OXNARD, Calif. (Aug. 11, 2016) — Workrite Uniform Company announces its updated lines of flame- resistant (FR) clothing developed by women, specifically for women in industrial and fire service professions. Manufactured under the company’s Workrite® FR and Workrite® FR Fire Service brands, these women’s collections offer enhanced comfort and improved fit for the wearer.

Available for purchase from industrial distributors and qualified resellers, the updated Workrite FR and Workrite FR Fire Service women’s lines now include with vertical darts in the front and contoured seams in the back. Additionally, the women’s lines offer pants featuring a lower rise and more tailored fit in the , seat and thighs.

“Safety for wearers of all shapes and sizes is the priority of every garment we sew at Workrite Uniform," said Jessie Garcia, Workrite Uniform’s brand leader. “For decades, women in occupations traditionally held by men have faced limited options, but with increasing numbers of women building careers in fire service, oil and gas, electrical utilities, and other industrial professions, it’s an important time for innovation in women’s workwear. I’m proud to be expanding our commitment to provide quality FR protection, while meeting the unique needs of women in these industries."

With the potential for hazards like flash fire and arc flash in these industries, protective clothing that fits improperly can pose significant dangers to the wearer. Improperly fitting workwear may catch on equipment, impair movement, leave areas of skin exposed to hazards or increase the likelihood that the clothing will not be worn in compliance with safety standards. Workrite Uniform’s updated women’s lines are built to address these potential concerns with the backing of a 40-year history in quality FR manufacturing and a more customized, comfortable fit.

Workrite Uniform offers a variety of FR clothing options for both men and women. To learn more, visit www.workrite.com or call 800-521-1888.

Workrite Uniform Company, Inc., a flame-resistant (FR) workwear brand and affiliate of Williamson- Dickie Manufacturing Company ("Dickies"), is furthering its commitment to school safety. Putting plans into action, Workrite Uniform recently partnered with Serrano High School in Phelan, California, to outfit its 70-student welding class with FR coveralls.

"We are proud to work with education systems to help institutions, like Serrano High School, understand the proper precautions in keeping their students safe," said Workrite Uniform president Keith Suddaby. With school lab explosions, such as the one that took place in Denver on Sept. 15, Workrite Uniform has also recently expanded its line of FR lab and was the first manufacturer to offer a women-specific style.

Workrite Uniform asserts that the benefits of outfitting students and research labs with protective gear dramatically outweighs the costs should an accident occur, as these products reduce the severity of potential injuries, increase the likelihood of survival and lessen financial risk for the institution.

Business briefs - International Journal gains chief editor

Ventura County Star (California) October 9, 2016 Sunday 1, CountyStar Edition

Copyright 2016 Ventura County Star All Rights Reserved Section: BUSINESS; Pg. E4 Length: 1954 words

Body

CAMARILLO - Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has named CSU Channel Islands professor of political science Andrea Grove, Ph.D., as chief editor of the International Journal of Social Business.

The new journal is aimed at those who want to know more about the field of social businesses and how they can get involved and/or invest.

"Dr. Grove's understanding of both the social business concept and its potential power to address the threat posed by wealth concentration makes her an ideal editor for this new international publication," said Yunus, who developed the concept of a social business.

A social business is a self-sustaining business with a philanthropic cause. Profits from a social business may, for example, empower those in poverty to become entrepreneurs themselves, build a community center or bring clean water to a village.

"A charity dollar has only one life. A social business dollar can be invested over and over again," Yunus said.

Yunus, a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur with a doctorate in economics, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for founding the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh in the 1970s to help impoverished basket weavers. A Nobel Prize also was awarded to the bank.

Yunus pioneered the concepts of microcredit and microfinance loans, which can be much less than $100, but can mean everything for someone trying to create a small business to support themselves.

Grove, who helped launch CSU Channel Islands' Global Studies major in 2015, served as the director of the university's California Institute for Social Business, which was founded in 2010 by Yunus and the university's then-president, Richard R. Rush. It has been supported by two grants from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.

Grove co-authored a book with CSU Channel Islands Associate Vice President and Dean of Extended University Gary Berg, Ph.D. called, "Social Business: Theory, Practice and Critical Perspectives," which was published in 2014. Business briefs - International Journal gains chief editor

"I think the Journal of International Business is really an effort to publish some of the cutting-edge research in the field," Grove said. "It's a really new field, and it's interdisciplinary. It doesn't really fit in economics and not in business and not in sociology. It's a hybrid interdisciplinary field."

