THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR (1941-1945) The great Patriotic War began on June 22, 1941. Germany attacked the Soviet Union. The German army was stronger then and it was moving quickly. In September 1941 the fascists began the blockade of Leningrad. Thousands died of hunger. It took 900 days to break it. Soon the fascists were near the capital. But the Soviet soldiers were ready to die but not to move back. Then came the great battles of Kursk, Stalingrad (Volgograd), Tula, Minsk, Kiev, Odessa, Sevastopol, Novorossiisk. Some of these cities are Hero-Cities. All Soviet people are proud of our talented generals: G.K. Zhukov, I.S. Konev, K.K. Rokossovsky, A.M. Vasilevsky. We will never forget the names of Alexander Matrosov, Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, twenty-eight men of General Panfilov’s division, the young men from Krasnodon, the heroes of the Brest Fortress. Over 20 million people died but Hitler didn’t conquer the USSR. On May 9, 1945 the war was over in Berlin. Now Victory Day is one of the most important holidays. There is a parade of veterans in every town and city of our Motherland. People put flowers to the Memorial of the Unknown Soldier to remember those who didn’t come back from the war. Bonnell Summer 2015 Abstract Making Ivan-Uzbek: War, Friendship of the Peoples, and the Creation of Soviet Uzbekistan, 1941-1945 by Charles David Shaw Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Yuri Slezkine, Chair This dissertation addresses the impact of World War II on Uzbek society and contends that the war era should be seen as seen as equally transformative to the tumultuous 1920s and 1930s for Soviet Central Asia. It argues that via the processes of military service, labor mobilization, and the evacuation of Soviet elites and common citizens that Uzbeks joined the broader “Soviet people” or sovetskii narod and overcame the prejudices of being “formerly backward” in Marxist ideology. The dissertation argues that the army was a flexible institution that both catered to national cultural (including Islamic ritual) and linguistic difference but also offered avenues for assimilation to become Ivan-Uzbeks, part of a Russian-speaking, pan-Soviet community of victors. Yet as the war wound down the reemergence of tradition and violence against women made clear the limits of this integration. The dissertation contends that the war shaped the contours of Central Asian society that endured through 1991 and created the basis for thinking of the “Soviet people” as a nation in the 1950s and 1960s.

Circular tour Belarus During our tour of Belarus, you will become immersed in a mysterious culture, you will get to know the country and people off the beaten track and gain an understanding of what Belarus is all about: a wonderful, friendly and largely undiscovered country. Arrival in Minsk Today you are travelling to Minsk. You will be picked up at the airport by your English-speaking guide. Once you have checked into your hotel, you will go for an evening stroll around town. After that you will have supper in a typical Belarusian restaurant and then visit the Belarusian National Library, where you will have a superb view of the night lights of Minsk from the roof- top. You will be accompanied by your guide and together you will talk through the programme for the next two weeks. 2nd day: Minsk Minsk city gate. Today you will learn more about the turbulent history of the country and Minsk, the Belarusian capital. Your guide will collect you from your hotel after breakfast and together you will walk around town seeing the sights. Your journey through time will start at the first stone church (10th/11th century) and will continue to the Orthodox and Catholic churches built between the 13th and 17th century in the old town centre. In the Troitskoye district you will be able to imagine what Minsk looked like in the 19th century. The town was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War and is still considered today to be the prime example of socialist realism. Unlike the cities of Moscow or Kiev, the entire city centre represents a harmonious ensemble in the gingerbread style of the Stalinist period, the likes of which can be found nowhere else in the world.

BELARUS Belarus Belarus has a highly authoritarian government, with almost all political power concentrated in the hands of President Aleksandr Lukashenko and his small circle of advisors. The Lukashenko regime has engaged in a widespread pattern of serious human rights abuses, including involvement in the “disappearances” of several key opposition figures, the imprisonment of political opponents and journalists, and 155 strict media controls. Human rights conditions deteriorated further after the March 2006 presidential elections, which observers from the Organization for Security and Coopera- tion in Europe (OSCE) and other organizations deemed fraudulent. The government of Belarus also continues to commit serious violations of the right of its citizens to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion or belief. Religious freedom conditions, which had already declined as a result of the strict law on religion passed in October 2002, deteriorated further in the past year. The Commission continues to place Belarus on its Watch List, and will main- tain scrutiny throughout the year to determine whether the government’s record has deteriorated to a level warranting designation as a “country of particular concern,” or CPC. Brest Fortress
BREST FORTRESS Brest Fortress was built in the 1830s at the meeting-point of two rivers, but not much remained from that period. Certainly don’t come here expecting to see medieval architecture – this is a Soviet WWII memorial to the devastating battle that resulted when German troops advanced into the Soviet Union in the early days of Operation Barbarossa in 1941. It earned the title of Hero Fortress for the courage demonstrated by Soviet soldiers when they fought against the Nazis army in 1941. Whilst the Nazis took the town of Brest – 90% of which was destroyed in the fighting – the two regiments garrisoned inside the fortress held out. Today the fortress became a shrine to the terrible and heroic events that took place there. This is a large complex with several museums and one of the most important places to see in Belarus. The colossal war memorial is a dramatic reminder of how WWII and an astonishing piece of work. The centerpiece is a sculpture called Courage, a 33.5 m high soviet war memorial made of stone. It tells a story of the heroic defense of the fortress through a series of carvings. There is an eternal flame which is guarded by 4 teenagers from the Pioneers Corps. The key monument “Thirst” represents an injured soldier trying to get some water from the river. The monument reflects the bravery of the last remaining soldiers who defended the Fortress for many days without food or water. The Bayonet Obelisk, 100 m high, can be seen from any part of the fortress, and is linked to the main Courage monument by 3 rows of tombstones.

Stalingrad imbeds its setting into the ‘IMAX paradigm’ meant to transport its viewers into the fictional but credible reality of the embattled city, which has more in common with, for example, the space station Pandora or Hogwarts.

7 The Journal of Belarusian Studies World War II Memory Politics: Jewish, Polish and Roma Minorities of Belarus BY ANDREJ KOTLJARCHUK* ‘No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten!’ Olga Bergholz, 1960 A popular slogan used by the Soviet authorities in regard to WWII. The aim of this study is to interpret recent trends in contemporary memory politics in Belarus, with focus on the Holocaust, Roma genocide memorials, and the memorial sites of the Polish minority in Belarus. The author believes that the theory of ‘path dependence’ is suitable for analysis of contemporary Belarusian memory politics with respect to World War II. In accordance with this theory, the scope and limitations of new politics are determined by the political choices made or results attained much earlier by the previous political regime. Recent comparative political studies adapt the ‘path dependence’ concept to historical material (Hedlund 2005). From this point of view, a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Belarusian memory politics is not possible without an examination of the Soviet period. In his study on the memorialization of the Holocaust in Poland, Hungary and Slovakia Jeffrey Blutinger defines three basic approaches to contemporary memory politics in Eastern Europe. The first approach, ‘aphasia’, means a virtual taboo on memory typical for the communist age. The second stage, ‘deflective negationism’, means that the Holocaust is recognised, but all responsibility for it is placed exclusively on the Germans. At the same time, the problem of local collaborationism is slurred over.
