Derek R. Brown ii ABSTRACT This thesis aims to elucidate the nature of the references to Satan in the undisputed Pauline corpus. Although scholarship has frequently devoted attention to the various “powers of evil” in Paul’s letters—including principalities, rulers, demons, etc.—insufficient consideration has been given to the figure of Satan as an isolated subject matter. Moreover, scholarship on the individual references to Satan has often neglected Paul’s depiction of Satan’s activity vis-à-vis his apostolic calling. This raises the question, how and why does the Apostle Paul refer to the figure of Satan in his letters? In order to address this question, the thesis commences by examining two key areas of background material. First, Chapter Two investigates the various “images” of Satan in the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Jewish texts. Instead of delineating a historical sketch of the development of Satan in Jewish thought, emphasis is placed on the various roles in which Satan functions within these writings. Second, Chapters Two and Three investigate two aspects of Paul’s theology which relate to his references to Satan. First, Satan’s place within Paul’s apocalyptic theology is explicated (Chapter Three). Second, the thesis considers Paul’s self-understanding as the Apostle to the Gentiles and, critically, the importance of Paul’s churches for his apostleship (Chapter Four). Chapters Five and Six then utilize the findings of the previous chapters in their examination of the ten clear references to Satan in the undisputed Pauline letters. Chapter Five focuses on the sole reference to Satan in Romans (16:20) and the two references in 1 Thessalonians (2:18; 3:5). Chapter Six then analyzes the several references to Satan in the Corinthian correspondence (1 Cor 5:5; 7:5; 2 Cor 2:11; 4:4; 6:15; 11:14; 12:7), including their collective significance. On the basis of the examination of the Pauline references to Satan, it is argued that Paul—while sharing the Jewish and early Christian understanding of Satan as an enemy and tempter of the people of God—fundamentally characterizes Satan in his letters as the apocalyptic adversary who opposes his apostolic labor (kopos). Paul iii does so, it is argued, because he believed that his apostleship was pivotal in spreading the gospel at a crucial point in salvation history.     The Devil’s in the Details: A Comprehensive Look at the Salem Witch Mania of 1692 __________ Ashley Layhew Nine-year-old Betty Parris began to convulse, seize, and scream gibber- ish in the winter of 1692. The doctor pronounced her bewitched when he could find no medical reason for her actions. Five other girls began ex- hibiting the same symptoms: auditory and visual hallucinations, fevers, nausea, diarrhea, epileptic fits, screaming, complaints of being bitten, poked, pinched, and slapped, as well as coma-like states and catatonic states. Beseeching their Creator to ease the suffering of the “afflicted,” the Puritans of Salem Village held a day of fasting and prayer. A relative of Betty’s father, Samuel Parris, suggested a folk cure, in which the urine of the afflicted girls was taken and made into a cake. The villagers fed the cake to a dog, as dogs were believed to be the evil helpers of witches. This did not work, however, and the girls were pressed to name the peo- ple who were hurting them.1 The girls accused Tituba, a Caribbean slave who worked in the home of Parris, of being the culprit. They also accused two other women: Sarah Good and Sarah Osbourne. The girls, all between the ages of nine and sixteen, began to accuse their neighbors of bewitching them, saying that three women came to them and used their “spectres” to hurt them. The girls would scream, cry, and mimic the behaviors of the accused when they had to face them in court. They named many more over the course of the next eight months; the “bewitched” youth accused a total of one hundred and forty four individuals of being witches, with thirty sev- en of those executed following a trial.

Although this infamous treatise served as the official chronicle and apologia of the 1692 witch trials, and excerpts from Wonders of the Invisible World are widely anthologized, no annotated critical edition of the entire work has appeared since the nineteenth century. This present edition seeks to remedy this lacuna in modern scholarship, presenting Mather’s seventeenth-century text next to an integrated theory of the natural causes of the Salem witch panic. As I will show, Puritan ministers and lawmakers transformed the Devil into a character with increased power and agency during the period of the Sale Witch Trials. This transformation is revealed in the writings of these six Puritan ministers during the era of the witchcraft trials, when concerns about Satan’s activity reached fever pitch. The amorphous, undefined characterization of the Devil in the Bible allowed these ministers to perceive Satan in a variety of roles, including that of independent agent or provocateur. Much of the secondary material on the witch trials regards actual explanations about why they occurred and why they were so severe and numerous in Salem. This project diverges from existing scholarship in that I am not looking to explain about why the Salem witch trials they occurred or why they were so severe and numerous. My work moves in a different direction, examining how Puritan ministers thought about Satan as a critical element of the events. Focusing on their beliefs about Satan, his agency, and his potential power will give a new perspective on the events of the Salem Witch Trials, as well as on Puritan society in the late seventeenth century.

In this article, I argue that late twentieth-century satanic ritual abuse discourse helped perpetuate intolerance toward non-Christian religions and foreclose conditions of possibility for benign religious difference in the United States. Psychological diagnoses related to satanic ritual abuse fueled popular anxieties regarding the sexual peril of American minority religions. Perpetuating diagnoses of satanic ritual abuse reinforced popular suspicions that religious minorities are dangerous, particularly when it comes to matters of sexuality. Among them was the catechumen, Vibia Perpetua, a recently married twenty-two year old woman with a child at her breast. The Passion of Perpetua tells the story of her and her companions’ martyrdom. The bulk of the central section of this martyr act purports to come from Perpetua’s prison diary, in which she describes four visions.1 Her fourth vision occurred the day before her execution.2 In this vision she sees herself in the amphitheatre about to face a vicious Egyptian in hand-to-hand combat, an opponent who surprises her since she knew she was condemned ad bestias. Not only does he have incredibly few lines, A but he can’t even be called noteworthy for having the fewest, as Fleance beats Seyton’s thirty-two words with an even more meager fifteen.1 Yet unlike Fleance who is noteworthy for, at the very least, being Banquo’s son, Seyton appears to be of such inconsequence that we may even question why he has a name at all. He does play a slightly more relevant role in the play than an average servant, but even the unnamed Doctor who appears in scene 5.3 with him has more to say, speaking fifty-one words in that scene, plus 226 in 5.1 earlier. And the information the Doctor gives is much more unique to his position, as he discusses in specific terms Lady Macbeth’s madness, and how she may be cared for. Seyton’s one purpose in the whole play seems to be to deliver to Macbeth the news of his wife’s death, yet given his inconsequentiality, it almost seems it would have made more sense to give the Doctor a name and have him deliver that bombshell— cutting Seyton entirely. Edwards-Thro 1 One possible translation of this project’s title is “this is not a single story.” In addition to myself, eleven Haitian and Haitian-American authors contributed words to this work in the form of short Afrofuturist fiction stories that they wrote and edited over the course of six months. The process began with two weekend workshops, one in Miami and the other in Port-au-Prince, in which we gathered to discuss genre, view movie clips, and review readings. While they went on to write their pieces as individuals, writers continued to collaborate by commenting on each other’s rough drafts and reviewing each other’s submissions as a committee. We kept in touch with one another through a groupchat, Facebook group, and email, and I was able to visit Port- au-Prince a second time to meet in person with some of the writers for a final review of the project stories.