Grove has worked with Yunus for years, but she was surprised and honored when he selected her to edit the publication.

"Many problems of the world remain unresolved," Yunus said. "United Nations sustainable development goals need to be achieved within the given time frame. The world needs to revisit the ongoing capitalist practice of business and identify the content and role of business schools. Dr. Grove will help gather and curate articles and information to help us all better understand the new and promising concept of social business."

Employment lawyer joins local firm

CAMARILLO - Susan S. Waag has joined the Camarillo-based employment law firm LightGabler as a senior attorney.

The addition of Waag, an employment law attorney who works exclusively with Central Coast businesses and nonprofits to prevent and resolve personnel issues, marks an expansion of LightGabler's legal services in San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County.

Waag has been in practice for more than 25 years and has represented and provided employment legal advice to more than 450 companies. She regularly conducts employer in-house training and focuses on litigation avoidance and helping employers understand and comply with employment laws.

"I have based my unique legal career on the belief that all employers deserve access to quality legal advice on how to comply with our complex and confusing employment laws," she said. "I am excited to team up with LightGabler."

Waag is a cum laude graduate of UCLA, and received her law degree from USC, where she was a member of the Law Review. She consistently receives Martindale-Hubbell's AV Preeminent Rating for the highest level of professional excellence, the law firm said.

"We are thrilled that Susan is now part of the LightGabler team," said Jonathan Fraser Light, managing attorney at the firm. "Her dedication to her clients and vast expertise in employment law is unsurpassed in the San Luis Obispo region."

Waag has held board positions for the Human Resource Association of the Central Coast and the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce. She has also served as a board member of the San Luis Obispo County YMCA and San Luis Obispo Symphony.

Waag can be reached at 783-2300 or [email protected]

OXNARD - Quality Innovative Solutions Inc., doing business as QI-Solutions, has been selected for the 2016 Inner City 100, a list of the fastest-growing inner-city businesses in the U.S.

The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City and Fortune made the announcement about the Oxnard company, which ranked 83 on the list.

The top 100 in -- determined by revenue growth -- are honored on the Inner City 100 list published in Fortune.

The rankings for each company were announced at the Inner City 100 Conference and Awards Ceremony on Sept. 14 at the Aloft Hotel in Boston. Before the awards celebration, honorees gathered for a full-day business symposium featuring networking opportunities, management case studies from Harvard Business School professors and interactive sessions with top CEOs.

Keynote speakers at this year's event included Staples interim CEO Shira Goodman, chairman and CEO of Pinnacle Group and Inner City 100 alumnus Nina Vaca, and Harvard Business School professor and ICIC founder and Chairman Michael E. Porter. The recitals held since that time have raised more than $2.5 million for the New West Symphony and its many education programs. This recital honored what would have been Israel's 100th birthday.

Nearly 300 guests attended the recital at Samuelson Chapel on the California Lutheran University campus. The program featured performances by Christopher O'Riley from NPR's "From the Top," Van Cliburn Crystal award recipient Sean Chen, Broadway duo Diane Ketchie and Ray Saar, award-winning pianist Edward Francis, violinist Danielle Belen, and New West principal flute player Paul Fried. Perforating system generates consistent perforating entry holes

GEODynamics has added the FracIQ Limited Entry Perforating System to its "Plug and Perf" technology. The patent-pending system generates consistent perforating entry holes and penetration depths, regardless of gun position, well casing or formation type. This improves fracture planning by providing optimum pressure diversion, while constant rock penetration creates repeatable breakdown pressures. This ultimately results in improved fracture treatments, lower costs and more productive wells. The system is available in 0.30-in., 0.35-in. and 0.40in. hole sizes, as well as GEODynamics' IQ Gun System for precise shots placement. Photo: GEODynamics. www.perf.com

Resin-coated proppant improves the health and safety of workers

A new resin-coated proppant has been released by Hexion. True North proppants are produced in Canada, and are available in 20/40 and 30/50 mesh sizes. The resin system incorporates Hexion's Stress Bond technology, which bond in the fracture with closure stress, providing all the benefits of a curable resin-coated sand. Additionally, the proppants offer reduced dust generation during the pneumatic transfer and conveying process, compared to uncoated frac sand. Because the proppants reduce the amount of respirable silica to levels below the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Canadian limits, the health and safety of workers on location is improved. www.hexion.com/oilfield

Body

Flame-retardant (FR) clothing was once stiff, uncomfortable and extremely hot. Through technological advances, manufacturers have made the clothing so flexible and comfortable that linemen hardly know they're wearing FR garments.

