  • Ex-White Sox Slugger Ron Kittle Takes His Cuts for the Chicago Baseball Museum
Ex-White Sox slugger Ron Kittle takes his cuts for the Chicago Baseball Museum. By Paul Ladewski After what the Cubs went through in the postseason, do you have any sympathy for them given that you played for the 1983 White Sox team that also experienced a sudden and massive slump? There's no sympathy for anybody in this game. There are winners and there are losers. That's how I was brought up to play, you know? There's going to be a W next to one team and not the other. But I don't like to the see the season end for any team. How do you explain that the White Sox scored only three runs in four games against the Baltimore Orioles in the ALCS that season? Good pitching will shut out down good hitting. In '83, we finished, what, 20 games ahead of everybody in our division? A slow time was going to come for us -- and it did. (Laughs.) Orioles starter Mike Flanagan fractured your left kneecap with a pitch in Game 3 of the series. You sat out the last three innings of that game and all of the next one. If healthy, would you have made a difference in the last two games? Nobody knows. I can only attest to what I thought -- I wanted to be the hero every single day that I played the game. Every day. I knew that I would be the goat more times than not, but at least I went into every game with an attitude.

  • Savvy Trades Mark Timeline of Sox Rebuilding Projects
Savvy trades mark timeline of Sox rebuilding projects By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Wednesday, January 25, 2017 If White Sox GM Rick Hahn really scores long-term in his first two deals of the newly-minted rebuilding era, he’ll mere- ly be following a successful blueprint from past housecleaning efforts. Sox fans had their first crack at meeting the products of the deals at a SoxFest with a very different theme this winter that was as much about the future as the Nellie Fox (from) left, Minnie Minoso and Sherman present and past. Lollar all were acquired by Frank (Trader) Lane. Going back to the start of the "Go-Go Sox" era at the dawn of the Fifties, the Sox have frequently supplemented home-grown prospects with trades that netted young talent. The only exception was a kind of reverse-rebuilding after the 1959 season, in which the Sox foolishly traded all their best young hitting talent for veterans in an ultimately un- successful attempt to beef up the lineup to ensure a repeat pennant. The voluble, colorful Frank (Trader) Lane is given credit for assembling the Go-Go teams that finally buried the decades of hubris from the 1919 Black Sox. If Hahn could strike gold in the same fashion as Lane, he’ll be remembered long after his own GM ten- ure concludes. One of the greatest trades in Sox history took place soon after the 1949 season. Lane ob- tained second baseman Nellie Fox, who had just broken into the Philadelphia Athletics’ lineup in ‘49, for catcher Joe Tipton.

  • Enigmatic’ Best Definition of 1980S Decade for Sox
‘Enigmatic’ best definition of 1980s decade for Sox By Mark Liptak Posted Tuesday, September 24th, 2013 (This is the first in a series of historic themes involving the Chicago White Sox. The theme will change each time in order to give you the broadest range of some of the finest moments over the past 70-plus years. It is our hope that fans, regardless of age, will get a new appre- ciation of the great players, great moments and great memories that the Sox have brought to generations of Chicagoans.) The 1980s saw the White Sox franchise transi- tion from the way things used to be to new frontiers and opportunities. New ownership, a new stadium and a new philosophy took hold at various times and ultimately advanced the organization. But like all progress it came at a cost. It was measured in the destruction of the original Comiskey Park, in the letting go of a beloved (to say nothing of one of the best) GM and in a threat that alienated, for a period of time, a loyal fan base. We’re going to look back at the “Enigmatic ‘80s” in four parts; this first part Carlton Fisk hitting against the Cubs in an will look at what happened on the field and in exhibition game at Wrigley Field in 1981. Fisk's arrival just before the '81 season was the organization focusing on the 1981 and the big spark for the new Sox era. 1982 seasons. The ‘80s represented another “split personality” decade for the Sox. Like the ‘60s and 70’s, the Sox started out pretty well only to be in complete disarray by the end of it -- in fact the Sox almost moved to St.
