2 Michelmersh & Timsbury Village Newsletter May/June 2015 EDITORIAL Thank you to all those who watched Mr Turner in the Jubilee Hall. I understand we had a capacity audience. As I was holidaying in a slightly colder climate I was unable to attend. Improvements to the Jubilee Hall have been completed. We now have new curtains, new internal doors, a new kitchen hatch and new lighting outside. Remember the hall is a village amenity so please use it by booking your events there and supporting those public events held. Details on using the hall can be found on the village web site or from Sarah Medley on 368492. If you are interested in what is happening to the village then ensure you attend the Annual Parish Meeting on Friday May 1st. This is your chance to meet and question the Parish Council. They are also interested in your thoughts for the future of the village. Now that spring or even summer has arrived, or at least it has at the time of writing, all you gardeners don’t forget the annual plant sale which will be held in the Jubilee Hall on Saturday 16th May at 10:00. This is always very popular so get there on time to bag the best bargains! Another event to note in you diary is the annual Village BBQ. This will be held in the evening on Friday 3rd July and is always very enjoyable. On page 14 is the first instalment of an interview held with Betty Nutley. It gives an interesting insight into life in the village in a bygone age. Mike Koscian Editor

The Holy Spirit and You

Up until the age of 19, I had thought that Christianity was about rules, rituals and religion – and that it was very boring! What radically changed that view was the discovery that to be a Christian is to have a relationship with God. It’s not just a moral code or an intellectual belief; it’s an experience of God.

This relationship with God is a result of his Holy Spirit at work in our lives.

When Jesus walked on this earth he could only be in one place with one group of people at any one time. Before he returned to heaven, Jesus promised his followers that the Holy Spirit would come to take his place. The Spirit would be with every believer in every age in every place. Jesus could only be with his disciples; the Holy Spirit can be in us, filling us with God’s power and helping us to know God personally.

So the Holy Spirit is God making his home in our lives; acting in our world today, working among us and through us.

He changes us from the inside The Holy Spirit comes to us with the express purpose of transforming our characters step by step to make us more like the perfect character of Jesus. He comes to clean up the mess, heal the hurts, smooth off the edges, change the negative attitudes and make us whole. By the way, that takes a life- time!

He sets us free The Holy Spirit comes to free us. God longs to set people free from the things that hold them prisoner. That doesn’t mean that as Christians we never have difficulties or that we never suffer; suffering is part of being human. It does mean that we can experience freedom to be the people God created us to be by the Holy Spirit working in us.

From what might we need to be set free? A guilty conscience perhaps; or a sense that we are only loved conditionally? Maybe from fear of the future, of being alone, of rejection; or from resentment, hurt or bitterness; or from the lie that God is angry with us. Whatever binds us, Jesus came to win our freedom and the Holy Spirit makes that happen in our experience.

He gives us power to live, love and serve The Holy Spirit comes to help us carry on God’s mission in his world. That mission is one of love, com- passion and healing for hurting people and a broken world. He wants to use us, as individuals and churches, to tell others the good news that people can be forgiven, restored to a relationship with God their Creator and have hope for the future, because of what Jesus has done by his death and resurrec- tion. He also helps us to be part of his plan to transform and heal our hurting world.

Why not pray with me for the Holy Spirit to fill our lives and churches with his power and love.

Steve Pittis
