Practical Information the Conference Location Is Near Armadale on the Sleat Peninsula on the Isle of Skye; See the Map Below Practical Information The conference location is near Armadale on the Sleat Peninsula on the Isle of Skye; see the map below. Weather and what to bring The venue for the workshop is remote and you should make sure you bring everything with you that you need. For example: phone and laptop chargers; plug adaptors for UK plugs and any medication and sunscreen. Possibly the most important thing to bring is an insect repellent. There are few things that blight a visit to Skye more than being bitten by the dreaded midge - this tiny insect can wreak havoc on your skin. There are two well-known repellants Avon Skin-so-Soft and Smidge. We recommend that you bring one of these with you. If you plan to walk in your free time you may want to invest in a net to wear over your head. The weather on Skye changes by the minute: it can be glorious, warm sunshine one moment and then pelting down with rain the next. Please come prepared with waterproofs and layers of warm clothing, bring some good sturdy shoes as well as summer clothing. Have a wonderful time! Local information The nearest shop is in Armadale, about 2 miles south of the Gaelic College, the conference venue. The nearest “town” is Broadford to the north and further afield Portree; see the map. There are buses running but they can be unreliable; a schedule is attached. Some of the local organisers will be there by car, so in the case of an emergency please ask us and we will try to give you a lift. Free Afternoon Below a list of “local options” for a visit to Armadale Castle (ruin), Museum and Gardens. There are also some local walks, the ones under Option 1 should be easy and provide no difficulty. The ones under Option 3 are a bit further afield and require good hiking shoes, water and windproof clothes (as well as possible protection against midges, i.e. insect repellent). Option 2 is self-explanatory. You need to be of legal drinking age to go on the distillery tour! Option 1 – Armadale Castle & Gardens Armadale Castle is about 2 miles south from the Gaelic College: https://www.armadalecastle.com/ Nearby easy walks which can be combined with a visit to the castle and its gardens: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/armadale.shtml https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/rubhaphoil.shtml Option 2 – Thorabaig Distillery Nearby distillery offering tours at £10 per head. https://www.torabhaig.com/ About 2.4 miles north (50 min walk) of the Gaelic College. The distillery does tours of up to 8 people at 2, 2.30, 3.00, 3.30 and 4.00 pm. The tours are 45mins long. There is also a café. Option 3 – Local walks Crossing the sleat peninsula: start about 4km away from the Gaelic College (transport would be helpful, sturdy hiking shoes required) https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/coille-dalavil.shtml Southern tip of the peninsula: about 6.3 miles south of the Gaelic College (transport needed, sturdy walking shoes required) https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/pointofsleat.shtml https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/sleat.shtml Stagecoach North Scotland Index Isle of Skye Summer Guide 2019 Service Page Number This booklet contains all the timetable and route information you’ll 50, 51, 52 Portree - Kyle of Lochalsh 3-6 need for travelling around the Isle of Skye, including maps of our routes on the centre pages. 55 Glasnakillie - Kyle of Lochalsh 7 56 56X Portree - Glendale 10-11 Real-Time Tracking We provide real-time bus information on all our 57A Portree - North End Circular 12-13 routes, enabling our passengers to check exactly when 57C Portree - North End Circular 14-15 their bus will arrive. TITLE: DATA REQUEST ISLE OF SKYE DATE: NOVEMBER 2016 REPORT CODE: SMRUC-JAC-2016-015 Figure 15 Telemetry tracks from the 13 harbour seals tagged at Loch Bay and Loch Dunvegan within the Ascrib, Isay and Dunvegan SAC in 2004 and 2005. 5.2.1 Kyle Rhea data The telemetry data from the Kyle Rhea study shows a very high density of tracks moving through and/or foraging within the channel between Skye and mainland Scotland (Figure 16). In total, 93.4% of all the GPS positions obtained from these nine seals were inside the Study Area. Only two seals left the Study Area for a significant portion of their time. Seal pv43-394-12 recorded 75% of its GPS positions inside the Study Area; for the remaining 25% of the time it travelled south out of the narrows at Kyle Rhea and west to off the south east coast of South Uist (Figure 16). Seal pv43-350-12 recorded 50% of its GPS positions inside the Study Area; for the remaining 50% of the time it travelled north out of the Study Area directly to the Butt of Lewis (Figure 16). Of these nine tagged seals, six left the narrows at Kyle Rhea at travelled north and west round the coast of Skye past the Project Site (Figure 16). One seal (pv43-376-12) moved along the coast of Skye, directly past the jetty construction site, with GPS location positions only 90 m from the construction site (Figure 17). These data show that there is clear connectivity between the Project 31 TITLE: DATA REQUEST ISLE OF SKYE DATE: NOVEMBER 2016 REPORT CODE: SMRUC-JAC-2016-015 construction site and the harbour seal haul out in Kyle Rhea.
