Her professionalism, hard work, and dedica- tion to the success of The American Papers has been remarkable. 5 The American Papers 6 Course Descriptions AMST 201: Introduction to American Studies With the concept of culture as a unifying principle, focus is on four separate time periods to provide the framework for an understanding of American civilization. Various kinds of documents used to illustrate the nature and advantages of an inter- disciplinary approach. AMST 300: Introduction to American Popular Culture A Historical exploration of popular culture in America as it both reflects and con- tributes to the search for meaning in everyday life. Heroes, myths of success, symbols of power, images of romance, consumerism, race and sexual identity. AMST 301: American Character Cultural environment and personality. Extent to which there have been and continue to be distinctly American patters of belief and behavior. Similarities, as well as class, ethnic, sex, and regional differences among Americans. AMST 401T: Adolescent America: A Cultural History and Contemporary Study of the Teenager in America This course examines the teenager as a category of cultural participation: the chal- lenges and conditions of adolescence in America, what has held “youth culture” together, what has fragmanted and reformulated it across time, with attention to broader beliefs and values. AMST 401T: American Culture through Ethnography In this interdisciplinary seminar students conduct independent research on aspects of contemporary American culture using ethnographic methods including interviews and participant-obervation. AMST 401T: Stories of Los Angeles Examines how people have told stories about Los Angeles. Los Angeles is repeatedly represented, fantasized, and forgotten, famously divided and sprawling, renowned for both sunshine and noir–and it is also the setting for most of our lives, so its contra- dictory stories are well worth exploring. AMST 408: Gaming in American Culture Explores the development and significance of outdoor, board, and video games in America. Analyzes literary works, films, television shows, advertisements, manuals, and material artifacts to understand how gaming has addressed larger social tensions and shaped American identity and culture. AMST 418: Food in American Culture Food and identities in America from the colonial era to the present, including ex- plorations of American ethnic food, industrialization of food and contemporary food movements. 7 The American Papers AMST 447: Race and American Popular Culture Explores American racial ideologies through the lens of popular culture. Examines literature, theater, sport, music and film, and asks: how has popular culture contrib- uted to and challenged the social construction of race and ethnicity in the United States? AMST 502: Race in American Studies Graduate seminar in American Studies that examines the theory of race as a prac- tice; one that is created, inhabited, transformed, and reimagined. The course pushes in-depth analysis of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of racial formation and interracial interactions in the United States. With an original endow- ment raised from the generous contributions of American Studies students and alumni, the Weaver Prize is an annual $250 cash award for the best paper written by an American Studies graduate student during the preceding year. Every spring, a panel of American Studies faculty reads submissions and selects the winning essay. The 2016 Weaver Prize went to Judson Barber for his essay “Silent Ruins: The Politics, Distribution, and Confinement of Memory Surrounding Alcatraz Island.” The In this original research project, Barber takes his readers on a journey to The Rock to experience the official version of the island’s history. Visitors hear the sounds of slamming cell bars and leave with jail-themed souvenirs, but few learn of the island’s hidden history that unfolded after the prison closed—the occupation of Alcatraz by the Indians of All Tribes from 1969 to 1971. Barber’s sophisticated analysis of sources ranging from postcards to protest graf- fiti firmly engages the slippery concept of public memory—a process that Barber describes as more of an “active disremembering than innocent forgetting.” The project is rigorously conceived and the paper beautifully written with solid argumentation from start to finish. The committee offers our heartfelt congratulations to Judson Barber for his inspiring work. -2016 Weaver Prize Committee 15 The American Papers 16 Silent Ruins: The Politics, Distribution, and Confinement of Memory Surrounding Alcatraz Island Judson Barber Introduction There is more than a presence, but evidence of an absence on Alcatraz. Throughout popular culture, public discourse, and narrative fiction, Alcatraz Island is known primarily for its use as a Federal Penitentiary which operated from 1934 to 1963. However, there are pieces of something else, some more and something different, that curiously emerge from the shadow of the looming cellhouse. A mark here, a mention there, and while sometimes conspicuous, the stage is never granted to these hints of alterity that inhabit the island. These glimmers, specters, and wisps are eager to shout and be seen, but their platform has been dismantled and their voices spoken over.     Mobile Food Vending and the Public Realm: A Seattle Study Jenny Ngo A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Urban Planning University of Washington 2012 Committee: Dennis Ryan Branden Born Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Urban Design and Planning University of Washington Abstract Mobile Food Vending and the Public Realm: A Seattle Study Jenny Ngo Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Dennis Ryan Urban Design and Planning Due to its position in the public realm, low public-investment costs and popularity among residents, mobile food vending presents a potentially effective means of improving streetscapes and amenities within a neighborhood. The flexible and adaptable nature of mobile food vending provides opportunities for increased vitality, walkability and pedestrian activity for the public realm. This research explores the design potential of mobile food vending two-fold: if mobile food vending is effective at contributing to Seattle’s design goals of an “attractive, vibrant and liveable city” and what qualities of vending make it effective at addressing these goals. The research used structured observational studies for 20 vending sites within Seattle and evaluated the ways in which mobile food vendors addressed these citywide goals through three site characteristics: public or private ownership of the property, the duration of the vending unit and distance from the sidewalk. Through these evaluations, this research has found great variability in the ability for mobile food vendors to address design criteria and issues of walkability based on these factors. The distance from the sidewalk was the most showed the most variability in these results, however locating on public or private property as well as a vendor’s duration has additional implications to how vendors affect the public realm.

