NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Intergovernmental Relations Secretariat 2015IGR0003-000454 April 3, 2015 B.C. contributes to international Lincoln commemoration VICTORIA – A letter reflecting the personal stories of British Columbians concerning the legacy of Abraham Lincoln is now included in an online exhibit commemorating the former U.S. president. In remembrance of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s death in April 1865, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum asked Premier Christy Clark to prepare a letter reflecting on the meaning of Abraham Lincoln and his legacy to British Columbians. The letter is now paired with condolences sent by the Governor and Legislature of the Colony of Vancouver Island to the United States, following President Lincoln’s assassination in 1865. It will be a permanent part of the museum’s collections, shared in an online exhibit celebrating the legacy of a man known and revered around the world. To ensure the letter is truly reflective of British Columbia’s unique perspective, Vancouver-False Creek MLA Sam Sullivan engaged with British Columbians in February 2015, to collaborate and share their personal stories about the legacy Lincoln created. During the online consultation, which coincided with Black History Month and Heritage Week, historians, educators, musicians, community organizations, political leaders, heritage bloggers and citizens with family connections to Lincoln shared their stories through blog posts, email, mail, social media and by phone. Comments and personal reflections touched on the legacy of Abraham Lincoln, the civil war era and B.C.’s connection to this important time in history. NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Ministry of Education 2016EDUC0286-002715 Dec. 16, 2016 Vancouver students tapped for career and skills training development VANCOUVER ʹStudents in the Vancouver School District are connecting with skills and technology training development thanks to a $17,500 grant to the district from the Province͛s Shoulder Tappers Program. Vancouver False-Creek MLA Sam Sullivan, Vancouver-Fraserview MLA Suzanne Anton, and Vancouver-Langara MLA Moira Stilwell announced this today on behalf of Education Minister Mike Bernier. Students are receiving the supports, skills, and experiences they need for the jobs of tomorrow from the help of shoulder tappers͸career co-ordinators and recruitment specialists. These mentors are connecting students with innovative workshops and on-the-job opportunities in skilled-trades and technology careers, encouraging them with positive input and advice, and cultivating their passions. All 33 districts that applied met the requirements and received the 2016/17 grant. Twelve districts receive funding for similar programs under the Northern Development Initiative Trust and a further eight receive funding from the ministry as part of the Northern Opportunities Partnership or the South Island Partnership. The Shoulder Tappers Program supports B.C.͛s Skills for Jobs Blueprint, which is re-engineering the province͛s education and apprenticeship system so training dollars and programs are targeted to in-demand jobs. It also supports the #BCTECH Strategy͸a key component of the BC Jobs Plan to support
