  • Big Walter Horton, Blues Harmonica Giant, Classic Sides 1951-1956 (3 CD) Di Bear Family, Uscito Nel 2010, Dopo La Stesura Di Questo Documento

  • Muddy Waters Began to Assemble What Appears to Be, in Retrospect, the Prototypical Rock Band
Playing at the blues bars o f Chicago’s South Side in the Forties, Muddy Waters began to assemble what appears to be, in retrospect, the prototypical rock band. Watersfound he couldn' t command much attention unamplified in a crowded, noisy club. So in 1944 he bought his first electric I guitar. As a vocalist, he developed a I raw and impassioned shouting style. His groups, which played with all amps cranked, consisted o f bass, drums, second guitar,2 piano and harmonica, with Waters on slide guitar and vocals. He and a shifting company o f stellar sidemen played hard-edged, unadulterated blues, but his bands had the earmarks—in size, volume and attitude—of rock combos to come. Waters also created some of rock! s classic cover material: ‘ ‘Hoochie Coochie Man,” “IJustWanttoMakeLovetoYou,” ‘‘Got My MoJo Working. ’ ’ In addition, he introduced Chuck Berry to the Chess brothers and inadvertently provided the Rolling Stones with their name (liftedfrom the title o f one o f his songs). McKinley was dubbed Muddy by his grandmother, who reared him on the Stovall Plantation, nearClarksdale, Mississippi; his playmates added Waters. At age ten, he taught himself to play the harmonica; at seventeen, he placed an order for hisfirst guitar with Sears and Roebuck. In 1941, folklorist Alan Lomax discovered Waters at the Stovall Plantation and recorded his solo work, which revealed the inspiration o f Delta bluesmen Robert Johnson and SonHouse. Inl943, Waters leftfor Chicago, a new homefor many ambitious Southerners, where the commingling o f country traditions and new MUDDY WATERS urban values was changing the shape o f the blues.

  • Notes from the Underground: a Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music
Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Stephen Graham Goldsmiths College, University of London PhD 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Signed: …………………………………………………. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption.

The Waterfront John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar); Eddie "Guitar" Burns (guitar). Listeners wanting to find a comprehensive collection of Hooker's work may not find it here, but they certainly won't be disappointed once the needle hits the grooves on this solid 1966 Chess release by the blues master. Featuring nine Hooker originals, the set is a fetching mix of raucously fun up-tempo cuts ("Let's Go Out Tonight") and starkly slow classics ("Stella Mae"). And in between, one can sample classics like "I'm in the Mood" and the incredible ballad closer, "The Waterfront." ---Stephen Cook, Rovi Some John Lee Hooker albums are hard on the ears. That is of course no fault of Mr. Hooker's but simply the recording quality. These are songs that Hooker recorded for the Chess label which sound great. Whether you've never heard John Lee Hooker or are a big fan, you really need this album. The reason is easily summed up in one word: singing. The man has such a mean howl. If Mr. Hooker's voice just dosen't grab you and squeeze your guts than it's possible 1 / 2 John Lee Hooker - The Real Folk Blues (1966) Written by bluesever Sunday, 11 July 2010 20:35 - Last Updated Thursday, 11 March 2021 17:31 your heartless.
