  • Jack Hawksworth Transforms His Fourth Pole of the Season Into His Third Victory in Star Mazda Race 1 at the Toronto Indy
THE HAWKSWORTH CONVERSION -- JACK HAWKSWORTH TRANSFORMS HIS FOURTH POLE OF THE SEASON INTO HIS THIRD VICTORY IN STAR MAZDA RACE 1 AT THE TORONTO INDY Toronto, Canada / July 7, 2012 – Team Pelfrey driver Jack Hawksworth re-asserted his position in the 2012 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear with his third victory from the pole in Race 1 of the Star Mazda double-header at this weekend's Toronto Indy. Controlling the race from flag to flag – despite a standing start that left two cars stalled on the grid and several race incidents resulting in full-course yellows – Hawksworth brought his #82 Team Pelfrey / TORGOEN Swiss Watches / EXA Networks Mazda home 0.295 second ahead of Zach Veach, who started 3rd in the #77 Andretti Autosport / K12 / Zakosi Data Backup Mazda, and 1.156 seconds ahead of Gabby Chaves, who started 7th in the #19 JDC Motorsports / CLARO / Marca Colombia / Tecpro Mazda. Chaves now has three podium finishes this season and moves up to third in the points; Veach has two podiums, with today's result his best so far. With former championship points leader Connor De Phillippi falling victim to an ill-timed rainstorm in qualifying that saw him start 15th and a traffic-congested race that saw him finish 7th, Hawksworth regains the lead in the championship battle with 166 points to De Phillippi's 153. "I was able to control the race and run the pace I wanted, even with all the yellows and re-starts," says Hawksworth, who set the fast lap of the race and thus won his second PEAK Performance pole award of the weekend.

  • Gabby Chaves Drives a Flawless Race to Claim His Second Win from the Pole in the Star Mazda Season Finale During the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta
A TIGHT FIGHT DONE RIGHT – GABBY CHAVES DRIVES A FLAWLESS RACE TO CLAIM HIS SECOND WIN FROM THE POLE IN THE STAR MAZDA SEASON FINALE DURING THE PETIT LE MANS AT ROAD ATLANTA Road Atlanta / October 19, 2012 – Colombian racer Gabriel 'Gabby' Chaves, finished his rookie season in the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear in the best possible way, with a win from the pole that cemented his second-place finish in the championship battle. It was his second consecutive win from the pole; Chaves did it the first time in Race 2 at the previous event at Mazda Raceway and then, like today, he drove a flawless race with a top competitor filling the mirrors of the #19 JDC Motorsports / CLARO / Marca Colombia / Tecpro Mazda every foot of the way between green and checkered. In this case, it was the bright red #88 Andretti Autosport / Comfort Revolution Mazda car of Sage Karam. He, too, had a nearly-flawless race until – just for 'style points,' as he put it – he spun and continued in turn 7 on the last lap of the 37-lap race. Coming home third, and the potential beneficiary of Karam's mistake were it not for the 18-second gap between 2nd and 3rd, was Connor De Phillippi in the #2 Juncos Racing / ModSpace Racing / One24 Mazda. Trying to make the best of a bad situation that nearly destroyed his car in qualifying yesterday and dropped him to 9th on the starting grid, De Phillippi drove a smart, disciplined race to finish on the podium.
