Education and Development

BETTER TOGETHER

THE FEDERATION OF EDUCATION IN CENTRAL Leaders Greetings

s a group of vocational schools interna- tional contacts are important for us. In AFinland the work places have more and more foreign customers and workers from other countries. There will be new foreign companies in our country and exports are an increasing activity in business life.

That is why we want our students to get internatio- nal experience during their studies. Our target is that it will be natural for them to meet people from other countries and speak foreign languages.

We send students abroad to get international work experience. We also receive foreign guests; stu- dents, teachers and experts. Our staff participates in development projects with partners from other countries. Internationality is already an everyday routine for us and it will not disappear.

It is our main task to educate good workers who are proud of their skills and who manage every situation in working life!

Development projects with companies have resulted in new competence, efficiency, new operations models and technolo- gies. Hundreds of companies and thousands of staff members in the region have participated in our projects. The projects have also been used to promote internationality of companies in the region as well as employment of those who are in a weak posi- tion in the labour market and thus preventing social exclusion on a larger spectrum, too.

10 Internationality in KPEDU

ur idea is to integrate internationality and foreign cultures into the teaching and add international network cooperation in our education. One of the key factors in our international activities Ois to provide our students and staff with international contacts, mobility and opportunities for cooperation. Our main partner regions are the and Europe. With the means of project financing and grants we offer our students and staff opportunities to become truly international. With EU-funding we can offer our students and staff work based learning periods abroad. Working periods abroad is the most important form of international activities. Internationality is an integral part of curricula in all our sectors. The institutes are partners or coordinators in various international projects. Our objective is that once our students complete their qualifi- cations, they are able to work in international and multicultural environments. International experience also benefits the students when they are looking for employment. In the future internationality will gain ever more importance in the Federation’s activities through for example increasing tuition in foreign languages in our institutes.

pprenticeship training as one form of vocational training has proved to be a very viable tool to extin- guish deficits in competence and skills for example in situations where a company needs new staff, old Aemployees are transferred to new or more demanding tasks or their job description is broadened. A vast majority of professional competence is acquired though doing the actual work at your own workplace. This learning is further supplemented with more theoretical studies at a suitable institute. Studying is very flexible. Personalisation of the stud- ies allows for the different starting levels of the students. In our region, apprenticeship training is the mostly used when adults wish to increase their professional competence or change their vocation. The annual average number of students enrolled in the ap- prenticeship office is 750 students. It is easy to perceive the sectors where the local employers operate by looking at which and how many further and specialist qualifications are obtained. In this form of training, it is a clear indicator of the employer’s commitment that the qualification is in fact obtained. It is a req- uisite for successful apprenticeship training that the employer firstly provides the chance for the training but also commits to it. The most popular fields of vocational education and training in our region are technology, communications and transport and business and administration. The Central Ostrobothnia Apprenticeship Centre has partici- pated in several internationalisation projects of apprenticeship centres and has administered one such project.
