Raising the Bar: The Reciprocal Roles and Deviant Distinctions of Music and Alcohol in Acadiana by © Marion MacLeod A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Ethnomusicology Memorial University of Newfoundland June, 2013 St. John 's, Newfoundland ABSTRACT The role of alcohol in musical settings is regularly relegated to that of incidental by stander, but its pervasive presence as object, symbol or subject matter in Acadian and Cajun performance contexts highlights its constructive capacity in the formation of Acadian and Cajun musical worlds. Individual and collective attitudes towards alcohol consumption implicate a wide number of cultural domains which, in this work, include religious display, linguistic development, respect for social conventions, and the historically-situated construction of identities. This research uses alcohol as an interpretive lens for ethnomusicological understanding and, in so doing, questions the binaries of marginal and mainstream, normal and deviant, sacred and profane, traditional and contemporary, sober and inebriated. Attitudes towards alcohol are informed by, and reflected in, all ofthese cultural conflicts, highlighting how agitated such categorizations can be in lived culture. Throughout the dissertation, I combine the historical examples of HatTy Choates and Cy aMateur with ethnographic examinations of culturally-distinct perfonnative habits, attitudes toward Catholicism, and compositional qualities. Compiling often incongruous combinations of discursive descriptions and enacted displays, my research suggests that opposition actually confirms interdependence. Central to this study is an assertion that levels of cultural competence in Cajun Louisiana and Acadian Nova Scotia are uneven and that the repercussions of this unevenness are musically and behaviourally demonstrated. -

LITTLE BIG TOWN BIOGRAPHY PAIN KILLER Hot on the Heels of Their
LITTLE BIG TOWN BIOGRAPHY PAIN KILLER Hot on the heels of their wildly successful album Tornado, Little Big Town’s prescription for continued success and creative drive is in their sixth album, Pain Killer. The two years since Tornado’s release have proven to be the most formative and motivational for the inspired family of artists, together since 1998. In the short time since Tornado, Little Big Town earned two number one radio hits with Tornado and Pontoon, a Grammy, two ACM and three CMA awards and an Emmy. They also found time to headline a sold-out tour, join Keith Urban across North America and host the CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock twice. These hard-earned accolades and new opportunities provided a steady dose of inspiration at every turn, leading them to a fresh and very intentional approach to their latest studio album. They co-wrote most of Tornado’s songs as a group and knocked out production in a matter of weeks, whereas the road to Pain Killer was significantly longer in the making, and much more calculated. LBT intentionally began writing and curating their songs early in their tour for Tornado in May 2013. They followed the creative energy wherever it flowed by splitting into different writing combinations. “We decided not to lock ourselves into writing as a group. We wanted a more relaxed and free approach,” says Karen Fairchild. “There was no pressure to write as certain groups at certain times. We followed the inspiration instead of forcing it.” “I don’t know that we would have written Tumble and Fall if the boys had been in the room,” she continues. -

Lyrics by Thorsten Nesch 1 a Few Words
Lyrics by Thorsten Nesch 1 A few words: Thanks for giving a damn and being interested in my songs. 1998 I started writing songs in English, same time I picked up the guitar. These are not all of my songs but the ones I deem passable. You can (or did) listen to them on www.nesch.bandcamp.com. It's an evolving process as I re-record my songs. Most songs are about the stuff I like: drinking, love and travelling. Besides music I also like books and movies, so I drop some names like Bukowski, Kerouac and Jarmusch among others in here. The songs take place in Canada (B.C and Alberta), Germany, Ireland, Albania, Australia and other places. You find an anecdote to each song in here what was a fun thing to do. I also added some evidence and handwritten first versions of songs in here. I would like seeing that myself in songbooks from others. Over half of these lyrics I didn't write at home, I wrote them on the road, in buses, many trains, hotel rooms, cafes, bars and during writing residencies in Denmark (H.A.L.D.) and Hausach in the Black Forest (LeseLenz). And by the way “Thanks for giving a damn” by Otis Gibbs is also one of the best music podcasts out there. Do yourself a favour and check it out. Other tips? Over last 10 years most music I discovered over “Hi54Lofi” blog run by Jeremy. Another radio show is “Dirty Windshield Radio Hour” by Leeroy Stagger on CKUA, what is a good place to be for your ears anyway, in case you didn't know already.
