  • Paul Simon Concert in Israel
Paul Simon concert in Israel So…I hesitated down to the last moment about Paul Simon, 6 p.m. on Thursday evening in Jerusalem, and in the end took the advice of Jill, one of our bright young interns at the Palestine-Israel Journal, “to fly on the seat of my pants”, which I gather means, “go by instinct.” My torn instinct led exhausted me to stay in Jerusalem to hear Dr. Hans-Gert Pottering, former president of the European Parliament talk about “The Arab Spring and the New Middle East”, together with three other German colleagues, at the nearby Konrad Adenauer Conference Center at Mishkenot Sha’ananim. The event itself was quite fascinating, as was the networking at the post- event reception, though it was a little unnerving to hear four Germans speaking in Jerusalem in German (of course with simultaneous translation into Hebrew and English). I was told that the fact that Chancellor Merkel was allowed to address the Knesset in German broke the ice about Germans speaking German in Israel. But of course, I simultaneously wondered what I had missed at the Paul Simon concert, and carefully read all the reviews. From the playlist of 22 songs, I see that he avoided singing his masterpiece, “Bridge Over Troubled Waters,” maybe because Garfunkle wasn’t there with his golden voice. He also chose not to sing “Homeward Bound,” “I am a Rock,” “El Condor Pasa” (“I’d rather be a hammer than a nail”), and many other Simon & Garfunkle classics. Gideon Levy on the front page of Haaretz wrote about how it reminded him of his youth, and the soundtrack of his youth.

  • 1966 Record Releases
1966 UK Record Releases by Date This is a list of all UK 45 singles and EP’s found on the 45 cat website and any new release sheets as of the 15/03/2016. Generally records that don't have a full release are not included. Some spoken word only records are not listed, plus “story” ones. Records that would have had a specific week when they were fist released, but which dates have not been found, but are known to have been issued on an actual month are included at the end of each weekly listing for the month in question. Numbers in red indicate ownership on 45 cat for those with 5 or more. In some cases, such as chart hits, the number of “wants” is added on. Caution should be noted with ownership figure, as the record might have only been available as a promo record that wasn’t issued to the public. These however will be popular with collectors of records. If it is known to be never issued to the public, what is called on the 45 Cat site as a “stock” record. Then that will not be included. In some cases records by well known acts were never issued as “stock” and some of these have been included, but such records are shown as “promo only”. They are included to show that the record couldn’t have made the charts in 1966. At least as a UK issue! Records that made the charts of the time are only stated where no specific week has been found or if a chart record fails to score 5 ownership indications - indicated by the term hit.

OLLI CAL, 2020 fall online syllabus Instructor: Pete Elman Course Title: "It's All About the Song" Sub-title: "The Mount Olympus of American pop-rock songwriters" Course description : The essence of popular music is the song; whether it is folk, pop, rock, R&B, soul or country, the song is the core of the popular record. • Progsheet CD Reviews
ProgSheet CD Reviews http://progsheet1.hypermart.net/CDReviews.html Steve Adams - Camera Obscura (3 Ears) This is one of those CDs I got blind in the mail. The name seemed sorta familiar, then it clicked that he played guitar with Peter Bardens in Mirage. Adams is a breezy, precise player in the Frank Gambale/Joe Satriani school, only with more depth and melodic panache than either. The dozen tunes on "Camera Obscura" run the gamut of feels while falling into, for lack of a better term, jazz prog. The mood never gets too heavy, and there's a sort of California laid back attitude to everything, exemplified in the bright, peppy cover of Steve Hackett's "Jacuzzi." The female rhythm section of bassist Desha Dunnahoe and drummer Karen Teperberg (from B.L.U.E.'s Chris Botti's jazz band) are tight as anything and help propel Adams' fluid riffs. 9 of the 12 tracks are instrumentals, and Adams' vocals on the other 3 are very pleasant. For prog fans and guitar hero lovers, this is quite a delightful disc! Jon Anderson - Live In Sheffield 1980 (Voiceprint) Recorded on the Song Of Seven tour with the New Life Band (which includes such notables as John Giblin, Morris Pert & Chris Rainbow) this 2 disc set is part of Jon's 20 disc set of "lost tapes." There's lots of tape hiss and the bass gets too boomy in spots, but you get beyond it rather quickly, and into the performance. What a performance it is! Jon Anderson is in great voice and backed by a solid, energetic band.
