A safe and comfortable lifestyle Staying connected…

ot only does Kyalami Estates o er safe living but it creates a wonderful, outdoor lifestyle for myself and my children. The reason Nthis is so important to me is my background - I was a professional showjumper and for many years lived on an equestrian property. In 2005, I was involved in a robbery in my home and I was shot. Post that, a major priority was and is the feeling of safety, as well as community spirit and, having lived now in Kyalami Estates for over 7 years, I truly feel at home here.

The diversity of people that live in the Estate is phenomenal and I am surrounded by great people.

I love my sport and the Estate allows me to have the opportunity of training in the comfort of the Estate and at the exercise park which is in close proximity to my home. This helps keep me in shape for my races.

I run my business from home, as well as home school my three girls. Another great pro is having the clubhouse with extramural activities for them to take part in.

I absolutely love living in this Estate! Sean Henderson

BIRDING IN THE SOUTPANSBERG TEXT AND PHOTOS BY ANTHONY CAVANAGH Time Out Lodge next to Entabeni Forest is ideally situated for birding in the Soutpansberg, and the management and staff were absolute gems.

n Friday 27 April, seventeen Wits Bird Club members arrived at Time Out Lodge some 36km east of Louis Trichardt to Ovisit some of the Soupansberg birding hotspots under the guidance of local birding expert, Samson Malaudzi. A full three-day birding programme had been compiled for the long weekend and our spirits, assisted by some cold beverages, were high.

The next morning we were up and ready just before sun-up and waited for Samson who duly arrived on his motorcycle. To reduce the number of vehicles following in convoy, it was decided to use only the 4x4s and so we travelled in only four vehicles to our rst port of call, which was the Levuvhu River about 10km back down the R524. Samson led us along the path towards the river and immediately a Finfoot was spotted on the water. This superb sighting was followed by that of a White backed night heron which was inadvertently ushed and which then ew across to the other side of the river. It could still be seen however and a number of photos were taken. Another excellent sighting was that of a half collared king sher, which posed contentedly on the wall of the weir. African Black Duck

After a second visit to Muirhead Dam, Bee-eater and Red-faced Cisticola were seen in the surrounding vegetation. Tambourine dove was also seen, although not by the whole group.

We then drove back past Time Out and on to the Entabeni Forest, much of which is now commercial pine forest but with patches of the original Afromontane Forest at higher altitudes. Samson pointed out a Mountain Wagtail in the stream owing at the forest entrance. We then drove up into the forest and stopped at an altitude of about 800m, where we had good views looking down on the hillside. Birds seen here included African re nch, Swee waxbill, Yellow streaked greenbul, Bronze and Red- backed mannikin, African Green pigeon and Yellow fronted Tinkerbird.

Further up the mountain track we stopped at 1000m and Samson pointed out a Bat hawk sitting silently near the top of the tree canopy. At the next patch of indigenous forest we spotted a Grey Cuckooshrike, Dusky Flycatcher and Scaly throated Honeyguide. We continued up to the very top of the forest (1300m) and had our lunch packs provided for us by Wilma and her team. A notable sighting here was a Forest Buzzard on the wing.

After a full day’s birding we arrived back at the lodge and treated ourselves to a few cold beverages while the very friendly and very e cient sta prepared dinner, which was duly served at 6pm.

The next morning at sun-up we headed o to Roodewal Nature Reserve where Samson lead the group on foot for a few hours along some of the trails. Notable sightings included Bar- throated Apalis, Lazy Cisticola, Emerald-spotted wood dove, Sombre Greenbul, Spectacled weaver and numerous other bushveld and woodland birds.

Our next port of call was Muirhead Dam, which is situated on a macadamia nut farm. At the bird hide overlooking the dam, White backed duck, Purple heron, African Jacana and Giant King sher were noted. Samson then led us along the macadamia shell-encrusted road and into the surrounding vegetation to look for Blue spotted wood dove and other specials of the area.