At Jackson Electric Membership Corp. in Jefferson, Georgia, the company used to offer limited choices for its linemen. Today, the crews are wearing FR coats, vests, sweatshirts, jeans, slacks, T-shirts, button- down shirts, tyndales and Henleys out in the field.

Evolution of FR Clothing

FR clothing has come a long way since it was first introduced to the power industry. Over the years, the manufacturers have made the clothing softer and more lightweight, which is important in Georgia, where the linemen have to work in hot weather conditions.

Ten years ago, the Jackson EMC linemen all had to wear FR clothing, but there were no set requirements on sleeve length or thickness of the material. Due to recent changes in requirements, linemen now are required to wear long-sleeved FR shirts and either FR slacks or jeans when working in an energized zone.

When this change occurred, the company told the linemen how and why the standard was changed. They also gave them the pros and cons of changing the uniform and always make the linemen aware of any additional changes.

The majority of linemen prefer wearing the FR jeans, which allows them to be in uniform without feeling like they are wearing FR garments. While linemen must wear FR jeans or pants all the time, they only have to wear the long-sleeved shirts when someone on the crew is working on an energized line. As soon as that person is not working hot, then the linemen can remove their long-sleeved shirts, which they often wear over the top of company-issued short-sleeve FR shirts.

Garment Selection Fire-Proof Fashion

Every spring, the utility gives the linemen a set allotment, which they can use to purchase new FR clothing. For that reason, the linemen always try to update their FR with key pieces each year.

When it's time for linemen to order their FR workwear, they often visit the district office. They then work with an employee who is in charge of coordinating all of the uniforms for the field workforce. She tells the linemen what clothing they can and can't choose from, and she lets them know how much each garment costs.

The linemen look through several catalogs of preselected clothing that they can order. Rather than simply giving the linemen the choice of clothing from one manufacturer, Jackson EMC instead opted to work with several companies, including Carhartt, Bulwark and Workrite.

The linemen must select certain colors of garments, such as blue or gray. Each manufacturer offers a different shade of blue, so the linemen can add some variety to their FR workwear. For example, each company offers a button-up shirt, but some are royal blue, while another is darker blue. That way, the linemen look professional when they're servicing customers, but they don't look like they're all in the same exact uniform.

All of the shirts, however, are personalized with a golden triangle, which refers to Jackson EMC's service territory. The garments also have the company's name embroidered under the emblem.

In addition to selecting the color of the shirts, the linemen can also select whether they want a thicker or thinner shirt. All of the garments, however, must meet the minimum standard of 4 calories. Because of the hot climate in the utility's region, the linemen often choose to select the thinnest shirts available to stay cool and comfortable.

During the winter months, however, the linemen often wear FR sweatshirts, heavy brown hooded jackets or heavy-duty workwear.

Often, linemen's coats and sweatshirts last so long that they can wear them from one year to the next. Because these garments are expensive, linemen often choose to buy new T-shirts, work shirts or pants every year, and then buy the outerwear once every few years.

The linemen can either order all of their garments at one time, or they can order them throughout the year. If they need a new FR garment but have already spent their allowance, they can have the option of spending their own money to purchase another FR garment from the catalogs if necessary.

Care and Maintenance

To make sure the garments have their intended life span, linemen must take care of their garments by washing them according to the instructions on the label. Linemen often wash the clothes separately from their other ; but most of the time, they can maintain them like their other garments.

Each garment has a different shelf life, and the durability of the garment depends on the person who is wearing it, and how hard they are on their clothing. Supervisors keep a close eye on how their workers are dressed out in the field to ensure that the linemen are dressed properly and are wearing FR clothing that is in satisfactory condition.

Over the years, FR clothing has improved in durability, wearability and performance out in the field. By wearing the latest FR garments, Jackson EMC linemen are able to stay comfortable and stay safe when working live. Fire-Proof Fashion

What particular challenges do you face when designing/manufacturing clothing and products for the Middle East, compared with other regions?

We do not design or manufacture PPE or clothing ourselves; however, we work closely with our suppliers who support us in terms of product solutions. Due to the climate, the main challenge for this region is manufacturing products which offer a good level of wearer comfort whilst conforming to the relevant safety standards. Wearer comfort is essential to ensure employees use their PPE and clothing correctly. Heat stress is a serious health risk to workers in high temperatures and needs to be minimised through product design wherever relevant.

