July 2005 Volume 36, Issue 3 Court Rules: Historic Designation of Coronado Belt Line Unlawfully Set Aside by City Council SUSAN BRANDT HAWLEY The San Diego Historical Resources Board has declared after careful review that the portion of the Coronado Belt Line railway located in San Diego is a historic site. At the request of the MTDB and Councilmember Ralph Inzunza, the City Council overturned the Board’s desig- nation in 2004 against the recommendations of City staff and the City Manager, with Councilmember Donna Frye as the sole dissenting vote. Save Our Heritage Organisa- tion (SOHO) sued the City because, as City staff pointed out, there was no legal basis to overturn the historic status. (San Diego Superior Court Case GIC837743.) On July 15th, San Diego Superior Court Judge Ronald S. Prager ruled in favor of SOHO, agreeing that the City acted unlawfully and granting a peremptory writ requir- ing the City to set aside its action. (See ruling at www.sandiego.courts.ca.gov.) Photo/Bruce Coons The Coronado Belt Line looped around the San Diego coastline and up the Silver Strand to Coronado as part of the Spreckels railroad empire, contributing to San Diego’s growth and vitality as it linked the City with the harbor and South Bay communities. From 1888 until the mid-20th century, the Belt Line regularly transported residents, visitors, World War I and II military shipments, agricultural products, building materials, and commer- cial and industrial wares through the region. SOHO Executive Director Bruce Coons said, “This is an important precedent proving that the City Council can not arbitrarily overturn historic designations just because they want to approve some ill-advised development scheme. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission October 23, 1979, Designation List 129 LP-1026 NEW AMSTERDAM THEATER, 214 West 42nd Street, Borough of Manhattan. Built 1902-03; architects Herts & Tallant. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1013, Lot 39. On January 9, 1979, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the New Amsterdam Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 4). The hearing was continued to March 13, 1979 (Item No. 3). Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. A total of 16 witnesses spoke in favor of designation at the two hearings. There were two speakers in opposition to designation. Several letters and statements supporting designation have been received. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The New Amsterdam Theater, built in 1902-03 for the theatrical producers Klaw & Erlanger, was for many years one of the most pres tigious Time Square theaters and horne of the famous Ziegfeld Follies. Designed by the noted theater architects, Herts & Tallant, the New Amsterdam Theater achieved distinction both for its functions and for its artistic program. More than just a theater, the structure was planned, at the request of Klaw & Erlanger, to incorporate two performing spaces with an office tower to house their varied theatrical interests. Even more importantly, however, the New Amsterdam is a rare example of Art Nouveau architecture in New York City, and, as such, is a major artistic statement by Herts & Tallant. Working in conjunction with sculptors, painters, and other craftsmen, they used the Art Nouveau style to carry out a dual theme--the representation of the spirit of drama and the theater and the representation of New Amsterdam in its historical sense as the city of New York. -

ABSTRACT Title of Document: VISUALIZING AMERICAN HISTORY AND IDENTITY IN THE ELLEN PHILLIPS SAMUEL MEMORIAL Abby Rebecca Eron, Master of Arts, 2014 Directed By: Professor Renée Ater, Department of Art History and Archaeology In her will, Philadelphia philanthropist Ellen Phillips Samuel designated $500,000 to the Fairmount Park Art Association “for the erection of statuary on the banks of the Schuylkill River … emblematic of the history of America from the time of the earliest settlers to the present.” The initial phase of the resulting sculpture project – the Central Terrace of the Samuel Memorial – should be considered one of the fullest realizations of New Deal sculpture. It in many ways corresponds (conceptually, thematically, and stylistically) with the simultaneously developing art programs of the federal government. Analyzing the Memorial project highlights some of the tensions underlying New Deal public art, such as the difficulties of visualizing American identity and history, as well as the complexities involved in the process of commissioning artwork intended to fulfill certain programmatic purposes while also allowing for a level of individual artists’ creative expression. Exploring Mexican Hybrid Baroque: New Perspectives on Colonial Architectural Sculpture by Maxine Compean A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master in Art History Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario ©2015 Maxine Compean ABSTRACT My research aims to challenge existing notions of cross-cultural histories during the early modern era. This thesis will speak to an alternative analysis of the cultural consequences of colonialism and how Indigenous and Mestizo styles that emerged in Mexico had a global cultural impact. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Mestizo and Indigenous architects and sculptors succeeded in creating a different artistic product from the Spanish Baroque that enabled them to represent Christian symbols in their own way. In turn, while the Spanish conqueror was physically and intellectually removed from current European artistic developments, he was visually drawn by Tequitqui architecture because it was not only a new style but it also exuded a different identity. Through the analysis of written testimonies by Spanish friars, historians and architects it is evident that the result of cultural hybridity made an impression on the European's visual culture. After close observation it became evident that the discussion of Tequitqui art, especially regarding Indigenous and Mestizo artist's recognition, is often neglected in art history books. Most literature covers the usual discourse of Spain shaping Mexican culture due to colonialism, but the opposite discussion is nonexistent. Therefore this study aims to challenge the Western discourse and 2 propose that the cosmopolitanism of Tequitqui art and the artists who created it deserve acknowledgment in the literature of Baroque art history.
