50 WASHINGTON HUSKY F O O T B A L L 2 0 0 8 The Washington football emerged from spring practice in relatively good shape . The spring gave the team a chance to look at new players in the areas in which the team lacks experiences and to solidify those units made up largely of veterans . While the infusion of new talent that the freshman class will bring could change things at any number of positions, here’s a unit-by-unit breakdown as the Huskies enter the 2008 season:

OFFENSE The offense will center on a veteran corps of linemen and returning Jake Locker . In the meantime, a talented group of tailbacks will look to fill a void left by Louis Rankin, who rushed for 1,294 yards and started every game last year, while an even younger group of wide receivers will try to replace five departed seniors at that position .

The offense will also feature two of the three assistant coaches new to the Husky staff . Brian White, most recently offensive coordinator at Syracuse, will coach the tight ends (and also handle special teams coordination) and Steve Gervais, who concluded his high-school coaching tenure with his sixth career Washington state title last season at nearby Skyline High, takes over coaching the running backs .

QUARTERBACKS Locker was a sensation during his redshirt freshman season of 2007 . He rushed for 986 yards to set a new school and Pac-10 record for rushing by a quarterback . He also passed for 2,062 yards and 14 scores to go with his 13 rushing . jake LOCKER It’s no surprise that the Huskies will rely on his arm and his legs as a centerpiece of their offense, especially with very little experienced personnel at the other offensive skill positions .

The top backup to Locker is , who spent his freshman season as the Huskies’ No . 3 (and briefly No . 2) quarterback, making all the trips and suiting up for every game . He didn’t see any game action, but enters the season as the clear backup .

Also on the field in spring was Taylor Bean, a walkon who also redshirted his fresh- man season in 2007 . He’ll compete with two incoming freshmen in the fall .

RUNNING BACKS With Rankin gone, the inside track on the starting tailback spot logically falls to sophomore Brandon Johnson, who was Rankin’s backup last year and is the most experienced tailback on the roster . Johnson showed a convincing flash of what he’s capable of when he ran for 121 yards on 23 carries last season vs . California .

Two other tailbacks who redshirted the 2007 season will be given every chance to fight for playing time, those being Willie Griffin and Brandon Yakaboski . Those two emerged from the spring as the backups behind Johnson

At fullback, the Huskies are considerably more experienced . Paul Homer and Luke Kravitz handled all of the fullback duties a year ago with Homer serving as the starter and in more of a blocking role and Kravitz in more of a running role . At times, they played in the same backfield . Also returning is sophomore Austin Sylvester, who spent time as a linebacker and fullback as a freshman in 2007 .

WIDE RECEIVERS Washington lost its top five wide receivers (in terms of 2007 receptions) off of last year’s team, all to graduation . Only two players with a college reception return at the paul position . HOMER D’Andre Goodwin saw his first action as a redshirt freshman last fall . He caught six passes and also had four carries . Curtis Shaw, a true freshman in 2007, began the season as a tailback, but moved to receiver late last season . In his first game at his new position, he gave a preview of what he can do, catching four passes for 46 yards at Oregon State .

Other returners include Alvin Logan, who redshirted as a freshman last fall, but came out of spring as a probable starter, Charles Hawkins Jr ., a former walkon who was put on scholarship last season, and Tony Chidiac . Both Hawkins and Chidiac played in 2007, but both are still looking for their first reception .

Three newcomers enrolled at the UW in January who add to the group at receiver . Anthony Boyles and Devin Aguilar were both heralded recruits who originally signed as a part of last fall’s freshman class, but didn’t enroll until after the season (and will thereby enter the fall of 2008 with five years to play four) . Another newcomer is

51 Chris Polk, who graduated from high school early to enroll at the UW . One of the most highly rated players in his class, he emerged from spring ball as a starter at slotback .

TIGHT ENDS Last season, three veteran tight ends shared the position for much of the season . One of those three veterans return in 2008, along with another senior and a redshirt freshman .

Fifth-year senior Michael Gottlieb is the Huskies’ most experienced tight end . Gottlieb caught 12 passes last season, most among tight ends and fifth on the team . Fellow senior Walt Winter also adds to the depth at the position after having spent time dur- ing his UW career at tight end and also on defense .

Redshirt freshman Chris Izbicki, rated as one of the nation’s top prep tight ends in his high school days, and classmate Romeo Savant add to the mix and will contend with their elder teammates for action at the position .

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN The Huskies’ offensive line lost only one player who saw significant game action dur- ing the 2007 season in the form of two-year starting right tackle Chad Macklin .

However, the other four-fifths of the line returns as six different players who started at the other four spots return in 2008 . juan GARCIA The unquestioned leader of the line is center Juan Garcia, who has started every game there the last two seasons . However, Garcia suffered a foot injury during spring ball and his availability for the fall is up in the air . Garcia opted to return after the NCAA granted him a sixth year of eligibility . Matt Sedillo took over the starting spot at center after Garcia’s injury, with Gregory Christine behind him .

On either side of center are two returning starters, right guard Casey Bulyca and left guard Ryan Tolar . Both spent the vast majority of last season starting in those respec- tive spots . When they didn’t start, senior Jordan White-Frisbee filled in . He’s also back and will fight with Tolar to start at left guard .

At the left tackle spot, Ben Ossai (who started all but one game in 2006) and Cody Habben split time last season at left tackle . Both are back for next season with more than a year of eligibility remaining . Ossai will stay at left tackle while Habben will take over for Macklin on the right side .