How much is product design in the oil and gas industry driven by legislation, compared with feedback from customers? Clothing the workforce

Ultimately, product design is driven by legislation and the requirement to conform to the relevant safety standards. However, as innovators within the industry, our brands are continuously working within these parameters to improve both the design and the materials used. R&D not only focusses on improving the technical standards but also on improving wearer comfort, value for money and durability. Customer feedback is an essential part of this process.

How would you typify the demands of oil and gas customers in the Middle East when it comes to clothing and equipment?

The oil and gas industry in the Middle East has historically maintained high standards of health and safety policies. The industry typically demands high quality and high performing products from globally respected brands. http://imgs.syndigate.info/264/896/95/145940749996.jpg

Mobile app and vibration sensors monitor machinery

The SKF Enlight platform combines a new mobile app with a Bluetooth-enabled vibration sensor to enable staff to collect machinery data with no special training (photo). This allows standard mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets, to function as data-collection devices to gather critical machinery data. In the event of a parameter warning or alert, the user can then request an "on- demand diagnostic," whereby the data are sent wirelessly to the SKF Remote Diagnostic Center network, for expert analysis and reporting. This approach offers a user-friendly alternative to dedicated, high-end vibration analyzers that require a high level of staff competence and are particularly expensive for one-off data measurements, says the company. For data collection in hazardous areas, specially built and intrinsically safe ATEX Zone 1-compliant smartphones and tablets can be used. The SKF Wireless Machine Condition Detector (WMCD) is a sensor that mounts magnetically to a machine and measures vibration data. It takes a simultaneous measurement of bearing condition using patented SKF algorithms to assess the severity of any damage or wear.- SKF USA Inc., Lansdale, Pa. www.skfusa.com

This app eases the process of evaluating protective clothing

The FR Clothing smartphone app (photo) provides easy access to key information about flame-resistant (FR) workwear for plant personnel, including information about hazards, safety standards, flame-resistant clothing brands, product lines from several leading vendors and more. The menu allows users to select information based on categories, including hazards such as flash fire, electric arc, molten-metal splatter and fire service. The app also gives users the option to select information by industry, such as oil-and- gas drilling and refining, welding, combustible dust, fire service and more. Additional support tools are provided in the FR Essentials section, which allows users to look up terms in the FR dictionary, watch educational videos, learn more about FR fabric usage and care, read posts in the "Tech Notes" blog, and learn more on temperature ratings. Additional technical content is provided through a frequently asked questions (FAQ) section. - Workrite Uniform, Oxnard, Calif. www.workrite.com

Free programs help improve the design of vibratory systems

This company has developed two free, downloadable programs to simplify the process of determining the proper vibratory equipment for different applications. The Bin Guide selects the proper bin vibrator, again, based on the material being fed, desired feed rate and size Focus on Software and Mobile Apps of the hopper. As the dimensional information is entered, the Bin Guide presents a three-dimensional sketch of the bin geometry. The program offers a complete library of material densities, allowing users to access this information easily. - Eriez, Erie, Pa. www.eriez.com

Vibration-monitoring system builds on iPad capabilities

The VibeRMS LT is an affordable condition-documentation solution for the iPad. This single-channel, vibration-documentation tool lets users view live vibration data (velocity, acceleration, displacement) and create reports at the site using an iPad (photo). Reports can be generated to describe machine data, spectrum data, alerts and alarms, user notes and integrated photos. The Machine Build function includes templates for common machine types (such as motors, pumps and fans), and gives users the ability to combine machine types to create machine-train templates. Such templates can be built onsite using a photograph of the machine. Measurement points are added by the user to complete the template. VibeRMS is designed to take advantage of the iPad's inherent value-added functions, such as its camera, touchscreen capabilities and email access (to allow reports to be shared).- GTI Predictive Technology, Manchester, N.H. www.gtipredictive.com

Comfort and style are more important than ever

Flame-resistant (FR) apparel has been used for many years in the petroleum and chemical industries as well as in the U.S. military. In the early days, industrial FR apparel was designed mainly for flash fire protection and was produced primarily in coverall styles with the intent of providing basic protection.

The recognition of the need for protective clothing in other industries to protect against electric arc flash hazards spurred the development of safety standards like NFPA 70E and ASTM F1506. These standards have evolved to establish requirements for both workplace electrical safety as well as for the textiles used to make the protective apparel worn by electrical workers. This broadened the use of FR into new industries and introduced many more types of wearers to flame-resistant garments.

