H. Res. 490 In the House of Representatives, U. S., July 30, 2007. Whereas on June 14, 2007, the San Antonio Spurs won the 2007 National Basketball Association (NBA) Champion- ship with a victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers; Whereas the Spurs’ win results in their fourth NBA Cham- pionship in the last 9 years; Whereas the Spurs, after sweeping the Cavaliers to decisively win the Finals 4–0, are widely recognized as a modern- day basketball dynasty; Whereas San Antonio’s four-game sweep was only the eighth sweep since the finals began in 1947; Whereas the Spurs’ .727 winning percentage is the highest in finals history; Whereas under the leadership and instruction of Coach Gregg Popovich, the Spurs’ Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Robert Horry, Bruce Bowen, Michael Finley, Fabricio Oberto, Francisco Elson, Jacque Vaughn, and Brent Barry played together as a team with determina- tion and resolve to bring the NBA trophy back home to the Alamo City; Whereas Tony Parker was named the Finals Most Valuable Player after using his speed and quickness to average 24.5 points and an amazing 57 percent from the field 2 during the Finals, becoming the first European-born player to be honored as MVP; Whereas Tim Duncan and Bruce Bowen anchored the Spurs with stifling defense throughout the NBA Finals; Whereas Manu Ginobili used his pinpoint three-point shoot- ing and strong drives to the basket to lead the Spurs to victory in Game 4 with 27 points; Whereas Coach Gregg Popovich is recognized as one of the greatest coaches of all time after winning his fourth NBA Championship; and Whereas San Antonio has the best fans in the league and the Alamo City is the perfect setting for a championship cele- bration: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives congratu- lates the San Antonio Spurs and Coach Gregg Popovich for winning the 2007 National Basketball Association Champion- ship. Johnny Moore played a total of 10 years in the NBA, all of which were with the San Antonio Spurs. When he finished his NBA career, he was the all- time assist leader in Spurs history, handing out 3,865 assists while appearing in 519 games. He averaged 9.4 points, 7.4 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game. Johnny’s best season was during the 1984-1985 NBA season, where he averaged 12.8 points, 10 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 2.79 steals in 82 games. Johnny Moore had his number (00) retired by the San Antonio Spurs, joining an elite group of former players including Avery Johnson, Bruce Bowen, David Robinson, George Gervin, James Silas and Sean Elliott. Johnny played four seasons at the University of Texas, and was twice named to the All-Southwest Conference First Team. He led the SWC in assists during two different seasons, and holds the record for the most assists in a single game by a SWC player. During the 1978-79 season, he handed out 19 assists in two different games. In his junior year, Texas won the NIT and Johnny was named the tournament MVP. Johnny has been dedicated to serving youth and improving the San Antonio community, since joining the San Antonio Spurs Community Relations team in 1993.

This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.

LJWorld.com Lawrence orthopedic surgeon recalls 27 years of service to KU athletes Care given to athletes on voluntary basis make Ken Wertzberger a team MVP Kevin Anderson Dr. Ken Wertzberger, a Lawrence orthopedic surgeon, recalls working with Kansas University student athletes for 27 years during a 2010 interview. He was honored last year with the bronze Jayhawk statue by the KU Athletics Department. Recently, he decided to leave OrthoKansas after 32 years and start his own practice in Lawrence. Enlarge photo March 18, 2010 Ken Wertzberger describes his ties with Kansas University athletics as a special privilege. He grew up a couple of blocks from KU’s campus and fondly remembers accompanying his father to watch “Wilt the Stilt” Chamberlain in Allen Fieldhouse. In grade school, he was a member of the KU Football Fan club. He and other students would sit in the bowl of the football stadium. They had badges with their names on them and they got to watch a season of football games for $5. “I remember going to all of those games, and since my brother (John) played, sometimes I would go down to the locker room and get a signature or something,” he said. He followed in his brother’s footsteps and played on the 1968 team that went to the Orange Bowl. Wertzberger graduated from KU’s School of Medicine in 1973, and six years later, the orthopedic surgeon returned to Lawrence to practice with his brother. He also returned to his alma mater. For 27 years, he voluntarily took care of KU athletes, including basketball greats Danny Manning, Archie Marshall, Calvin Rayford, Mark Randall, Greg Ostertag, Jacque Vaughn, Scot Pollard, Paul Pierce, Raef LaFrentz and Nick Collison.

With 7 foreign-born players, the Spurs led the NBA with the most foreign-born players on their roster. Tony Parker (France), Boris Diaw (France) and Manu Ginobili (Argentina) played alongside Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kawhi Leonard (U.S.) to bring the team its 5th NBA championship since 1999. The San Antonio Spurs are part of a larger trend of globalization in the NBA. In the 2013-14 season, the National Basketball Association (NBA) set a record with 90 international players, representing 20 percent of the players on the opening-night NBA rosters, compared to 21 international players (and 5 percent of rosters) in 1992. Professional baseball started blending foreign-born players with native-born talent earlier than the NBA.
