Conclusions are drawn and remedies provided on the basis of concerned issues. Practices, models and strategies adopted by Himalayan and Non- Himalayan states are presented and explained their relevance for the rectification and endorsement of sustainable tourism at destinations. In Kashmir Valley most of the products are gifted by nature and demands vital care and supervision. Abstract: The present investigation was carried out on Lidder drainage basin (catchment) in Kashmir Himalaya supporting a varied topography and exhibiting altitudinal extremes of 1592 m and 5500m (asl). The drainage density (Dd) and stream frequency (Fu) of the Lidder drainage basin is 2.52 km km-2(km length per km2 area) and 3.32 km-2 respectively. Drainage density class of Lidder stream is coarse (Dd<5 km km-2) which signifies that it has efficient drainage. Lidder stream is sixth order stream in which the largest share is contributed by first order streams (60.32%). The different soil erosion levels have been used to classify the Lidder catchment into four soil erosion zones (Zone I, Zone II, Zone III, and Zone IV) with respect to soil erosion intensities. Pilgrimage is an old practice of travelling to the sacred places such as temples, mosques, churches and shrines etc. Religious tourism mixes pilgrimage and features of tourism and is considered a tool for sustainability, change and peace building among communities. It is particularly important for India being the fastest growing segment of tourism and given the fact that the whole country is dotted with important religious sites and is known for largest congregation in the world as in the case of Mahakumbh. While each state of country has a unique mix of religious tourism but the state of Jammu and Kashmir have a wonderful mix of Hindu, Muslim and Sikh religions sites though it is known more for Vaishno Devi shrine and Amarnath yatra. Kashmir Valley in this state is popularly known for its natural beauty and leisure tourism than religious tourism despite the high resources for religious tourism. This study is an attempt to identify and map the religious tourist resources in Kashmir valley. The nature of the study is exploratory and to find answers to queries raised through objectives both primary and secondary data has been used. The mapping of the sites highlighted that Kashmir has a mixture of different religious attractions and some of these attractions are located in close vicinity to one another.

This requirement could have been served by the 1981 District Census Handbooks which contain comprehensive basic information about populatIon by sex including literacy and work partici­ pation but the printing and publication of these handbooks which is the respon­ sibility of the State government will take some time. Until these handbooks are published, it is hoped that the present volume will serve a useful purpose to feed the urgent requirement of all data users. The Director of Census Opserations Shri A. H. Khan, under whose guidance the entire census operations were carried out, deserve all cred it for the success of the operations but he had to leave the organisation because of superannuation before this paper could be made ready for the press. I must record my deepest sense of gratitude to Shri V.S. Verma, Registrar General, India and Shri V.P. Pahalgam is famous for some trekking routes also & is the base camp for Amarnath Pilgrimage. One can go to Aru (10 km from Pahalgam) which is a fine meadow of picturesque scenery and starting point of trekking of (Liddarwat, Kolahoi Glacier & Trsar Lake) Betaab Valley, and Chandanwari. Day 3 Pahalgam - Sonmarg The place provides an ideal base for various trekking routes, high mountain lakes, glaciers, and Sri Amarnath Holy cave. Sonamarg’s importance lies in the fact that it is the last halt on the Kashmir side for the drive from Srinagar to Leh. Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajwas Glacier, Which is a major local attraction during the summer. Day 4 Sonmarg Sightseeing / Leisure Leisure day in Sonmarg, The place provides an ideal base for various trekking routes, high mountain lakes, glaciers, and Sri Amarnath Holy cave.