The going underfoot was tricky at times and Back at the lodge after a second full day’s where most of us bought macadamia nuts avoiding the sinister-looking spiders and their birding we got stuck into our cold beverages. and other delicacies from the nearby store, webs that stretched a few metres across became The lodge operated an honesty bar whereby we headed o to Thohoyandou some 30km a primary concern. Samson led the way along one of the undulating trails that took us through natural woodland vegetation. Everyone craned their necks looking up when a bird was sighted, some of the more interesting of which included a Grey- headed Bush-shrike, Bar-throated and Yellow-breasted Apalis, and a Wood owl which we obviously disturbed and which ew silently overhead allowing only a eeting glimpse for those in front but a longer sighting for those further back along the path.

We then drove out of Thohoyandou for about 15km and parked o at The Geese Dam which was alive with water birds. Andy set up his spotting scope, which enabled very close up viewing of some of the specials of this area including Allen’s Gallinule, Pygmy Goose and White- backed duck. Numerous heron and king sher species African Fire nch were seen, and Lance and Karen pointed out an Orange- breasted waxbill coming and going around its nest. The lepidopterists among us had a eld day photographing a Citrus Swallowtail butter y at the dam and many other butter ies over the three days.

On our way back to the lodge we stopped at the Levubu Rugby Club that, judging by the length of the grass covering the pitch, had not hosted a game for many a month. Samson led the way behind one of the goalposts and into the bush that could have swallowed up a ball following a successful conversion, and placed his cordless speaker on a branch and played the call of the Blue–spotted wood dove.

We waited patiently in anticipation of seeing this rarity and Citrus Swallowtail everyone kept very quiet and very still. The silence was then suddenly broken not by a responding Blue spotted dove but by Samson’s phone advising that his battery was failing.

We headed back to the lodge a little disappointed at not seeing the dove but nevertheless very satis ed with the weekend’s birding during which some of the group recorded over a dozen lifers. To show our appreciation for TO LET guiding us to some of the local birding hot spots and for Kyalami Estate his excellent spotting, Andy presented Samson with a well deserved bonus to which everyone had contributed. After Rental Agent another excellent dinner we said our farewells as most of us set o early the next morning to avoid the holiday Kim Dinham tra c heading back to Jhb, but not before collecting our packet of bacon and egg sandwiches that Wilma had very thoughtfully prepared for us. TODAY’S CH LD CHILD ABUSE An epidemic of alarming proportions. BY BEV HERMANSON

cover Medico-legal Examinations, Forensic Assessments, Psychological Evaluations, Therapeutic Counselling and Support, and help with the prosecution process.

“Tackling child abuse head on is an expensive process,” explains Prof Robinson. “The cost is in excess of R15000 per child and it can take up to two years for a case to get to court. But we go even further than prosecution, we aim to reduce the incidences of child abuse where possible so we also run programmes to rehabilitate the o enders and a support programme, SPARC, (Support Programme for Abuse-Reactive Children), aimed at stopping them from becoming potential o enders themselves.”

SAFE HOUSES TBF has a medical examination department at the Charlotte Maxexe Academic Hospital (Joburg Gen) in and there is a safe house in where a limited number of the children are accommodated if the social workers anticipate the potential of further abuse happening in their homes. Alternatively, they are sent to other places of safety while the court case is prepared.

FUNDING TBF ambassadors are an essential part of keeping the organisation alive and functional. A series of fundraisers are held, such as the gala dinner that’s taking place at the Michelangelo Hotel this winter. Fortunately, the dinner is sold out, but many more events are needed to help with the vital work that TBF performs. So, if you are a good organiser, or have the time and energy to get involved, contact the Teddy Bear Foundation and let them know that you are willing and able.

