The Philippines is a consumer, source, and transit point for IWT, threatening endemic species populations, economic development, and biodiversity. The country has been a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity since 1992. The value of IWT in the Philippines is estimated at ₱50 billion a year (roughly equivalent to $1billion), which includes the market value of wildlife and its resources, their ecological role and value, damage to habitats incurred during poaching, and loss in potential -

Aims and Objectives: Being indigenous to the Philippines, the initial reports of hematological values and the common diseases of this subspecies are significant to be determined and studied. This study was conducted to provide an initial report on hematological and serum biochemical values and the detection of antibodies against C. psittaci in the blood serum of Tarictic, Rufuos, and Palawan hornbill at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center. 山階鳥研報 (J. Yamashina Inst. Ornithol. ), 27: 12-29, 1995 Status of Birds at the U. P. Laguna Land Grant, Luzon, Philippines Juan Carlos T. Gonzalez* Abstract The avifauna of the U. P. Laguna Land Grant in Southern Luzon consists of 101 species belonging to 41 families. Collectively, a total of 78 bird species were recorded along four transects selected for their different habitats: mature secondary forest (44 species), heavily disturbed forest (35), grassland with scattered remnant forest trees (38) and second growth forest with mixed cultivated areas (35). Species richness and abundance were determined for each transect and the feeding guild, residency and conservation status for each bird species were discussed. Significant reduction in diversity and endemicity are attributed mainly to habitat degradation caused by extensive logging activites, both local and commercial. Non-endemic birds colonized the overlogged areas while only a few strictly forest birds tolerate non-native vegetation. The inclusion of the lowland forests of Luzon such as the Paete-Pakil-Kalayaan zone as one of the most critical Endemic Bird Areas (EBA) in the world should prompt concerned parties to increase its protection efforts in the area and ensure the long-term preservation of its biodiversity. ECOLOGY AND CONSERVATION OF LARGE-BODIED AVIAN FRUGIVORES OF LUZON, PHILIPPINES CARMELA P. ESPAÑOLA A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Manchester Metropolitan University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Division of Biology and Conservation Ecology School of Science and the Environment Manchester Metropolitan University 2013 ABSTRACT Avian frugivores across Southeast Asia, and in the Philippines in particular, are seriously threatened owing to massive loss of habitat and direct exploitation through hunting and the pet trade. Their declines may have dire consequences for wider ecological processes as many frugivores are also seed dispersers. Conservation programmes in the Philippines are crippled by a lack of knowledge on the status, abundance and ecology of frugivores which extend to other endemic species in the country. This PhD identified factors that influenced frugivore community composition as well as drivers of frugivore distribution across Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines. It also developed cost-effective methods for gathering baseline ecological data to inform conservation measures for frugivores and other little-known species over large geographical areas. This included a way of correcting for the bias caused by non-random transect placement in a study site which is often the case during bird surveys in the tropics. Twenty-five species of pigeons, parrots and hornbills were surveyed using distance sampling along nearly 500 km of line transects at 14 sites across the island of Luzon. I documented surprisingly few reliable disappearances of frugivores from individual forest patches – in fact this and other fieldwork since 2000 has increased the known extent of occurrence of several species. -
The Threatened and Near-Threatened Birds of Luzon, Philippines, and the Role of the Sierra Madre Mountains in Their Conservation
Bird Conservation International (1995) 5:79-115 The threatened and near-threatened birds of Luzon, Philippines, and the role of the Sierra Madre mountains in their conservation MICHAEL K0IE POULSEN Summary Fieldwork on the distribution, status and ecology of birds was conducted in the northern Sierra Madre mountain range, Luzon, Philippines, during March-May 1991 and March- May 1992. The findings show the area to be one of the most important for conservation of threatened species of birds in all Asia. The results are here combined with evidence from earlier surveys by other searchers. Fourteen threatened and 18 near-threatened species are now known from the area. This paper reports on all the threatened and near-threatened resident species of the island of Luzon, with special emphasis on their occurrence in the Sierra Madre mountains. In addition, the paper treats species with very limited global distribution that breed in Luzon, and lists species of forest birds endemic to the Philippines that have not previously been reported from the Sierra Madre mountains. Maps show the known sites for 17 species of special concern for conservation. New data on the altitudinal distribution of threatened and near-threatened species sug- gest that it is essential to protect primary forest at all elevations. Introduction No other Asian island has as many threatened species of bird as Luzon, closely followed by Mindanao, both in the Philippines. A total of 42 species listed as threatened or near-threatened by Collar and Andrew (1988) are known from Luzon including 15 breeding species listed as threatened. The vast majority of species of special concern to conservation (threatened, near- threatened and restricted-range) depend on forested habitats. -

DOP Government Center, Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, Philippines Article published on August 14, 2018 Key words: Bats, Birds, Endemic, Non-volant, Vulnerable Abstract To assess the species richness and endemism of birds and mammals, this study was conducted in and near eight waterfalls in Agusan del Sur, Philippines. A combination of mist netting, transect walk, and McKinnon’s List methods were employed to document birds while mammals were documented through mist netting and key informant interviews. Fifty-nine species of birds and 13 mammalian species (nine bats and four non-Volant mammals) were recorded. Among the sampling sites, Siete Andanas Falls in Bunawan, Agusan del Sur had the highest species richness of birds (S=45) and mammals (S=7). The bird species, Phapitreron leucotis and Todiramphus chloris were present in all sampling sites. Out of the recorded bird species, 22 are endemic of which one is endangered (Nisaetus pinskeri) while two (Buceros mindanensis and Lonchura oryzivora) are vulnerable. The bat species, Cynopterus brachyotis and the endemic Ptenochirus jagori were present in seven sampling sites but absent in Suyak Falls in Esperanza, Agusan del Sur.
