DIXFIELD HISTORY (Written by Mrs. Ada Murch Smith) Location Dixfield is situated on the north side of the Androscoggin River, between this and the northeastern border of Oxford County. The length of the town, east west, is about seven miles; north and south, five miles. The surface is uneven, especially northwest of the center, where 3 large hills stand in a line, of which the southwestern one, consisting of two peaks known as the "Sugar Loaves", is the highest. Near the Androscoggin, a little west of the middle of the town is a little hill called "The Bluff." in the southeastern part of the town is a group of three mountains in a triangular position, of which the highest are, Burnt Mountain and Aunt Hepsy Brown's Mountain. Webb River forms the boundary line between this town and Mexico on the west. Newton Brook comes down from the north across the middle of the town, to the Androscoggin; and the Seven Mile Brook crosses the northeastern corner.

  • Atlantic Salmon EFH the Proposed EFH Designation for Atlantic Salmon
Atlantic salmon EFH The proposed EFH designation for Atlantic salmon includes the rivers, estuaries, and bays that are listed in Table 31 and shown in Map 105, which exhibit the environmental conditions defined in the text descriptions. Smaller tributaries not shown on the map are also EFH for one or more life stage as long as they conform to the proposed habitat descriptions. All EFH river systems form a direct connection to the sea, but EFH would not include portions of rivers above naturally occurring barriers to upstream migration or land-locked lakes and ponds. The oceanic component of EFH is to a distance of three miles from the mouth of each river. The new designation includes six new drainage systems not included in the original list of 26 rivers that were designated in 1998. All of them are in the Maine coastal sub-region (Chandler, Indian, Pleasant, St. George, Medomak, and Pemaquid rivers). All told, 30 river systems in nine New England sub-regions are designated for Atlantic salmon EFH. The new map includes a more continuous series of bays and areas adjacent to river mouths that are within three miles of the coast. Designated EFH in Long Island Sound has been reduced to small areas where the Connecticut and Pawcatuck Rivers empty into the sound, rather than taking up the entire sound. Also, there are a number of improvements in the text descriptions which make the habitat requirements for each life stage more specific and applicable to three separate juvenile life stages (fry, parr, and smolts). Text descriptions: Essential fish habitat for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is designated as the rivers, estuaries, and bays that are listed in Table 31 and shown in Map 105.

Weld, Maine (7½’) Fishes Landlocked salmon Blacknose dace Brown trout Creek chub Brook trout Fallfish (chub) Rainbow smelt Pearl dace Smallmouth bass White sucker White perch Hornpout (bullhead) Yellow perch Redbreast sunfish Chain pickerel Pumpkinseed sunfish Minnows Slimy sculpin Golden shiner American eel Common shiner Physical Characteristics Area - 2146 acres Temperatures: Surface - 79°F Maximum depth - 42 feet 40 feet - 60°F Principal fisheries: Brown trout, smallmouth bass, white perch, chain pickerel Webb Lake is located west of Mount Blue. Many small inlets enter all sides of the lake. Its outlet, the Webb River, flows south into the Androscoggin River. The lake’s shoreline is largely developed. Water quality in Webb Lake is marginal for coldwater gamefish. Good spawning and nursery habitats for salmonids are available in the tributaries, but temperature and dissolved oxygen content of the lake reach critical levels in the warm summer months. Numerous warmwater species compete with salmon and trout for food and space. The lake is stocked annually with brown trout to supplement a small wild population and provide a coldwater fishery. Webb Lake is accessible via a boat launch site located on the west shore in Mount Blue State Park. The lake is open to fishing in both the summer and winter seasons.
