14 2011 Lady Rams Volleyball 2010 Review 2010 Review Season Review

L ADY R AMS D ISPLAY TALENT The 2010 Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team was a talented squad that featured seven All-Conference selections including the Freshman of the Year.

The team waded through a very tough schedule and, after losing its first three games, got out to a 7-4 start that included a hotly contested 3-1 win over RRAC rival Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Then the team hit a skid in which it dropped three straight in Graceland University’s Pizza Shack Invitational, one at Our Lady of the Lake and three in a row in a tournament at UT-Brownsville. However, the Rams did take a game each off of sixth ranked UT-Brownsville and eighth ranked Columbia.

The Rams came out of that stretch no worse for the wear, taking their next three in a row and six of the following nine matches. Still the team finished the regular season at 15-18 overall and 7-7 in RRAC play.

The fifth seeded Rams met fourth seeded SAGU in the RRAC Tournament after splitting a pair of regular season matches. The match was one for the ages. After breezing to a 25-12 win in game one, the Lady Lions responded to take games two and three 26-24 and 25-21 respectively. Texas Wesleyan recovered and ripped off a 25-10 win in game four, but fell 16-14 in the decisive fifth set.

The team’s two seniors both turned in terrific seasons. Evoni Darling was named 1st-team All-RRAC after ranking second in the conference with 1080 assists. Kristen Venhuizen was a 2nd-team selection after leading the team in kills and aces. Her 274 kills ranked sixth in the conference, while her 36 service aces and her 329 digs both ranked eighth.

Freshman Katherine Rosenbusch was named to the 1st-team and selected as the conference’s Freshman of the Year. The middle blocker ranked fifth in the conference in blocks (78), seventh in hitting percentage (.241), and tenth in kills (256). Junior libero Marissa Rangel was a 2nd-team pick after coming up with a team-high 456 digs (third in the RRAC). Stephanie Dominguez and Jennifer Kline were both Honorable Mention selections.
