Bird watching at American Cementary and Manila Bay (outside Pasay city). 18.2. Tour to Candaba swamps north of Manila. Unfortunately they were dry. 19.2. Bus to Malicboy 130 km south of Manila. Birdwatching in Quezon Natio- nal Park. 20.2. Birdwatching in Quezon N.P. 21.2. Visited the fishponds 3 km north of Malicboy. Quezon N.P. in the after- noon. Bus back to Manila in the evening. 22.2. Airbus 300 to Hong Kong in the morning. Birdwatching in Kowloon Park in the afternoon. 23.2. Visit to the Zoo. Invited to Dim Sum lunch. 24.2. Mai Po marshes the whole day. 25.2. Mai Po marshes. In the evening we crossed the chinese border. Train to Guangzhou (soft-seat). Slept outside a hotel (low-budget travelling). -

Certain taxonomic changes made by Cheke & Mann (2001) are here explained and justified. Dicaeum haematostictum Sharpe, 1876, is split from D. australe (Hermann, 1783). D. aeruginosum Bourns & Worcester, 1894 is merged into D. agile (Tickell, 1833). The genus Chalcoparia Cabanis, 1851, is re-estab- lished for (Motacilla) singalensis Gmelin, 1788. The taxon Leptocoma sperata marinduquensis (duPont, 1971), is shown to be based on a specimen of Aethopyga siparaja magnifica Sharpe, 1876. Aethopyga vigor- sii (Sykes, 1832) is split from A. siparaja (Raffles, 1822). Cheke & Mann (op. cit.) mistakenly omitted two forms, Anthreptes malacensis erixanthus Oberholser, 1932 and Arachnothera longirostra zarhina Ober- holser, 1912. Five subspecies are removed from Aethopyga shelleyi Sharpe, 1876 to create the polytypic A. bella, Tweeddale, 1877. The Arachnothera affinis (Horsfield, 1822)/modesta (Eyton, 1839)/everetti (Sharpe, 1893) complex is re-evaluated in the light of the revision by Davison in Smythies (1999). Introduction In a recent publication (Cheke & Mann, 2001) some taxonomic changes were made to members of this family occurring in Asia. -

Agathis Macrophylla Araucariaceae (Lindley) Masters
Agathis macrophylla (Lindley) Masters Araucariaceae LOCAL NAMES English (pacific kauri); Fijian (da‘ua,dakua dina,makadri,makadre,takua makadre,dakua,dakua makadre) BOTANIC DESCRIPTION Agathis macrophylla is a tall tree typically to about 30–40 m tall, 3 m in bole diameter, with a broad canopy of up to 36 m diameter. Branches may be erect to horizontal and massive. Mature specimens have wide, spreading root systems whereas seedlings and young specimens have a vigorous taproot with one or more whorls of lateral roots. Leaves simple, entire, elliptic to lanceolate, leathery, and dark green, and shiny above and often glaucous below; about 7–15 cm long and 2–3.5 cm wide, with many close inconspicuous parallel veins. The leaves taper to a more or less pointed tip, rounded at the base, with the margins curved down at the edge. Petioles short, from almost sessile up to 5 mm long. Cones egg-shaped at the end of the first year, about 5 cm long, and 3 cm in diameter, more or less round at the end of the second year, 8–10 cm in diameter. Female cones much larger than males, globular, on thick woody stalks, green, slightly glaucous, turning brownish during ripening. Seeds brown, small, ovoid to globose, flattened, winged, and attached to a triangular cone scale about 2.5 cm across. BIOLOGY Pacific kauri is monoecious and produces cones instead of flowers. The first female cones begin to be produced at about 10 years old and take up to 2 years to mature (more often in 12-15 months). -

