Have fun and be musical! Music Choice Boards Information Music class will be a recorded lesson in Google classroom that students can view at any time. Students are encouraged to watch and participate to the best of their ability. In addition to watching the videos and participating, students will be given Choice Boards that they may select 2 activities of their choice to complete for the quarter. You can type your answers, take a picture, or send a video of yourself completing the activity to your music teacher. The first choice activity is due December 18. The second choice activity is due January 29. Any questions, please reach out to your music teacher. Using only mathematical shapes, you will create your own electric guitar. Make it as colorful as possible! Once you have designed and decorated your instrument, take a picture and email your picture to your music teacher. Happy Designing! Choice Board #2: Shakers and Maracas You will make a shaker/maraca: Supplies: Use the tube (inside cardboard cylinder) of paper towels or toilet paper rolls, a material to place in tube to create a “shaker” sound ( ex. Seeds, oatmeal, coins, paperclips) Seal one end with aluminum foil, plastic wrap, or tape, and then put a few seeds or paperclips (anything small that you move easily) in the tube. Seal the other end with foil, plastic wrap, or tape. You can attach a handle to make a maraca Make 2 different ones and use a different material in each tube. Decorate your shaker or Maraca (share something about you through your design). Compare and contrast the difference in sounds (seeds compared to paper clips compared to oatmeal) then write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the different sounds each material makes. You can also record yourself comparing the two different instruments made. Choice Board #3: Xylophone Water Jars Musical instruments are so much fun to make! This sound activity will show you how varying levels of water in containers change the pitch (high and low sounds) of the sound created. Supplies needed: 1) At least four empty and clean glass containers 2) Water 3) Something made of metal or wood to strike the water xylophone with to produce a sound (mallet) How to make your Water Xylophone: With an adult’s supervision, fill each glass container with different amounts of water Using your “mallet” tap the outside of each jar. What sounds are being made? Which jars have the lowest pitch? Which jars have the highest pitch? Why do you think some jars produce a lower sound, while others produce a higher sound? Play around with the water levels in each jar to experiment with pitch. Once your instrument is completed, answer the questions above and either write them down to email, or record yourself demonstrating your instrument and discussing how pitch works. Choice Board #4: You’ve Got Talent! FOX is looking for a new music television show and they heard YOU have an amazing idea! A show that is completely different than any other music show on television. You are going to pitch your idea to the executives at Fox for your big break! Your music television pitch should include: 1) The name of your show 2) How it is different than all other music shows on television (currently or in the past) 3) How auditions will be held 4) What the final prize will be 5) What will keep audiences engaged and coming back for more 6) Why your show is the next big idea 7) Create a jingle/theme music for the show’s opening Submit your completed work to your music teacher. Choice Board #5: Futuristic Instruments In this activity, you will read about, listen to, and see the following 5 futuristic instruments in action: Zeusaphone, Reactable, Eigenharp, Lazer Harp, and, the Holophone. Futuristic Instruments Once you have seen and heard the instruments in action, create your own futuristic instrument. You will design your instrument (you can draw it, or create an instrument with various items you find). Describe how it will be played, what it will sound like, and how much money it will cost to build. Please submit your completed work to your music teacher. Choice Board #6: The Art of Conducting Watch the following video on what a conductor does: Conducting Watch the following conductors of Symphony Orchestras: John Adams: Short Ride in a Fast Machine John Legend: All of Me (Choral) Beethoven's 9th (Orchestra and Chorus) When you have watched the above videos, tell me in your own words what a conductor does? Does it look like an easy or hard job? Why do you think each conductor looked different in their conducting styles? Now try conducting yourself: You are a conductor! Once you have practiced conducting, record yourself conducting and submit it to your music teacher, along with the above questions. Choice Board #7: World Instruments Word Search Fun You are creating three world instrument word searches. INSTRUCTIONS: Pick three regions/continents from around the world. (Ex. Asia , South America, etc) Research the types of traditional musical instruments found in each region and pick 12 from each region for your word search lists. (Ex. Asia - Gong) Sort the instruments on your lists using the following categories: 4 Stringed instruments 4 Woodwind instruments 4 Metal/Brass Instruments 4 Percussion Instruments Create a word search for each of the three lists of instruments you selected. Ex. Asian Instruments Word Search, South American Instruments Word Search You may create your word searches on paper or use a word search template on the computer to complete your project. Choice Board #8: Exploring Cultures Cultures across the world celebrate traditions and history with music in their own unique ways. Select 2 cultures from anywhere in the world, and research the musical traditions of each. Please answer the following: What rhythms and instruments are primarily used? How is the genre of music classified? How is music valued? How do they learn music? How are musical traditions passed on? Submit your completed work to your music teacher. Choice Board #9: Instrument Geography Select one ethnic region, or country, from any place in the world. Research the natural resources of the region. How would such natural resources help create musical instruments in their material, sound, and design? How do the people of the region learn to play the instruments? How important is music in their culture? Next, create or draw your own new instrument design using the same resources from your chosen region.

  • California Noise: Tinkering with Hardcore and Heavy Metal in Southern California Steve Waksman
ABSTRACT Tinkering has long figured prominently in the history of the electric guitar. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, two guitarists based in the burgeoning Southern California hard rock scene adapted technological tinkering to their musical endeavors. Edward Van Halen, lead guitarist for Van Halen, became the most celebrated rock guitar virtuoso of the 1980s, but was just as noted amongst guitar aficionados for his tinkering with the electric guitar, designing his own instruments out of the remains of guitars that he had dismembered in his own workshop. Greg Ginn, guitarist for Black Flag, ran his own amateur radio supply shop before forming the band, and named his noted independent record label, SST, after the solid state transistors that he used in his own tinkering. This paper explores the ways in which music-based tinkering played a part in the construction of virtuosity around the figure of Van Halen, and the definition of artistic ‘independence’ for the more confrontational Black Flag. It further posits that tinkering in popular music cuts across musical genres, and joins music to broader cultural currents around technology, such as technological enthusiasm, the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethos, and the use of technology for the purposes of fortifying masculinity. Keywords do-it-yourself, electric guitar, masculinity, popular music, technology, sound California Noise: Tinkering with Hardcore and Heavy Metal in Southern California Steve Waksman Tinkering has long been a part of the history of the electric guitar. Indeed, much of the work of electric guitar design, from refinements in body shape to alterations in electronics, could be loosely classified as tinkering.

This National Science Foundation STEM Guitar Project provides innovative professional development to high school and community college faculty in collaborative design and rapid manufacturing. Faculty teams take part in an intense five day guitar design/build project. Each faculty member builds his/her own custom electric guitar and will engage in student centered learning activities that relate the guitar design to specific math, science and engineering topics. Participants leave this weeklong experience with their custom‐made guitars, curriculum modules that can be immediately integrated into the faculty teams school curriculum, and much more. Morning classroom sessions include the following: • STEM Learning Activities in the following disciplines: Physical Science, Math, Engineering, CADD, CNC, RPT, Reverse Engineering, etc.
