The present geological period has more species than any other, yet the current rate of extinction of species is greater now than at any time in the past. Ecosystems and communities are being degraded and destroyed, and species are being driven to extinction. The species that persist are losing genetic variation as the number of individuals in populations shrinks, unique populations and subspecies are destroyed, and remaining populations become increasingly isolated from one another. The cause of this loss of biological diversity at all levels is the range of human activity that alters and destroys natural habitats to suit human needs.” (Primack, 2002). CapeNature launched its State of Biodiversity Programme (SoBP) to assess and monitor the state of biodiversity in the Western Cape in 1999. This programme delivered its first report in 2002 and these reports are updated every five years. The current report (2007) reports on the changes to the state of vertebrate biodiversity and land under conservation usage. -

The potential importance of these predators in soil ecology partly rests on whether they occur in high densities, but their abundance has rarely been measured, and there are no standard methods. The mostly tropical and fossorial caecilians (Amphibia: Gymnophiona) are often considered rare, but there are very few quantitative data, and some species, including Gegeneophis ramaswamii,have been reported as abundant in some situations. Using simple and repeatable survey methods with randomised 1 m2 quadrats, surveys of G. ramaswamii were conducted at five localities in southern India. Densities of 0–1.87 m−2 per survey were measured, with means of 0.51 and 0.63 m−2 at the beginning and middle of monsoon, respectively. These densities were far greater than for sympatric caecilians (ichthyophiids; uraeotyphlids) and fossorial snakes (typhlopids; colubrids). While ecological data remain very scant, establishing quantitative methods to assess the abundance of endogeic limbless vertebrates is an important step toward greater understanding of subterranean predator–prey relations, and of monitoring populations of these poorly known organisms. -

December 2019 Copyright © 2019 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved II Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract This study investigates the phylogeographic structure of three co-distributed forest-living reptile species, the Pondo flat gecko (Afroedura pondolia), the forest thread snake (Leptotyphlops sylvicolus) and the Natal black snake (Macrelaps microlepidotus), by sampling specimens from the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces of South Africa. Phylogenetic results, using Bayesian inferences and maximum likelihood, from the combined mitochondrial sequence data (ND4 and cyt b), along with population genetic analyses suggest the presence of broadly congruent biogeographic breaks among the study taxa. Sequence divergence values suggest that A. pondolia and L. sylvicolus represent species complexes comprising several cryptic species while M. microlepidotus exhibits population level differentiation. Divergence-time estimates indicate that cladogenesis within the study taxa occurred during the late Miocene to the Plio/Pleistocene climatic shifts, suggesting that cladogenesis was driven by climatic oscillations and suitable habitat fragmentation. -

The Leptotyphlopidae, descriptively called threadsnakes or wormsnakes, is one of five families comprising the most ancient but highly specialized clade of snakes, the Scolecophidia, which dates back to the Jurassic Period (ca. 155 mya). Scolecophidians are the least studied and poorest known group of snakes, both biologically and taxonomically. Due to their subterranean habitat, nocturnal lifestyle, small size, and drab coloration, these snake are extremely difficult to find and seldom are observed or collected. Epictia is one of six genera found in the New World, with a distribution extending throughout Latin America. Whereas most Epictia are uniform brown or black, some species are brightly colored. Epictia tenella, the most wide-ranging member of the genus, occurs throughout much of northern South America. Pictured here is an individual from Trinidad that exhibits several distinctive features, including yellow zigzag stripes, relatively large bulging eyes, contact of the supraocular and anterior supralabial shields, and the presence of numerous sensory pits on the anterior head shields. Editor in charge: Uwe Fritz Abstract Recent advances in the phylogenetic relationships of snakes using both molecular and morphological data have generally demonstrated a close relationship between boas and pythons but also induced nomenclatural changes that rob the least inclusive clade to which both belong of a name. This name would be tremendously useful, because it is the least inclusive group to which a large number of fossil boa-like or python-like taxa can be assigned. Accordingly, an update of higher-level nomenclature is desirable. We herein provide an overview of all the names that have historically been applied to boas and pythons. We show that the earliest name for the supra-familial group encompass- ing boas and pythons is Constrictores Oppel, 1811.
