St. Winifred was born in North Wales in the early seventh century and was of noble lineage, a descendant of early Welsh kings. Her mother’s brother was an abbot, St. Beuno, Abbot. From an early age, Winifred was instructed in the spiritual life by her uncle, and her sole desire was to dedicate herself to God and become a nun. She lived under St. Beuno’s care, near a chapel he had built in her native town of Abeluyc. The feastday of St. Winifred, virgin and martyr, is November 3. He founded around 10 monasteries and was known for his simple way of life and asceticism; he taught his followers to refrain from eating meat and drinking anything but water. The miracle most commonly associated with St David is said to have taken place whilst he was preaching to a large crowd at the Synod of Brefi. It is said that the ground on which he was stood rose up to form a small hill, in order for everyone to see him. Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus! Prayer: God, on this day, we remember Saint David, your servant. Grant that we may learn from him and respond to the words that are thought to be his last: ‘Be steadfast, and do the little things’. Amen. Reflection: "Brothers and sisters, be joyful, and keep your faith and your creed, and do the little things that you have seen me do and heard about." Church in Wales Review July 2012 The September 2010 meeting of the Governing Body was notable for the number of contributions from members with a common message: “The Church in Wales cannot go on doing the same things in the same way; some things need to change and we are open to – and indeed encourage – that possibility”. The Standing Committee and Bench of Bishops responded to this call by appointing an external review of the Church, with particular reference to its structures and use of resources, to increase the effectiveness of the Church’s ministry and witness. The Review Group’s members are prominent thinkers with a blend of experience in dealing with matters ecclesiastical and organisational: Lord Harries of Pentregarth, the former Bishop of Oxford; Professor Charles Handy, the eminent writer and adviser on business and organisational theory (and son of a Church of Ireland archdeacon); and Professor Patricia Peattie, former Convenor of the Scottish Episcopal Church’s Standing Committee and the first chairwoman of the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. The aim was to commission a review that could move quickly to gather and assimilate information about the state of the Church in Wales, then provide independent advice on how the Church might reshape itself to be more effective in the twenty-first century. Given the extent of its members’ other commitments, the Review Group has pursued its task with extraordinary vigour and dedication. The Group determined its own approach and programme. It has visited every diocese in Wales, meeting with the Bishop and Diocesan team in each and holding an open meeting for Church members to express their views. -

Price £2.50 Number 1 October 2003 A warm welcome to the Forum’s first Newsletter and a big thank you to all of the contributers who have produced articles for this issue. Thanks also to Lin Norton for producing the cover heading. As Editor, producing this Newsletter has been very much a steep learning curve, particularly getting to grips with ‘new technology’ so if there are any glitches in what you actually receive please bear with me. We had intended producing this Newsletter in two formats, electronic and hard copy, in order to keep the costs down and speed up distribution. However, due to the size of the finished copy it is probably too large to send to most of you as an e-mail attachment so, for the time being, we are producing it in hard copy format. Hopefully, in due course, we will be able overcome this problem so that those of you able to receive electronic communications can receive it in glorious technicolor. This first issue covers a wide range of topics from planning issues to individual building stones as well as Forum business, short notes and the first field meeting report. Jonathan Adams’ article on Cardiff’s Millennium Centre is a fore-taster for the field trip on 29th November the details of which, along with those of all of the Forum’s other meetings until the end of 2004 are to be found elsewhere in the Newsletter. Welsh disestablishment: ‘A blessing in disguise’. David W. Jones The history of the protracted campaign to achieve Welsh disestablishment was to be characterised by a litany of broken pledges and frustrated attempts. It was also an exemplar of the ‘democratic deficit’ which has haunted Welsh politics. As Sir Henry Lewis1 declared in 1914: ‘The demand for disestablishment is a symptom of the times. It is the democracy that asks for it, not the Nonconformists. The demand is national, not denominational’.2 The Welsh Church Act in 1914 represented the outcome of the final, desperate scramble to cross the legislative line, oozing political compromise and equivocation in its wake. Even then, it would not have taken place without the fortuitous occurrence of constitutional change created by the Parliament Act 1911. This removed the obstacle of veto by the House of Lords, but still allowed for statutory delay. Lord Rosebery, the prime minister, had warned a Liberal meeting in Cardiff in 1895 that the Welsh demand for disestablishment faced a harsh democratic reality, in that: ‘it is hard for the representatives of the other 37 millions of population which are comprised in the United Kingdom to give first and the foremost place to a measure which affects only a million and a half’.3 But in case his audience were insufficiently disheartened by his homily, he added that there was: ‘another and more permanent barrier which opposes itself to your wishes in respect to Welsh Disestablishment’, being the intransigence of the House of Lords.4 The legislative delay which the Lords could invoke meant that the Welsh Church Bill was introduced to parliament on 23 April 1912, but it was not to be enacted until 18 September 1914. -

Transformed Within, Transformed Without: The Enactment of Religious Conversion in Medieval and Early Modern European Saint Plays Emily Ciavarella Kuntz Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Emily Ciavarella Kuntz All Rights Reserved Abstract Transformed Within, Transformed Without: The Enactment of Religious Conversion in Medieval and Early Modern European Saint Plays Emily Ciavarella Kuntz My dissertation investigates the ways in which both medieval and early modern saint plays depict and incite religious conversion through self-aware theatrical techniques. In each of my chapters, I examine one or two popular saint plays from a given period and area (medieval England, medieval France, early modern Spain, and early modern England) and show how each play invites the audience to undergo a spiritual shift parallel to that of the saint protagonist. These playmakers harnessed the affective power and technology of theatrical performance to invite the audience to engage with performed religious conversion in a controlled, celebratory environment and to encourage them to convert toward a more deeply felt Christianity. The plays reconfigured the audience’s sensory and intellectual understanding of Christian theology in order for the audience to recognize spiritual truth within an inherently communal, participatory, and performative space. The plays I examine depend on the audience’s familiarity with theatrical culture and practice in order to distinguish between sincere and insincere religious performance. By making the process of conversion a theatrical performance onstage, these plays could advocate for the theatrical medium as a genuine and effective catalyst for spiritual renewal. -
