necessary, all we ask is that you are interested in getting involved. Raidió Corca Baiscinn seeks to engage with disadvantaged and socially excluded groups such as lone parents, young people, the unemployed, the elderly and disabled people. The station has lengthy and beneficial relationships with the likes of the Brothers Of Charity, the West Clare Community Services Programme, and Enable Ireland to name but a few, and is always looking to work with more community and voluntary groups in South West Clare in developing and delivering radio programming. I am a 25 year old MA in Journalism graduate currently working in community radio in west Clare. I am the programme coordinator with the radio station and also produce a weekly sports show. I am heavily involved in sports at a community level and I am currently the PRO and secretary for my local GAA club. Ennis Cathedral: The Building & Its People. Saturday 29th. August 2009 Presented by the Clare Roots Society Clare Roots Society The Clare Roots Society, brainchild of Ennisman Larry Brennan, was formed in April 2006 as an amateur family history group. The Society meets once a month in Ennis, and has approx. 50 members. Anyone with an interest in tracing their family tree is welcome to join. Some members are experienced genealogists while others are novices in the field. In addition to local members, we have some 'virtual' members who live overseas, but who follow our activities via email, and dream that they are in Clare. Activities are advertised in local press and in the Ennis Cathedral church bulletin. Under the Chairmanship of Declan Barron and his committee of Fiona de Buitleir, Eric Shaw, Larry Brennan & Paddy Waldron, guest speakers were arranged at past meetings including Paul O’Donnell of the South Galway genealogy group, Peter Beirne of 'The Manse' Local Studies library in Ennis, Jim Herlihy on the RIC, Liam Curran on Irish Soldiers in the British Army, Jonny Dillon of the Folklore Dept., UCD, and Dr. Pat Nugent of the University of Liverpool amongst others. From our own members, speakers have included Dr. Paddy Waldron, Gerry Kennedy, Ger Madden, Declan Barron, Eric Shaw, Robert Cullen, and Larry Brennan. In addition, we have run a number of hands-on computer workshops on genealogical research and the recording of data. The society works in partnership with Clare County Library in order to add to the wonderful fund of genealogy information already available on their website www.clarelibrary.ie Our biggest project to date, completed in 2008 with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Council of Ireland, involved transcription of the gravestones in the old Drumcliffe Cemetery.

Clare from Atlas and cyclopedia of Ireland. The general history (1905) NAME. The county is named from the little town of Clare, near the mouth of the Fergus : and this got its name from a bridge of planks by which the Fergus was crossed in old times : the Gaelic word clar signifying a board or plank. SIZE AND POPULATION. This county has water all round (namely, the Atlantic, the Shannon, and Lough Derg) except for 40 miles of its north and northeastern margin, where it is bounded by Galway. Greatest length from Loop Head to the boundary near Lough Atorick on the northeastern border, 67 miles ; breadth from Limerick to Black Head (nearly, but not quite, at right angles to the length), 42 miles ; breadth from Black Head to the shore west of Bunratty (at right angles to the length), 35 miles ; area, 1,294 square miles ; population, 141,457. SURFACE. It may be stated in a general way that the northern part and the eastern margin are mountainous or hilly ; and the middle and south form a broad plain, occasionally broken up by low hills, and in one place by a considerable mountain (Slievecallan). The barony of Burren in the north is an extraordinary region of limestone rock, rising into hills of bare gray limestone, the intervening valleys or flats being also composed of limestone, with great blocks strewn over the surface, both hills and valleys being relieved here and there by lovely grassy patches of pure green. MOUNTAINS AND HILLS. The highest summit of the Burren district is Slieve Elva (1,109), a conspicuous flat-topped mountain ; Cappanawalla 1,028) rises direct over Ballyvaghan Bay ; and in the east of the same district is Slievecarran (1,075).

MacLysaght writes: “Quilligan, Ó Cuileagáin - This Thomond [regional] name is equally well known in its variant form, Culligan” [McLysaght, A Guide to Irish Surnames, 1994]. In Edward MacLysaght’s Supplement to Irish Families, 1994, he wrote: “Culligan, Quilligan – Both these variants of Ó Cuileagáin are Clare names and are mainly found in that county and.. Limerick city … A century ago Culligan was much more numerous that Quilligan but the numbers are now about equal. Woulfe regards the name as an attenuated form of O’Colgan (which is said, without evidence, to be more correctly MacColgan). This implies that the sept immigrated westwards from Offaly which is to some extent corroborated by a fiant of 1588 where one of that name living in King’s County obtained a pardon. An earlier fiant shows another O’Colligan among the many O’Connors whose location is not mentioned. They were, however, well established in West Clare in the 17th century .. as Cullegane is returned in Petty’s Census as a principal name in the barony of Clonderalaw, Ennis”. This, the author’s Colgan Chronology does not include the surname Quilligan within its ambit.

Labasheeda and the Great War By Ger Browne The Great War Memorial in Ennis The new Clare Great War Memorial in Ennis, with the names of nearly 700 Clare men and women who died in WW1. It is hoped to add to this soon, and include the Clare war dead from WW2. Four men from Labasheeda who died in WW1, feature on the Great War Memorial in Ennis. They were: Edward and John Lucitt and Michael O’Neill and Thomas O’Shea. 1 The Men from Labasheeda who fought in the Great War. Bombardier Frank Buffham: Labasheeda. He was a Shoemaker aged 18 when he enlisted in Oct 1908 into the Royal Garrison Artillery 29868. He served in Gibraltar form 1909 to 1914, and with the Med Expeditionary Force from July 1915 to May 1916. He was discharged in Jan 1917 due to a gun shot wound (Jan 1916) that led to his right leg being amputated below the knee. His mother was Annie Buffham Burton St Kilrush, and his brother George in the Royal Navy. (British Army WW1 Pension Records fold3.com) Private Sinon Edward Callanan: Born in Labasheeda Co Clare on the 26th Nov 1896. He was aged 21 and living in New Jersey when he enlisted on the 4th Sept 1918 into Co E Engineer Training Regiment, Camp Humphreys VA 2611970. He did not serve overseas and was discharged in Jan 1919.(New York, Abstracts of World War I Military Service, 1917-1919) Captain Tom Corry DCM MID: Labasheeda, 1st Bn Irish Guards 2384. He was Mentioned in Despatches twice and awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in June 1915, for ‘gallantry and courage under fire’.