New fabrics, more options

The use and acceptance of FR apparel within this broader group of industries, particularly those related to arc flash hazards, has increased over the past decade. Workers concerned about heat stress are demanding lighter and more comfortable garments. And although worker protection and compliance to the industry standards continues to be top priority, comfort and style are playing a larger role in the development and production of FR clothing.

Flame-resistant fabric manufacturers have developed a number of new fabrics to address customer requirements. These include fabrics that range from FR cotton/ nylon blend knits to the newer category of modacrylic/ aramid blends that have more recently been introduced to the market. These fabrics have been designed not only to specifically meet the protection needs of industrial electrical workers wanting to comply with NFPA 70E, but also to provide improved comfort for the wearer. FR APPAREL GAINS WIDER APPEAL

Increased wear trials and adoptions of garments made from these new fabrics shows that managers are willing to look at a wide range of options to meet the needs of their particular work environments. Fabrics are being developed to provide a variety of attributes like longer wear life, better colorfastness, water repellency and antimicrobial properties, to name a few.

Garment manufacturers have used these fabrics to create a new range of garments that address the fit and style desires of today's workers. Lead among them is the increased demand for FR denim in a range of fits from slim to relaxed. Other popular garment styles include knit Henley shirts, duck jackets and coveralls, chambray shirts and a variety of pant styles that emulate "street wear." Manufacturers have even taken popular work wear brands and transformed them into protective apparel lines.

Options equal compliance

Today's safety managers have a wide range of options that address potential worker resistance based on old perceptions of FR being uncomfortable or unattractive. Depending on the hazard and work environment, a worker can now wear familiar ensembles like carpenter jeans with a Henley shirt and a hooded sweatshirt.

This focus on comfort, fit and style will help make a company's move into flame-resistant apparel an easier transition - workers who like their FR garments are more likely to wear them. This is good news because the need to protect workers from workplace hazards is greater than ever. New OSHA and national consensus standards are being implemented with greater frequency, affecting new groups of workers.

Don't overlook financial incentives

While protecting workers is the right thing to do, it is also a good financial decision. A company can potentially reduce their legal exposure by meeting recognized industry standards like NFPA 70E, NFPA 2112, ANSI/ISEA 107, and NESC. They may also see a reduction in workers' compensation costs because their employees are better protected. In addition, showing workers that the company cares about their safety can increase worker morale, leading to improved productivity and worker loyalty.

Safety and satisfaction go hand-in-hand

In the end, if you have workers exposed to hazards in the job, whether from flash fire or electric arc flash or even combustible dust, you may find yourself with a need to provide protective apparel. And with the wider range of fabric alternatives, combined with a much broader selection of style options, it is more possible than ever to provide your employees with an FR garment program that provides comfort and worker satisfaction.

Mark Saner is the technical manager for Workrite Uniform Company. He has over 30 years of experience in the fire and safety industry. He is a member of ASTM serving on committees F18 "Electrical Protective Equipment" and F 23 "Protective Clothing" and a member of NFPA, where he participates with NFPA 70E "Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace," NFPA 2112 "Standard on Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire," and NFPA 1975 "Standard on Station/Work Uniforms for Fire and Emergency Services."

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but in the year since EC&M published its first annual construction clothing round-up, we've noticed you seem to be dressing a little sharper a " and safer a " on the jobsite and in the plant.

Of course we're not so bold as to think we're your only source for on-the-job fashion advice, but just in case you were paying attention, we went out and found another trailer's worth of stylish and useful clothing this year for your workplace wardrobea |just in time for the fall fashion season.

Service With Style

What he's wearing: Thanks to all the tradesmen caricatures that have graced TV and movie screens over the years, the soccer moms who call you for electrical service probably have a distorted idea of what a tech looks like a " ripped jeans, a yellowed t-shirt, a a oeWire or Diea tattoo a " so imagine how impressed they'll be when you show up in this sharp ensemble from Red Kap. This breathable, 100% cotton short sleeve shirt will help you keep your cool when Mrs. Smith starts to get upset about the bill, and these have two side pockets for stashing meters, wire nuts, or a stick of deodorant for those times when you aren't feeling sure. And even though the 8-inch Foundation from DeWalt may be as comfortable as those fuzzy you wear at home, be good to your customer's carpet and take them off when you get inside.

