Five cases of colony emigration induced by removal of nest envelope and combs and a single one by manipulation are described. The disturbance was followed by defensive patterns, buzz running, and adult dispersion. An odor trail created by abdomen dragging, probably depositing venom or Dufour’s gland secretions, connected the original nest to the newly selected nesting place and guided the emigration. The substrate of the selected nesting place is intensely sprayed with venom prior to emigration, and this chemical cue marked the emigration end point. The colony moves to the new site in a diffuse cloud with no temporary clusters formed along the odor trail. At the original nest, scouts performed rapid gaster dragging and intense mouth contacts stimulating inactive individuals to depart. Males were unable to follow the swarm. Individual scouts switched between different behavioral tasks before and after colony emigration. -

Of the associated entomofauna phytophagous beetles (Coleoptera) of various taxonomic groups adapted their life history to this ancient host tree. This occurred either already before the late Gondwanian interruption of the previously joint Araucaria distribution or only later in the already geographically separated populations. A bibliographic survey of the eastern and western coleopterans recorded on Araucaria trees resulted in well over 200 species belonging to 17 families. These studies include records of beetles living on 12 of the 19 extant Araucaria species. Their occurrence and adaptations to the host trees are discussed under aspects of evolution and co- speciation. Ten taxa were recorded, and their taxonomic positions are shown in a table. In 2004, we began an investigation of avian parasitic diseases at the Wild Animal Medical Center of the Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine of Rakuno Gakuen University, Japan (Asakawa 2010; Asakawa et al. 2002, 2013; Hirayama et al. 2013). This paper summarizes the findings of seven publications on avian ticks and parasitic mites (Nakamura et al. 2003; Uemura et al. 2010; Yoshino et al. 2003, 2009a, b, 2011, 2013). During submission of a publication for the proceedings of the 14th International Congress of Acarology, Kyoto, taxonomical inconsistencies, including invalid names or synonyms for mite species, were reported to us. -

Describimos características de los nidos, huevos, polluelos y su ubicación. La especie fue registrada por primera vez en 2013 mediante la grabación de vocalizaciones en el Golfo de Fonseca. El nido se encontró a una altura de 1 m, elaborado de ramas de mangle entrelazadas y una base de hojas, en forma de canasta de 28 cm de diámetro, contenía cinco huevos de coloración blanquecinos con manchas marrones, los cuales median 4.5x3.5 cm, el período reproductivo es de mayo a noviembre. ABSTRACT We present information on the nesting of the Mangrove Rail Rallus longirostris in Bahía de La Unión, which represents the first reproductive area of this species in El Salvador. We describe the characteristics of nests, eggs, chicks and their location. The species was first recorded in 2013 when recording vocalizations in the Golfo de Fonseca. The nest was found at a height of 1 m, made of interlocking mangrove branches and a base of leaves, in the form of a 28 cm diameter basket, containing five whitish eggs with brown spots, measuring 4.5x3.5 cm, the reproductive period is from May to November. -

Systematics and Evolution of New Caledonian Araucaria A thesis submitted to the University of Edinburgh for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Mai-lan Kranitz PhD thesis The University of Edinburgh September 2005 ABSTRACT New Caledonia is a global biodiversity hotspot and contains more than 2300 endemic species including 7% of the world’s conifers. No other region in the world with such a small area possesses such a rich and distinctive conifer flora, and 13 of the world’s 19 Araucaria species are endemic to New Caledonia. This thesis has investigated the evolution and systematics of this group. A molecular phylogenetic study based on sequence data from two chloroplast regions resolved all 13 New Caledonian species as a monophyletic group, sister to the Norfolk Island Pine ( A. heterophylla ). The relationships between the New Caledonian species was not fully resolved as little sequence variability was detected, however, three main groups were defined. The species with bigger leaves occupied a basal polytomy, whereas the vast majority of species with smaller leaves were grouped together in a clade. Within this ‘small leaved’ clade, the three New Caledonian species with a coastal distribution formed another monophyletic group. The timing of the radiation of all these species was tested via a molecular clock approach using different calibration tools (fossil data, geological events, substitution rates). The precise dating of the New Caledonian radiation remains uncertain because different calibration methods give different dates. However, it seems likely to have occurred between 10 and 43 mya . What can be said is that the limited sequence divergence between these species (which in other groups would be typical of <3 million years divergence), does not tally with the fossil record and geological events. -

Tropical Birding Trip Report Costa Rica: The Introtour | July 2017 A Tropical Birding SET DEPARTURE tour Costa Rica: The Introtour July 15 – 25, 2017 Tour Leader: Scott Olmstead INTRODUCTION This year’s July departure of the Costa Rica Introtour had great luck with many of the most spectacular, emblematic birds of Central America like Resplendent Quetzal (photo right), Three-wattled Bellbird, Great Green and Scarlet Macaws, and Keel-billed Toucan, as well as some excellent rarities like Black Hawk- Eagle, Ochraceous Pewee and Azure-hooded Jay. We enjoyed great weather for birding, with almost no morning rain throughout the trip, and just a few delightful afternoon and evening showers. Comfortable accommodations, iconic landscapes, abundant, delicious meals, and our charismatic driver Luís enhanced our time in the field. Our group, made up of a mix of first- timers to the tropics and more seasoned tropical birders, got along wonderfully, with some spying their first-ever toucans, motmots, puffbirds, etc. on this trip, and others ticking off regional endemics and hard-to-get species. We were fortunate to have several high-quality mammal sightings, including three monkey species, Derby’s Wooly Opossum, Northern Tamandua, and Tayra. And on a daily basis we saw many other fantastic and odd tropical treasures like glorious Blue Morpho butterflies, enormous tree ferns, and giant stick insects! These feather mites are reported for the first time in South Korea: Avenzoaria totani (Canestrini, 1978), Ingrassia veligera Oudemans, 1904 and Mon tchadskiana glareolae Dabert and Ehrnsberger, 1999. In this study, we provide morphological diagnoses and illustrations. Additionally, we provide partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene as molecular characteristics of three species.