With six players with starting experience returning, competition among the remaining offensive linemen should be fierce . The most experienced of that group is Morgan Rosborough, who has seen time at guard and tackle . Additionally, three offensive linemen redshirted their true freshman seasons in 2007 and will be ready to roll in 2008: Mark Armelin, Skyler Fancher and Scott Shugert .

DEFENSE Six of the top seven tacklers on the 2007 Husky defense return for 2008 . But, that stat obscures the fact that there is work to do in terms of replacing significant losses . While numerous experienced linebackers and defensive backs return, only one of the four starters on the defensive line is back for 2008 .

The defense will also presumably have a new look as it will have a new coordinator in Ed Donatell . Most recently defensive coordinator for the in 2006, one of Donatell’s first coaching jobs was as a grad assistant at the UW under Don James in the early 1980s . He joined the staff in January and began to form his new Husky defense in spring ball .

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN What had been the Huskies’ most experienced unit in each of the last two seasons is, suddenly but not surprisingly, its least experienced .

The one returning starter is end Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, the Huskies’ most prolific line- man last season with 57 total tackles . He also led the team in tackles for loss (15 .0) and sacks (8 .5) . He’ll be relied upon to lead a young crew .

The next most experienced d-lineman is tackle Cameron Elisara, who played in 12 of 13 last season and was a regular in the rotation . Also back, and with game experience, are tackle De’Shon Matthews and end Darrion Jones, who emerged from the spring as probable starters alongside Elisara and Te’o-Nesheim . Also, Johnie daniel Kirton, an experienced senior with plenty of past playing time at tight end, moved to te’o-nesheim defensive tackle during the spring and will compete for time there along with senior Jovon O’Connor .

52 WASHINGTON HUSKY F O O T B A L L 2 0 0 8 The door is open for a group of young defensive linemen who redshirted last season . Kalani Aldrich, Tyrone Duncan and Nick Wood, as well as walkons Conrad Remington and Pete Galbraith, will compete with a freshman class that is particularly heavy with defensive line talent .

LINEBACKERS Only one member of the regular rotation of linebackers in 2007 – graduated senior Dan Howell – doesn’t return for 2008 . The list of players who are back is long and varied .

E J. . Savannah was the Huskies’ leading tackler last season, with 111 stops from his starting weakside linebacker spot . Donald Butler notched 52 tackles splitting time as a starter in the middle with Trenton Tuiasosopo, who contributed 39 stops last year . Also back is true sophomore Mason Foster, who picked up a couple of starts as a true freshman last year .

Senior Chris Stevens has played outside linebacker and has been a special teams star during his UW career . He also returns as does a list of younger, but game-experienced players at the position: Joshua Gage, Matt Houston, T .J . Poe and Fred Wiggs .

Butler and Tuiaosopo will contend for the starting spot in the middle while Foster and Gage came out of the spring atop the depth at the two OLB positions .

Cort Dennison, who earned considerable praise on the UW scout teams as a true freshman last year, will look to impress in the spring as will walkon Brandon Huppert . True freshman Kurt Mangum enrolled in time to participate fully in spring practice .

donald DEFENSIVE BACKS BUTLER The Husky secondary would certainly be categorized as an experienced group, but there are some caveats to that . The Huskies lost three-year starting cornerback Roy Lewis to graduation . Additionally, veteran free safety Jason Wells, who missed much of last season due to injury, wasn’t available to practice in the spring, but should be ready for the fall .

Still, there’s plenty of talent and experience at all of the four secondary spots .

Senior Mesphin Forrester, who started every game at safety last season, switched to cornerback in the spring and could start there when the season begins . He finishied last season with 93 total tackles, third on the team . After Wells went down, Darin Har- ris’ previously injury-plagued career was revitalized . He was fourth on the squad with 73 tackles and will contend to start at strong safety .

At free safety, a healthy Wells will find himself in competition with sophomore Nate Williams, who played as much as any freshman last year, appearing regularly in the UW’s nickle package . Classmate and fellow safety Victor Aiyewa will compete with Harris to start at strong safety .

At corner, aside from Forrester, the Huskies welcome back three players who saw time as the starter opposite Lewis last season . Byron Davenport, Matt Mosley and Vonzell McDowell Jr . all started last year and will fight for time there . Desmond Davis also saw game action in 2007 . Redshirt freshman Quinton Richardson emerged during the spring as a probable starter at one cornerback spot, and classmate Marquis Persley is also likely to compete for time at corner . Mick Connors, a transfer from the University of San Diego, enrolled in the spring and adds depth in the secondary .

SPECIALISTS New special teams coordinator Brian White will have a full compliment of players returning at kicker, punter and long snapper . He’ll have more on his hands in replacing his return specialists as Anthony Russo (punt returns) and Louis Rankin (kick returns) have both departed .

Senior Jared Ballman handled all of the Huskies’ punting last year, finishing with a solid 40 .9 yard average and a well-built reputation for consistency . Ryan Perkins handled all but one field goal attempt and all extra-point tries, making 15-of-20 field goals and 45-of-46 PATs .

Scholarship redshirt freshman Erik Folk, whose contention for placekicking duties last mesphin season was cut short by injury, is back to health and will add to the competition along FORRESTER with classmates Cory Rutkowski (kicker) and Kiel Rasp (punter) . The Huskies roster also boasts a big group of long snappers . Junior Danny Morovick has handled every snap of his two-year UW career . He’s joined by veteran Robert Lukevich, redshirt freshman Ben Hayes and newcomer Brendan Lopez, who red- shirted as a freshman at Michigan last year .