What he's carrying: Tool boxes went out of style with the mullet, and tool belts are the #1 cause of plumber's crack, so today's chic service technician carries a tool bag. Klein Tools' durable Tool Tote sports a dozen pockets five inside and seven outside for storing everything you need to troubleshoot and wire in style. Just don't let anyone call it a man purse.

Snuff My Fire

What they're wearing: You're not a firefighter, but 480V can still cook you, so this shirt-and-pants combo from Carhartt can tame the flames from an out-of-control transfer switch and keep you safe. The FR chambray shirt may look mild-mannered, but its Indura Ultra Soft fabric is like a fire extinguisher with sleeves. The company's new FR work dungarees also incorporate Indura Ultra Soft for a comfortable fit In Style ON THE JOB and tough protection. And Workrite's 110NMX-45 coveralls use Nomex IIIA fabric to offer full-body protection without the hassle of maintaining a large wardrobe.

Hold on there, champ, you're not ready to step out onto the floor yet. You may not have to worry about an errant nail gun stapling your toes to the floor, but a pair of tough boots is still a good idea. Wolverine's new 6-inch Cannonsburg boot left has a steel toe and an internal metatarsal guard, and DeWalt's 6-inch Foundation boot right has a heel protection system and a cushion gel bag to keep the bottom of your foot just as safe as the top.

Everything else: Failing to accessorize outside of work will only expose you for the fashion failure you are. Making the same mistake around energized equipment can make all your effort picking out the right protective clothing an exercise in futility. North Safety's Peaks series hard left have four-point suspension, and Bullard's 5100 hard hats right are equipped with accessory slots for mounting faceshields and headsets for added protection. And it never hurts to have a pair of Klein Tools' protective safety glasses around, but there's a good chance it will if you don't.

For the hands: As the old proverb goes, every time you hold a screw or nail between your teeth, a dentist gets a toothache. Strong enough to hold even a screwdriver, the Zeta6 magnets stitched into Illinois Glove Co.'s Silver Back gloves let you keep all that little metal hardware nearby and use your teeth for something that really mattersa |like finishing that last Krispy Kreme before break is over. Warning: Silver Back gloves do not prevent tooth decay.

For the gadgets: All those wireless devices you insist on carrying around may be handy, but don't you wish they were easier to keep track of? The ScotteVest Version Three.0 jacket with detachable sleeves has more than 40 pockets to hold PDAs, cell phones, pagers, and anything else that can store and send digital data. And a system of a oeconduitsa makes it possible to link everything and create your own personal area network. The days of private digital autonomy are upon us.

Protect and Survive

What they're wearing: If the big guy looks serious, it's because safety is no joke. Bright colors, like the safety orange option in Riggs Workwear's line of pocket t-shirts, call attention to you even if your big head doesn't. And when a t-shirt isn't enough, Skillers' ANSI/ISEA-approved high-visibility vest makes it easy for even the most near-sighted driver to see you.

No matter how hardheaded your boss thinks you are, you still need a hard hat. NorthSafety's Peak series hard hats right comply with ANSI Type I requirements, and the plastic shell in Bullard's 911C model left is so tough it can withstand 350Adeg.F for 5 minutesa |even if your brain can't.

Carhartt's denim work dungarees left have triple-stitched main seams so you can abuse them all you want, and Riggs Workwear's Utility center and Workhorse right jeans both have the company's a oeroom to movea fit, which basically translates to a oeloose and comfy.a

Had a little trouble tying your shoes in the past? We won't tell. Red Wing Shoes' -on trail oxford right nixes laces but keeps the safety features like a steel toe and slip-resistant sole. Also incorporating a steel toe, DeWalt's 6-inch Foundation boot center provides a similar level of safety but is more suited to the shoelace-inclined. And Wolverine's 6-inch DuraShocks slip-resistant work boot left has an oil-, water-, and abrasion-resistant polyurethane outsole and features electrical hazard protection.

