ANNUAL REPORT AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR JOURNALS 2019/20 2019/20 ANNUAL REPORT

The past months have taught ASM JOURNALS STAFF the world the importance of LEADERSHIP Melissa Junior Rebecca Alvania microbiology. Adar Luckey ASM Journals is publishing information that is at the forefront of research on SARS- CoV-2 and COVID-19. We should be proud that our Journals program is the primary EDITORIAL forum for learning about the biology, epidemiology, treatment, and testing of this Miriam Day horrible disease. Although we could not predict the current pandemic, we could Heather Drought predict that the ASM Journals program would rise to the occasion. Our ability to Nicole Glenn Maisha Miles serve the scientific community and public is due to the excellent reputation that Diane Smith the program has developed over the past century. Supported by outstanding ASM Jasmine Wallace staff, our journals are editorially led by active scientists from all areas of microbiology Laurie Webby who have the goal of publishing the best research of their peers. Our peers regularly comment on the pleasure of working within our system and with staff PRODUCTION to publish their latest work. While most scientific publishers grapple with declining Rob Arthur submissions, ASM Journals has grown. Charles Brown Manuel Cavazos The Journals program is constantly striving to innovate so that we are always Stephanie D’Agostino ready to help move science forward. For example, the past year has seen greater Amanda Donaldson emphasis on openness in publishing. We have been working on facilitating Karen Esplin openness in peer review with open peer review at mSystems, and we are accepting Ellie Ghatineh peer review reports from other publishers when an author submits their manuscript Jeff Herring to an ASM journal. We have strengthened our open data policies so that future David Jackson Jess Kanotz scientists can more easily build off of work published in our journals and increase the Stefanie Kowalski impact of publications in our journals. We are also asking authors to be transparent Mike Lerman about the roles of each author in a publication. Among society publishers, ASM is at Noel Lin the forefront of openness. Rob Masson Julie Nachman The Journals program is excited to continue our process of transitioning to a fully Chad Nelson publication model. This was initiated with our newest journals, which Malinda Reid are published under a “Gold” open access model, and complemented by our core Barb Slinker journals, which are published under a hybrid model. Our next step is to transition Tasha Thomasian Microbiology Spectrum, a journal that publishes monographs, to Spectrum, a journal Becky Zwadyk that will publish original research articles. Spectrum will become a Gold open COPYEDITING access journal that publishes manuscripts from across the field of microbiology that describe scientifically sound results. Following the change to Spectrum, we will begin John N. Bell to transition each of our core titles to the Gold open access model. Cathy Blickendorfer Joe Carey Karen MacKavanagh Despite the challenges our world faces, this is an exciting time to be a Margaret Milhous microbiologist. We are proud to be able to serve our authors and readers.

RECENT INITIATIVES AT ASM JOURNALS

OPEN PEER REVIEW OPEN DATA POLICY In September 2019 mSystems launched a pilot project allowing ASM Journals launched an open data policy in 2019. The authors to post the peer review history online with their policy defines the minimal data set that is required for a published paper. Roughly 25% of mSystems authors have published paper, when data must be made available, and opted into OPR. A full analysis of the pilot will be conducted in acceptable data-sharing methods. UPCOMING INITIATIVES FOR ASM JOURNALS

ATYPON MIGRATION METADATA REGISTRY PILOT Over the coming months ASM Journals will be migrating our In fall 2020, mSystems will participate in a pilot with the National online platform management from HighWire to Atypon, with Microbiome Data Collaborative and Lawrence Berkeley the goal of launching on Atypon in spring 2021. The move to National Laboratory to support their efforts in developing a Atypon offers significant new opportunities for the Journals metadata registry for microbiome research. program.
