Introduction In urban areas including smaller towns, the presence of ambient artificial particulate matters (PM) (e.g., aged fine PM and asbestos) and biological particles has been one of the main causes of adverse effects on human health and air quality. Bioaerosols are airborne particles of biological origin (e.g., bacteria, fungi, pollen, viruses). Some biological contaminants trigger allergic reactions, including hypersensitivity pneumonitis, allergic rhinitis, and some types of asthma. In Japan, there is peculiar annual variation in these ambient PM due to the sources as well as the changing weather. Most synergistic effects take place during spring because of windborne pollen from trees, especially Japanese cedar trees. From 1949 to 1970, a large number of Japanese cedar trees were planted in many parts of Japanese Island because of a great demand for new housing after World War II. -

This time we are starting sales of the new product, the “JR-KYUSHU RAIL PASS (FUKUOKA WIDE)” with the aim of promoting the further use of railways by passengers who are foreign visitors to Japan. Fukuoka includes the two largest cities on Kyushu, Fukuoka and Kitakyushu, and much of Kyushu's industry. It also includes a number of small islands near the north coast of Kyushu. I had been a paper boy for the Oregonian in Hillsboro,1 when the city of Portland acquired its first “sister city,” Sapporo. This city, capital and largest city on the island and prefecture of Hokkaido, was later to host the winter Olympics (1972). I had, however, never seriously considered visiting Sapporo until a trip to Japan in early 2003. It was the day after New Year’s when I took the Yamanote Line from Ueno Station in Tokyo to the northern terminus of the Hameda International Airport Monorail line, for the flight to Sapporo. What a change Sapporo is from Honshu and even northern Kyushu. As one crosses Tsugaro Kaikyo and approaches the southeastern coast of Hokkaido, it becomes clear that things are very different. My first thought was of Texas with a backdrop of Oregon’s snow-capped peaks. Compared to the seemingly uninterrupted 600-mile coastal strip of urbanization (except by sea approaching mountains from north of Tokyo to south of Fukuoka on Kyushu was long gone. Instead, there were spaces as wide open, by comparison, as west Texas compared to the urbanization of the U.S. -

Kitakyushu and Fukuoka are, respectively, the last stations on the Shinkansen high speed rail line that starts in Tokyo. The larger and more prosperous of the two urban areas is Fukuoka. The trip to Fukuoka started at Kyoto Station, from which I took the Shinkansen southward to Kitakyushsu, another urban area of more than 1,000,000. Kitakyushu and Fukuoka are barely 30 miles apart, but there is a mountain range Hakata Station Fukuoka 1 and a good deal of open space between the two. It would probably be correct to consider Fukuoka and Kitakyushu a single metropolitan area (labor market). -

Urban centres have been the dynamos of growth in India. This has placed severe stress on the cities and concomitant pressure on its transit systems. A meaningful and sustainable mass transit system is vital sinew of urbanisation. With success of Delhi’s Metro System, government is encouraging cities with population more than 2 milion to have Metro systems. Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad are being joined by smaller cities like Jaipur, Kochi and Gurgaon. It is expected that by end of the Twelfth Five Year Plan India will have more than 400 km of operational metro rail (up from present 223 km). The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) has been set up by the Government to provide a continuing forum for policy dialogue to energise and sustain the growth of manufacturing industries in India. A meeting was organized by NMCC on May 03, 2012 and one of the agenda items in that meeting was “Promotion of Manufacturing for Metro System in India as well as formation of Standards for the same”. In view of the NMCC meeting and heavy investments planned in metro systems, thereafter, Ministry of Urban Development (MOUD) have taken the initiative to form a committee for “Standardization and Indigenization of Metro Rail Systems” in May 2012. The Committee had a series of meetings in June-August 2012 and prepared a Base Paper. -