Don't forget: For elevated work, North Safety's E-Z ON comfort harness goes on easy and stays on firmly to keep you safe even when you fall. Just don't forget the lanyard. In Style ON THE JOB

Never Let 'em See You Sweat

What they're wearing: Super Soakers aren't exactly approved a oetoolsa for the jobsite, so when it gets hot you're going to have to find a better way to stay cool. And unless you feel comfortable asking your co-workers to rub sunblock on your back, going shirtless probably isn't an option. Carhartt's 100% cotton t-shirts are the next best thing, and they're also handy at covering up unsightly back haira |ladies excluded, of course. For below-the- comfort, Skillers' cotton/poly blend pants left and new 100% cotton/canvas pants right are light enough to let your legs breathe but still durable enough to protect them from day-to-day abuse. And for those days when it's so hot you feel like you're working out instead of just working, a few innovative companies have your backa |literally. The patented fabric in Silver Eagle Outfitters' classic cooling vest left has been shown to reduce body temperature and dehydration in extreme heat conditions, and Bullard's Isotherm vest right is equipped with special cooling packs that provide two hours of relief. So much for those afternoon naps in the shade.

On their feet: Hot or not, your feet are going to stink, so you might as well make sure they're comfortable. With their steel toe construction and a removable full-cushion dual-density polymer footbed, Wolverine's DuraShocks slip-resistant work boots left are strong enough for a man but made for a woman. And DeWalt's 5-inch Plunge boot right incorporates the company's air circulation system for enhanced shock absorption.

Don't forget: Your boss called. He said he's tired of you carrying your tools across the jobsite one at a time. It slows things down. Available in 16-inch and 18-inch sizes, Klein Tools' new line of canvas tool bags will hold everything you've got and cut down on those unnecessary trips to the truck.

The Chill is Gone

What they're wearing: Tired of having to huddle up with Jumbo a " that big guy with week-old burrito breath and the steel wool beard a " when it gets cold on the jobsite? Now you can tell him to find a new cuddle buddy. No longer satisfied with just making boots, Timberland recently expanded its PRO series clothing line to include these quilt-lined overalls and this long sleeve Tech t-shirt made of moisture- wicking polyester. And when worn together, Riggs Workwear's long sleeve henley, hooded flannel workshirt a " flannel's back, baby a " and carpenter jeans will help you fend off frostbitea |and Jumbo.

Without boots, hard hats, gloves, and safety glasses, the jobsite would be pain's playground, so keep these items in mind. Not only do Bullard's 5100 series hard hats protect your melon from harm, they keep your face safe from the elements by redirecting rain, sleet, and snow away from it. And new this year to Red Wing's Worx line of work boots is the 8-inch 5348 work boot left that combines a warm Thinsulate lining, a steel toe, and electrical hazard protection to wrap your dogs in multi-layered protection. Wolverine's latest line of DuraShocks slip-resistant boots right has a Gore-Tex waterproof membrane lining so you'll never have to bring an extra pair of to the work site again. And Illinois Glove's suede side cowhide gloves have leather finger tips and a 100% cotton flannel back to keep those rough hands of yours from getting any uglier, while North Safety's N-Vision safety glasses deflect assaults on your eyes and reflect the sun's rays.

Don't forget: So your union rep said a oenoa to adding a 15-minute dance break to the latest labor contract. That doesn't mean you can't get busy every once in a while with Bosch's Power Box AM/FM stereo. It plays your favorite CDs and even has a 4-way GFCI outlet for plugging in your power toolsa |or a strobe light and mirror ball.

Safe At Work

Automotive Manufacturing & Production September 1999

Section: Pg. 40-41; Vol. 111; No. 9; ISSN: 1086-9298 Length: 1182 words Byline: Dejong, Colleen Highlight: There are many business trends affecting on-the-job safety for automotive plants many safety industry companies are beginning to create safety packages for companies

Body

ABSTRACT:

Presented are some of the business trends related to on-the-job safety. First, safety companies are currently bundling random products, either as a package of products for total employee protection, or with services. They are also trying to seek the assistance of other companies to install and audit behavior-based safety training programs that encourage workers to discover dangerous behaviors and take the necessary steps to avoid them. Second is program management. Accordingly, companies of today are embracing various solutions to help users handle safety. Some of the most popular solutions are on-line e-commerce purchase of products and the installation of a system where every employee is given a wallet card profile of the safety equipment he/she needs along with an ID number. Third is product diversification, which came about due to the growing sophistication of the workplace and its hazards. To cite, fabric makers are developing new fabrics and fabric treatments to accommodate customer demands.

You'd think that of all things, on-the-job safety would be immune to business trends. Able, instead, to forge ahead on the strength of lives and limbs saved alone. Noble thought, but you'd be wrong. At a conference held by several safety industry companies, a few trends surfaced--and don't be surprised if they sound familiar ...

