Ballard Born and raised on Chestnut Mountain in Wilkes County, North Carolina, James “Jim” Shumate (1921-2013) was a pioneering bluegrass fiddler. His position at the inception of bluegrass places him as a significant yet understudied musician. Shumate was a stylistic co-creator of bluegrass fiddling, synthesizing a variety of existing styles into the developing genre during his time performing with some of the top names in bluegrass in the 1940s, including Bill Monroe in 1945 and Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs in 1948. While the "big bang" of bluegrass is considered to be in 1946, many elements of the bluegrass fiddle style were present in Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys prior to 1945. Jim Shumate’s innovative playing demonstrated characteristics of this emerging style, such as sliding double-stops (fingering notes on two strings at once) and syncopated, bluesy runs.

steve martin albums download The Long-Awaited Album. The Long-Awaited Album arrived six years after Rare Bird Alert, the 2011 collaboration between Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, so perhaps the wait between records wasn't all that long. Still, the clever title also suggests the difference between this 2017 affair and its predecessor: Martin is no longer hesitant to crack a joke as he stands behind a banjo. After playing it relatively straight on 2009's The Crow -- the album where he revived his longstanding love of bluegrass -- a smile started to creep into his performances on Rare Bird Alert, but on The Long- Awaited Album he seems unable to resist any quip that fluttered across his mind. Perhaps this is a reaction to the pair of subdued records Martin cut with Edie Brickell in the mid-2010s, but Martin seems ready to cut loose with jokes and fingerpicking. The Steep Canyon Rangers are ideal foils for him in that regard, as they're fleet-fingered and versatile, and they boast a fine deadpan singer in Woody Platt, who trades off tunes with Martin. The songs on The Long-Awaited Album are littered with references to contemporary life -- references to cell phones, Olive Garden, and Skype calls are threaded into a mosaic of modern life -- and the music feels fresh too, alternating between lilting ballads, funny bits designed for a stage, and the quick-stepping instrumentals that act as the glue binding it all together. Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers specialize in good cheer, and while that means they can sometimes overplay their hand here -- "Strangest Christmas Yet" sticks out like a sore thumb, each punch line landing with a thud -- their act is ingratiating and so is The Long-Awaited Album.

Curly Seckler & The Steep Canyon Rangers A Bluegrass Legend Teams with the Hottest Young Band on the Scene Today! THE MASTER Curly Seckler is regarded as one of the greatest tenor singers ever in bluegrass. In 2004 he was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Hall of Fame. Born in 1919, Curly began his musical odyssey in 1935, performing on radio in Salisbury, NC. Early in his career, Curly worked with Charlie Monroe, Jim & Jesse McReynolds, Mac Wiseman, The Sauceman Brothers and The Stanley Brothers, before settling into his best-known role as mandolin player and tenor singer with Flatt & Scruggs’s Foggy Mountain Boys. Over the next dozen years, Curly recorded well over 100 songs with them, including many of their most popular hits. The Lester Flatt/Curly Seckler duets from the 1950s are still considered to be among the best bluegrass performances ever. Curly remained with Flatt & Scruggs until 1962. In 1971 he recorded his first solo album on County Records, and by 1973 he had reunited with Lester Flatt in his band, The Nashville Grass. When Flatt passed away in 1979, Curly took over leadership of the Nashville Grass for another fifteen years. Though Curly retired from active touring in 1994, he continued to make occasional appearances at festivals and concerts. Still a vibrant, creative, and charming entertainer, in 2004 he made his first new recordings in ten years. Down In Caroline, released on Copper Creek in the fall of 2005, was a finalist for IBMA Recorded Event of the Year. Curly’s latest CD, Bluegrass, Don’t You Know, was named one of the Top 10 Bluegrass CDs of 2006 by The Chicago Tribune.

At 10:45 a.m. today in the Amphitheater, Wiseman will lecture on the most recent as- tronomical findings of how the universe and its galaxies have matured over time, eventu- ally making life possible on at least one plan- et. Then she will ask — just as many other lecturers have in the past week — what is humankind’s significance within this vast and elegant universe? “Through astronomy, we are learning how galaxies began to form billions of years ago,” Wiseman said, “and how these galaxies, full of stars and gas, have changed over time.” When the universe began, the only ele- ments present were hydrogen and helium — not enough to create life. Steep Canyon Rangers re-signed with Yep Roc Records in 2019. “It feels like coming home,” says banjoist and vocalist Graham Sharp of the partnership. “The Yep Roc family was among the first to welcome Steep Canyon Rangers when we were just pups. As we’ve grown, so have they. We’re incredibly excited for the future and all the music it holds.” Steep Canyon Rangers released three albums in 2020, all on Yep Roc Records. The Grammy-nominated North Carolina Songbook is a recording of the band’s live 2019 performance at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in which the band performed a selection of songs by North Carolina songwriters (Ola Belle Reed, Doc Watson, James Taylor, Ben E.