Birds from Canlaon Volcano in the Highlands of Negros Island in the Philippines
July, 1956 283 BIRDS FROM CANLAON VOLCANO IN THE HIGHLANDS OF NEGROS ISLAND IN THE PHILIPPINES By S. DILLON RIPLEY and D. S. RABOR Several ornithological collectors have worked on Negros Island, which is the fourth largest of the 7090 islands that form the Philippine Archipelago. However, John White- head, the famous English naturalist, was the only person who collected extensively in the highlands of this island. Whitehead worked on the slopes of Canlaon Volcano, in the north-central section in March and April, 1896. Since that time no other collector has visited this volcano until April and May, 1953, when one of us, Rabor, collected in prac- tically the same places in which Whitehead worked. This study of the birds of the high- lands of Negros Island was carried on chiefly through the aid of the Peabody Museum of Natural History of Yale University. TOPOGRAPHY AND GEOLOGY OF THE COLLECTING LOCALITIES The principal central mountain chain traverses Negros Island from its northeast corner south to the southern end. This range lies closer to the east side than to the west and forms a divide throughout the extent of the island. A dormant volcano, Canlaon, with an elevation of about 8200 feet, is the most prominent peak in the north-central section of the mountain chain, and it is easily the dominant landmark of the western coastal plain. Many of the mountains of Negros Island are volcanic (Smith, 1924). The north- western region, where most of the sugar cane is grown, is mainly of volcanic origin, whereas the southeastern portion consists of folded and faulted plutonic rocks, slates, and jaspers, probably of Mesozoic Age, and some Tertiary extrusives, all more or less dissected and worn down by erosion. -

Is the Concept of “Free and Prior Informed Consent” Effective as a Legal and Governance Tool to Ensure Equity among Indigenous Peoples? (A Case Study on the Experience of the Tagbanua on Free Prior Informed 1 Consent, Coron Island, Palawan, Philippines) Grizelda Mayo-Anda, Loreto L. Cagatulla, Antonio G. M. La Viňa EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Free and Prior Informed Consent is a process established under Philippine law which seeks to guarantee the participation of indigenous communities in decision making on matters affecting their common interests. This paper looks into the experience of the Tagbanua indigenous community of Coron Island, Palawan, Philippines on the application of the concept of Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). The study area focused on the two Tagbanua communities in Coron Island - Barangays Banuang Daan and Cabugao. Coron Island is home to the seafaring Tagbanua tribes and has been identified as one of the country’s important areas for biodiversity.. The Tagbanua community has managed to secure their tenure on the island and its surrounding waters through the issuance and recognition by the government of an ancestral domain title, one of the first examples of its kind in the Philippines. The study concludes that the exercise of Free Prior and Informed Consent by the Tagbanua community is an important and fundamental tool to ensure that the indigenous peoples will benefit from the resources within their ancestral territory. Among others, it has given them a new tool to protect their environment and to obtain an equitable share of the economic benefits of their natural resources. The study also shows that the exercise of Free Prior and Informed Consent by the Tagbanua communities of Barangays Banuang Daan and Cabugao was recognized by government and non-government stakeholders, although in varying degrees. -

SIERRA LEONE 9 - 24 FEBRUARY 2008 TOUR REPORT LEADER: NIK BORROW Our first exploratory tour to Sierra Leone was pretty tough going at times but certainly pulled a few goodies out of the bag! A respectable total of 305 species were recorded of which all but 12 were seen. The notable major highlights had to be the wonderful views of the amazing Yellow-headed Picathartes preening and posing at their nest site before going to roost, the restricted range Turati’s Boubou and no less than four stunning Gola Malimbes for everyone! Singing Brown Nightjars were discovered, sublime Egyptian Plovers enjoyed, colourful Buff-throated Sunbirds enthralled and secretive Capuchin Babblers were tracked down. Mammals were sparse but we had great looks at the beautiful Diana Monkey and Olive Colobus and we even almost saw a Pygmy Hippo that crashed away from us through the undergrowth! Other specialties included Red-chested Goshawk, Latham’s Forest Francolin, Black-shouldered and Standard-winged Nightjars, Blue-headed Bee-eater, Brown- cheeked and Yellow-casqued Hornbills, Hairy-breasted Barbet, Spotted Honeyguide, Little Green, Melancholy and Fire-bellied Woodpeckers, Fanti Saw-wing, Preuss’s Cliff Swallow, Pied-winged Swallow, Green-tailed and Grey-headed Bristlebills, Western Bearded Greenbul, Yellow-bearded Greenbul, Western Forest Robin, White-tailed Alethe, Finsch’s Flycatcher Thrush, Forest Scrub Robin, Sharpe’s Apalis, Kemp’s Longbill, Olivaceous and Ussher’s Flycatchers, Red-cheeked Wattle-eye, Rufous-winged and Puvel’s Illadopsis, Red-billed Helmet-shrike, Copper-tailed Glossy and Emerald Starlings, Maxwell’s Black Weaver, Red-vented Malimbe, Yellow-winged Pytilia and Dybowski’s Twinspot.
