Studies have shown that children who read during their summer vacation retain more of what they have learned throughout the school year and are better pre- pared for that first day of school in the fall. You can encourage your youngster to become an avid summer reader by giving him/her lots of reading choices. In addition to books, provide magazines and newspapers. Attached are some suggested book titles you may want your child to choose to read over the summer. The Hall Memorial Library staff will be available for suggestions as well. Along with the summer reading program at Hall Memorial Library we would also like to encourage you to participate in the Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge: Connecticut Reads 2011. Information about the Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge and library summer reading programs can be found at: http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/cwp/view.asp?a=2683&Q=320322 Summer reading can be fun and easy with the attached Reading Log. Youngsters may read a book to an adult or sibling, have books read to them, or youngsters may read books silently. Either way, please “log” every time your youngster has read or has had a book read to them on the Reading Log. As 5th Graders at Windermere School return your reading logs to your classroom teacher during the first week of the new school year 2012-2013. Youngsters who have participated in the Summer Reading Program will be acknowledged by the Windermere Media Center. If the reading logs are mis- placed just keep a record of book titles that have been read and return that list to your classroom teacher. Our overall objective is to encourage and recognize those students who have practiced their reading skills over the summer months. All that is really needed for the Summer Reading Program is parental/adult encouragement and perhaps a few trips to the Library. Please help us make this a worthwhile summer of reading fun for your young- ster.
