This is a special and most holy time of the year for us as Catholics leading up to the biggest feast on the Church’s calendar, Easter! This week all the faithful are asked to change our pace; slow down and walk with Jesus as He enters Jerusalem and the Way of the Cross at Calvary. Whether you are able to attend the liturgies in person or if you livestream the liturgies at home, we can all focus on our shared prayer together on each day of Holy Week. You may even begin some of your own family rituals that will become traditions and continue as part of your prayer life in your domestic church!

One of the readings at daily Mass a couple weeks ago told the story of Jesus coming upon a man who had been ill for thirtyeight years. The Gospel tells us, “When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him, ‘Do you want to be well?’” Do you want to be well? That question has stayed with me since reading it. It seems such an obvious question, I mean, of course the man wanted to be healed. Yet Jesus still asks the question. God doesn’t impose even His healing on anyone. God doesn’t impose Himself. He merely invites. But even more than that, the question is striking when we read it as addressed to us. Jesus also asks us: Do you want to be well? There is so much left unsaid there: Do you want to be healthy? But even more so, do you want to be at peace, do you want to know joy, do you want to love and be loved… In other words, do you want to be happy?! The answer to these questions seems obvious… Of course we want to be happy! No one sets out in life to be miserable! But how often do we turn to something, anything other than God in pursuit of happiness? As CS Lewis once wrote, “All that we call human historymoney, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery[is] the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.” If we truly believe that God loves us and wants us to be happy, if we want to be well, we need to live our lives according to His plan for us. We need to allow Him to be part of our lives, after all, God doesn’t impose Himself on us. We need to do all we can to love God with all our hearts, minds, and strength, and love our neighbor as we love ourself. We need to embrace the Sacraments, to maintain our connection to Him and give God the opportunity to fill us with His grace, His gift of Himself. As we enter into Holy Week this year, now is the perfect time to decide to commit to living out our faith as deeply as we can, participating in the Masses, prayers, and services offered (inperson or via livestream), and so responding to, “Do you want to be well?” with a heartfelt, “YES!!!”