Trend One: Bundle Up

Rather than just sell a company a bunch of random products and walk away, safety companies are bundling those products in some way, either as a package of products for total employee protection, or with services. Safe At Work

DuPont Safety Resources (Wilmington, DE), for example, is a consulting arm of DuPont's that will not only train customers in product use, but will also conduct hazard awareness classes so employees know why they have to use the equipment. They will also consult with companies to help them install and audit behavior-based safety training programs that encourage employees to discover dangerous behaviors and take necessary steps to avoid them.

Trend Two: Program Management

This may seem an awful lot like product/service bundling, but it really goes beyond that to take on such things as failure liability, test documentation, and disposable equipment replacement.

Orr Safety Corp. (Louisville, KY), for example, offers what it calls "Managed Safety Solutions." This solution, completely modular in its design, lets users opt for as much or as little help in handling safety as necessary. Some of the solutions presented included on-line e-commerce purchase of products, and a system where every employee of a company is given a wallet card profile of the safety equipment he/she needs along with an ID number. Whenever something needs to be replaced, the employee uses that card to call into an automated ordering system at Orr. Several prompts walk the employee through the ordering process, allowing that person to order within preset limits (so he can't buy work boots for himself and all his Friends). The ordered products are automatically shipped to that employee's location. Orr maintains documentation of orders placed for the company, sending reports as requested.

Taking this one step further is Industrial Scientific Corp. (Oakdale, PA), a gas monitoring systems maker that has actually taken on the accountability--and therefore the liability--of making sure gas monitoring equipment is calibrated, charged, and accurate. Working through 1,200 locations around the world, and with several partner companies, Industrial Scientific will check the equipment, automatically transmitting maintenance and repair records to Industrial Scientific's control center via the Web. This frees up ever- busier safety control and/or MRO managers to do other things, and shifts the worry of accountability to the service provider--in this case, Industrial Scientific.

Trend Three: Product Diversification

There's no such thing as an earplug for every occasion anymore. As the workplace and its hazards grow more sophisticated, so does the equipment designed to protect us from them. Take, for example, Workrite (Oxnard, CA), a company that makes flame resistant (FR) protective apparel. In this case, product lines expanded not because there's more than one type of fire, but because people wearing flame resistant clothing thought they were uncomfortable. Nomex, the leading and probably most effective) FR fabric insulates and protects wearers from fire, but it's also course and doesn't breathe well.

Sure, comparatively speaking, being on fire is a lot more uncomfortable than being itchy and sweaty. But you have to ask yourself, how long can you be itchy and sweaty before you just wish you'd combust and get it over with? So fabric makers developed new fabrics and fabric treatments to accommodate customer demands.

Diversification has even reached down to the very basics of human need--hydration. Sqwincher (Columbus, MS), an enhanced drink for replacing fluids and electrolytes (Gatorade for the working man, basically) has added new flavors and different types of concentrate (liquid and powder) over recent years to accommodate different tastes and working conditions.

Really Bad Hand Shakes Safe At Work

Although hand and arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) sounds contrived to be politically correct or to sell products, according to Tom Votel, president of Ergodyne (St. Paul, MN) it is a very real, very serious problem.

The condition is caused by continuous exposure to vibration over extended periods of time--like if you spend years using hand-held grinders or automatic hammers. It starts out innocuously enough, with slight tingling and numbness in the fingers and hands. But it progresses through blanching of the extremities (your fingers get blotchy and white in spots) to development of gangrene and, finally, loss of digits. The photos of the final stages of this disease strongly resemble pictures of people in the final stages of leprosy. It looks nasty and extremely painful, as you can imagine.

And if you think no one at your company is at risk, consider numbers released by the National Institute of Safety and Health (NIOSH) in June estimating that 250,000 people in truck and auto manufacturing are exposed to dangerous levels of hand/arm vibration. And it only takes about four hours of daily exposure over a period of about six years to develop the syndrome. And once you have it, you can only stop its progression, you cannot repair damage done. So what do you do to prevent it?

Using vibration damping gloves greatly reduces the occurrence and severity of HAVS. Ergodyne's ProFlex 9000 line of gloves contains specially developed polymers that absorb the vibration, keeping it away from workers' extremities.

Interestingly, pointed out Votel, there are no standards in the U.S. to ensure that gloves actually dampen vibration and not merely cover the hands, so buyer beware. However, there are standards already in place in most of Asia and all of Europe. In fact, the U.S. via NIOSH will most likely soon adopt European standards (ISO standard 10819).