This exploration is done because of great interest by the author and the lack of psychoanalytical analysis found connected to The Simpsons television show. The main aim is to show that these three characters, Homer Simpson, Marge Simpson and Ned Flanders, represent Freud‟s three parts of the psyche, the id, the ego and the superego, respectively. Other Freudian terms and ideas are also discussed. Those include: the reality principle, the pleasure principle, anxiety, repression and aggression. For this analysis English translations of Sigmund Freud‟s original texts and other written sources, including psychology textbooks, and a selection of The Simpsons episodes, are used. The character study is split into three chapters, one for each character. The first chapter, which is about Homer Simpson and his controlling id, his oral character, the Oedipus complex and his relationship with his parents, is the longest due to the subchapter on the relationship between him and Marge, the id and the ego. The second chapter is on Marge Simpson, her phobia, anxiety, aggression and repression. In the third and last chapter, Ned Flanders and his superego is studied, mainly through the religious aspect of the character.

The term drag king refers to any person, usually female, that is making a performance of masculinity using costume, makeup and gesture. Camp is defined as an ever-changing system of humor and queer parody that works to subvert hegemonic cultural structures in an effort to gain queer visibility. Drag king Camp is posited as a theatrical mechanism that works to reveal maleness and masculinity as a performative act, therefore destabilizing the gender binary, and simultaneously revealing alternative conceptions of femininity. Drag king performance will be theorized in five sections.

I situate this analysis in literature on the role of music and other cultural resources in the mobilization of social movement protest. Drawing from multiple sources of data, I demonstrate that drag queen performers make use of popular songs to build solidarity, evoke a sense of injustice, and enhance feelings of agency among audience members – three dimensions of cognition that constitute a collective action framework, conducive to social protest. The analysis is based on observations of drag performances; content analysis of the lyrics of drag songs; intensive interviews with drag queens at the 801 Cabaret in Key West, Florida; focus groups with audience members who attended the shows at the 801 Cabaret; and interviews with drag queen informants in Columbus, Ohio. I demonstrate how drag performers use music to construct new alliances and understandings of gender and sexuality among gay and heterosexual members of the audience. The data illustrate that drag performers strategically select songs to evoke an array of emotions among audience members. First are songs that utilize sympathy, sorrow, and humor to build solidarity.

National and local media picked at the story after the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors passed new regulations, which promised to severely restrict food trucks, referred to as "loncheros"or "taco trucks," in East Los Angeles.2 The authorities and business interests supporting the restrictions argued that the food trucks were a cumbersome and unsightly form of vending. On the opposite side, loncheros, foodies, and those looking for cheap meals viewed the restrictions as a full-frontal attack on local Los Angeles, the food scene, and Mexican food cultures.' Culinary resistance and enforcement of the new restrictions resulted in taco truck litigation.

    GOURMET FOOD TRUCKS: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC EXAMINATION OF ORLANDO’S FOOD TRUCK SCENE by ZACHARY ARLO HAWK B.A. University of Central Florida 2008 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Sciences at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Fall Term 2013 Major Professor: Ty Matejowsky © 2013 Zachary Arlo Hawk ii ABSTRACT Gourmet food trucks have emerged as increasingly popular dining alternatives for consumers in today’s urban landscape. Existing literature, as well as my own ethnographic research within Orlando, Florida’s mobile food vending scene, reveals that food truck owner/operators utilize various strategies to establish a viable niche for themselves in this diversified and burgeoning market. Among other things, these strategies include online social networking, creating and maintaining a recognizable brand identity, collaborating with local retailers and bar owners, and incorporating organic and locally produced ingredients in their dishes whenever possible. As in other parts of the country, there appears to be a growing concern in greater Orlando about local diets and the profound and subtle messages it conveys about contemporary eating habits. I contend that dining at gourmet food trucks represents a legitimate declaration of consumer identity about individual beliefs and values.
