PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE CONTINUED

It has been an honor and a pleasure to have had Mike’s expertise and counsel on the financial matters of the Village. On behalf of a grateful Village, we thank him and wish him all the best with his future endeavors.

With that said I will unabashedly plea for volunteers to step forward to join the Village Finance Committee. To offer your services just send a note of interest addressed to me at Village Hall. You will need to have been a resident of the village for at least a year and a registered voter. A strong background in accounting would also be extremely helpful. Matter of fact, if accounting is not your bag the Village could still use a couple of volunteers to join the Planning and Zoning Committee. Just drop me a letter of interest. REMINDERS Stay safe. CAN THIS REALLY BE ?: STORY OF SLEEPY HOLLOW RAVINE

The Sleepy Hollow Ravine was formed by water melting off the top of the last retreating glaciers. Although part of the land is privately owned, the public area is maintained by the Kane County Forest Preserve District. The ravine drops 75’ to a small meandering stream and this dramatic change in topography set the stage for four different natural communities. It is home to specially adapted plants and animals suited to this unusual environment. The preserve is about 20 acres and is accessed from parking lots behind businesses on the North side of Point Blvd. about half a mile beyond Jimmy’s Charhouse. (Not in the village boundaries of Sleepy Hollow)

FALL ATTIC LOUVER MAINTENANCE

As the chill of fall air arrives, and the season begins to change, we begin to do appropriate exterior maintenance so our homes are ready for the winter ahead. Common tasks include covering plants, bringing in frost-sensitive lawn ornaments, and ensuring that patching and necessary painting projects are done. One task that is sometimes overlooked is maintenance of attic louvers.

Attic louvers are useful for providing ventilation and temperature regulation to a home if maintained properly. They can work in conjunction with mushroom, roof, and soffit vents. During the colder months, small animals and vermin may opt to take up residence in an attic louver. If an attic louver isn’t properly sealed, these animals can gain access to and take over your attic. Make sure that the interior side of your attic louvers are lined with a screen or breathable hardware cloth that will keep out animals, yet still allow airflow. It also isn’t a bad idea to install a moisture barrier around an attic louver to prevent water damage. As the elements may have caused attic louvers to loosen, it may be necessary to recaulk or tighten screws. Ensuring that your attic louvers are animal proofed is a simple task that will provide peace of mind during the colder months.

OAK WILT DISEASE

Oak wilt, caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum, has become a serious disease threat to oaks in the eastern and central . While the spread of oak wilt has not been rapid, it can be found in all counties of Illinois and 18 other states. All oaks are susceptible to oak wilt. However, the red oak subgenus (red, black, Hill’s, pin, and scarlet) is more susceptible to oak wilt than the white oak subgenus (white, bur, English, swamp white, and chinkapin). Trees in the red oak group usually die quite rapidly, often within weeks or months after infection. Trees in the white oak group typically develop symptoms more slowly, showing branch dieback for years before dying. In some cases, white and bur oaks recover after one year of infection.

The fungus, Ceratocystis fagacearum, invades the water conducting tissues (xylem) and induces the tree to clog its own vessels, preventing the normal flow of water. This causes the foliage to wilt and, frequently, tree death. Oak wilt can spread from infected trees to healthy trees through root grafts between nearby oaks and by insects that carry spores of the fungus from one tree to another.

In red oaks, the spread of the disease can be rapid with wilt symptoms starting at the top of the tree and progressing inward and downward on the lateral branches within a few weeks. Complete leaf drop usually occurs by the middle of summer. Leaves may be grayish-green, brown, or brown at the tip and margin when they drop. Few other diseases cause premature leaf drop. Other symptoms include curling leaves that become stiff, a yellow or bronze leaf color, and profuse suckering at the base of the tree. When an infected branch is cut in cross-section, brown streaking may be present in the outer ring of sapwood. For white oaks, symptoms of oak wilt on this subgenus are similar to those on red oaks, but spread more slowly and appear localized on individual branches. Complete defoliation does not occur. Trees infected for two years or more develop isolated dead branches in the crown, creating a “stag-head” appearance. Remember that similar dieback symptoms can result from other causes, such as two-lined chestnut borer, construction damage, soil compaction, changes in soil grade, cankers, and root rot. To minimize spread and control the disease, minimize pruning, sever any grafted roots, and remove infected wood. --Article courtesy of Morton Arboretum Plant Clinic

The owners of All Pets Wellness Center carefully chose the site for their establishment, and are confident that Sleepy Hollow is great choice and intend to call the

Village their home for years to come.

From the Service Club READY WHEN WE CAN It has become more than a cliché to use terms like “new normal” to describe 2020. Let’s skip that and talk about the remainder of 2020. The Service Club still anticipates no public gatherings for the remainder of the year. That does not mean the Club has gone dormant or future events are in jeopardy. We have simply made the decision that safety is most important, so until we come out the other side of this without the current restrictions, the Club will wait it out. We still meet once a month and are still engaged in some non-event projects as well as recruiting new members. Speaking of new members, we occasionally recruit members through events, but most people find their way to the Club through discussion with neighbors or during other activities, such as sports or scouting. Most of the current stable of members joined over ten years ago and most stay engaged because the Club is an essential part of our social life. We are also fortunate that the members who preceded us left the club with sound financials and an event format that has allowed us to host events without reinventing the wheel. That is why when we resume public gatherings, the Club should be ready to go. We already know how to put on events such as Easter, July 4th, Halloween and Christmas events.

Sleepy Hollow is unique in the fact that much of the Village functions are accomplished through volunteers. That means the primary qualification for volunteering boils down to a few simple words, “how can I help?” and the answer is “whatever feels right to you”. If you would like to find out more about volunteering with the Club, look at photos from past events or find out more about the Village, go to our web pages at www.shsc-il.org.