Visit //ttbc.org.za/ for more information or to make a donation.

he abuse of children knows no social boundaries. This type of abuse happens as much in wealthy families as it does in poor communities Twhere living conditions are dire. “The statistics are not looking great,” says Professor Tanya Marie Robinson, who is a forensics specialist and Ambassador for the Teddy Bear Foundation. “The latest reports show that the number of violent crimes against children is very high. What’s concerning is that child abuse is still very much under-reported. Two out of every three cases is not reported and one can understand why. For the abused children, the family is their only resource, so if the abuse happens in the home, (and more than 7 out of 10 children are abused by a family member or someone known to them), after they have reported the abuse, they still have to go home and face the same conditions.”

“Our systems let us down. The Department of Social Development doesn’t have the resources, which is why the work that TBF is doing is so important. TBF is pretty much the only place where children who have been abused can be forensically assessed.”

THE FUNCTIONS OF THE TEDDY BEAR FOUNDATION It’s a well-known method of working with abused children – to give them a teddy bear or a doll both as comfort and as a way to better understand the extent of the abuse that they have su ered as they show where on the toy they were touched or hurt. The Teddy Bear is the organisation’s symbol of comfort and hope, but the services are a lot more extensive and involved. Run by a team of dedicated directors under the leadership of Dr Shaheda Omar, this NPO has a network of support services that

Psychological Evaluations • This service was established speci cally for children with cognitive disabilities for the purpose of providing them with fair access to the criminal justice system. In the context of sexual abuse cases, the psychological assessment that has to CHILD ABUSE be conducted depends on the psychological questions posed by the court. In most cases, the psychological assessments are aimed at determining the victims’ mental age as opposed to their chronological age, their capacity to testify with regard to an alleged crime, and the impact of the trauma on the victims.

Therapeutic Counselling and Support • Child abuse causes trauma and emotional scars that can have a negative impact on a child’s development and result in long-term consequences. Every victim of child abuse and their family is provided with the opportunity to receive therapeutic counselling and support. This enables the child and family to assume a sense of mastery to cope with the trauma. Supportive counselling is also provided to the caregivers of those children who have been abused, as the better equipped the caregivers are to cope with the trauma, the better they are able to support the child through the process.

Court Preparation and Support • The Court Preparation and Support programme was established in June 1997. It focuses on providing children and parents with skills, emotional support and legal knowledge in preparation for their appearance in court. The programme is process-oriented in that it provides support for the children and their families from the moment they enter the programme, right through the often lengthy legal process, with debrie ng thereafter.

OUTREACH School awareness programme (SAFE) • The SAFE programme is a prevention model creating awareness in learners and educators about their rights and responsibilities. This expands on acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. This programme also has a protocol training manual for educators on the identi cation, management and legislation pertaining to cases of child abuse. WHAT TBF DOES Sexual Violence Initiative in Schools (SEVISA) • This project addresses gender-based violence in schools - it focuses on zero tolerance to sexual violence in the schools. The organisation was started during 1986 in response to an urgent need for DIVERSION medical examinations for sexually abused children. Treating child abuse is a Support Programme for Abuse Reactive Children highly specialised eld of expertise, requiring the highest level of sensitivity, care • The SPARC programme gives the children a second chance in and con dence in making diagnoses and the subsequent decisions, thereby life by diverting them away from the criminal justice system and ensuring the best interests of the child. stopping them from becoming potential o enders. Over 30 years, TBF has grown into a unique and fully- edged holistic service for abused children. All services are at no cost to those who need them and are unreservedly available to everyone.

VICTIM SUPPORT SERVICES Medico-legal Examinations • The Teddy Bear Foundation’s Medico-legal Clinic is a specialised medical facility for children who have been abused or neglected and is also a training service for medical professionals working in the child protection eld. It is based within the Charlotte Maxexe Academic Hospital, and is run by a multi-disciplinary team of paediatricians, doctors, forensic nurses, social workers and volunteers.

Forensic Assessments • Forensic assessments form the basis of court proceedings in convicting perpetrators of violence against children. They take the form of a structured process where the child is engaged through various techniques, by TBF’s quali ed social workers. The aim is to elicit information from the child victim regarding the details of an alleged crime, and then to verify these through collateral sources, such as witnesses and other people known to the victim.
