INDEPENDENT PUBLISHERS GROUP A Matter of Inches How I Survived in the Crease and Beyond Clint Malarchuk, Dan Robson Summary No job in the world of sports is as intimidating, exhilarating, and stressridden as that of a hockey goaltender. Clint Malarchuk did that job while suffering high anxiety, depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder and had his career nearly literally cut short by a skate across his neck, to date the most gruesome injury hockey has ever seen. This autobiography takes readers deep into the troubled mind of Clint Malarchuk, the former NHL goaltender for the Quebec Nordiques, the Washington Capitals, and the Buffalo Sabres. When his carotid artery was slashed during a collision in the crease, Malarchuk nearly died on the ice. Forever changed, he struggled deeply with depression and a dependence on alcohol, which nearly cost him his life and left a bullet in his head. Now working as the goaltender coach for the Calgary Flames, Malarchuk reflects on his past as he looks forward to the future, every day grateful to have cheated deathtwice. 9781629370491 Pub Date: 11/1/14 Author Bio Ship Date: 11/1/14 Clint Malarchuk was a goaltender with the Quebec Nordiques, the Washington Capitals, and the Buffalo Sabres. $25.95 Hardcover Originally from Grande Prairie, Alberta, he now divides his time between Calgary, where he is the goaltender coach for the Calgary Flames, and his ranch in Nevada. • Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

It was a 3-2 final with Federov scoring the winner with 28 seconds left on the clock. This one, however, was special as it marked a milestone for one of the greatest professional coaches of any sport in any time. Scotty Bowman, currently the coach of the Detroit Red Wings, was behind the bench in his 2,000th NHL game on Friday night as Detroit beat Vancouver. The previous record was 1,607 set by Al Arbour of the New York Islanders, a record passed by Bowman five years ago.

  • Western Canada Wasn't Kind to Scotty Bowman
Memories of Sport By Kent Morgan (courtesy of Canstar Community News) Western Canada wasn't kind to Scotty Bowman When Scotty Bowman was beginning his Hall of Fame coaching career, Western Canada was not welcoming. In 1957 Bowman came west with the Ottawa Canadiens as general manager and coach Sam Pollock's assistant. The powerful Montreal Canadiens sponsored team was highly favoured to beat the upstart Flin Flon Bombers in the Canadian junior final, but Bombers prevailed in a series that went seven games. The next season when the Memorial Cup final was played in the east, the pair were in charge of the renamed Ottawa-Hull Canadiens. After knocking off Toronto Marlboros in the eastern final, Ottawa-Hull met another Montreal farm squad, the Regina Pats, and won the Canadian junior championship in six games. In 1959, the 25-year-old Bowman was in charge of a different Habs farm squad, the Peterborough TPT Petes. The Ontario champions - with future NHLers Wayne Connelly, Jimmy Roberts, Barclay Plager and Denis DeJordy - in the lineup beat Pollock's Ottawa- Hull squad in the Eastern final. Bowman had to bring his team west to Winnipeg where a somewhat-surprising opponent was waiting for them. The Winnipeg Braves had won the MJHL championship over another Montreal- sponsored squad, the St. Boniface Canadiens, and reached the Western final by beating the Fort William Canadiens. Flin Flon led by River Heights product Cliff Pennington, the SJHL scoring champion and most valuable player, was heavily favoured in the final. The Bombers won the first two games in Flin Flon, 5-1 and 7-4.

  • THE KNOWLEDGE PROJECT #49 Brent Gilchrist
THE KNOWLEDGE PROJECT #49 Brent Gilchrist fs.blog My guest today is former professional hockey player Brent Gilchrist. Brent spent 15 years in the NHL, playing 792 games with the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, and Nashville Predators. He won a Stanley Cup with the Red Wings in 1998. In his post-playing career, he has become a mining executive with JDS Energy & Mining. In this conversation, we explore what it’s like to play in the NHL, and the habits that allowed him to have such a long playing career. We talk about the difference between good coaches and bad coaches. We also talk about how he transitioned from hockey to investing, and then venture capital and mining. Let’s get started. #ListenAndLearn Shane Parrish: Take me to the Stanley Cup final. You’re a professional hockey player at this point. This is before we get into mining and post- playing career. What is that like? Brent Gilchrist: I was fortunate enough to play in two Stanley Cup finals, and...fortunate and probably misled a little bit. My first year in the NHL I played with the Montreal Canadiens, and we had a great team. We finished second that year in the standings, and in 1989, we ended up playing the Calgary Flames in the Stanley Cup final. And we lost in six games, obviously really devastating, but as a 21-year-old kid, to play in a Stanley Cup final your first year.... And one story I remember—after we eliminated Philadelphia in the Spectrum in the conference final, I remember sitting next to Bob Gainey on the bus ride from the Spectrum to the airport.
