Fact or Fiction? Name: _________________________ Below is a biography on Amelia Earhart. On the following page is a chart with ten statements. Indicate whether each statement is fact or fiction. Bad Behavior George Herman "Babe Ruth" was born February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents owned a saloon near the current site of Camden Yards in Baltimore. They were of German descent and taught him to speak German fluently. George was actually somewhat of a petty criminal as a young boy. By age seven he was already involved in drinking alcohol and chewing tobacco. Because he was too difficult for his parents to control, George was sent away to a catholic school. It was here, where Brother Matthias taught him baseball. As a teenager, George became the team's catcher and then pitcher. Unusual Talent At the age of 19 Jack Dunn, a scout for the Orioles discovered George's baseball talents. He was promptly signed to pitch for the Orioles. After performing well as a pitcher and a batter for the Orioles during spring training, George made the team. Because he was such a young talent, he earned the nickname "Babe". On April 22, 1914, Babe pitched a shutout against the Buffalo Bisons in his Major-League debut. Because the Orioles were in poor financial shape, Jack Dunn was forced to sell off his best players. Babe was sold to the Boston Red Sox in 1914 for an amount between $20,000 and $35,000. Called up to the Majors After pitching for the Red Sox minor league club in Providence, Rhode Island, Babe was called up to the majors permanently toward the end of the 1914 baseball season.

It is also a rivalry that has endured for almost 100 years. The book features exclusive interviews with former governors Mario Cuomo of New York and Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts, former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, congressmen, reporters, broadcasters, and, most importantly, the many former and current players, coaches, managers, and front-office executives from the Red Sox and the Yankees who have helped keep the rivalry alive. • Yankee Stadium
YANKEE STADIUM Although the new Yankee Stadium mimics the same legendary look and feel of the original “House That Ruth Built,” the $1.3 billion ballpark fea- tures the latest technology, including a “major league” steel coating sys- tem from Tnemec Company. “The coating project was very well planned,” according to Tnemec coating consultant Phil Gonnella. “The coordination between the steel fabricator and field applicator was excellent.” The coating specification was written by HOK Sport in Kansas City, Mis- souri, which is the industry leader in the design of professional baseball facilities and has been for the past 25 years. The project required more than 8,000 tons of architecturally exposed structural steel, which the fab- ricator prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP6/NACE No. 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning. Next, the steel was primed with Series 90-97 Tneme-Zinc, a zinc-rich polyurethane with excellent corrosion resistance. Some of the steel also received a shop-applied coat of Series 1075U Endura-Shield II, an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane that is highly resistant to abrasion, wet conditions, exterior weathering and ultraviolet light. “There was a leadtime of up to one year between the time steel was shipped from the fabricator and the application of the intermediate and finish coats in the field,” Gonnella noted. “Years ago, such a long leadtime might have made it difficult for the topcoat to adhere to the shop-applied coating underneath it. That’s not an issue with this coating system, which is one of the reasons Tnemec was selected for this project. The recoat window on both Tneme-Zinc and Endura-Shield II was very good.” PROJECT INFORMATION Prior to field application, the steel was pressure-washed at 5,000 psi with a zero-degree spinner tip, followed by power tool cleaning at connections and bare steel.

ABSTRACT In March of 2012, Forbes Magazine ranked the most valuable brands in all of sports. Trailing only Manchester United’s $2.235 billion valuation, the next most valuable franchises are Spain’s Real Madrid of La Liga BBVA, and Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees. As the two of the three most dominant brands in all of sports, Real Madrid and the New York Yankees are frequently mentioned in the same context as one another, but rarely discussed through more extensive market research comparing their brand management strategies. By utilizing Kevin Keller’s acclaimed Customer-Based Brand Equity model, the relative strength of the brands for Real Madrid and the New York Yankees will be assessed based on their ability to successfully integrate six core components within their brand: brand salience, brand performance, brand imagery, brand judgments, brand feelings, and brand resonance.

  • List of New York's Baseball Sites
LIST OF NEW YORK’S BASEBALL SITES Major League Stadiums and related sites The New York metropolitan area is the scene of some of the most legendary events and home of the greatest figures in baseball history. From the first recorded baseball game at Elysian Fields in 1846, New York has been the “Capitol of Baseball” for 171 years. New York’s baseball history is written in many places – legendary stadiums, distinctive hotels, ordinary homes. Some of these sites are well-marked and internationally- known – others are marked with small plaques, tiny reminders, or even nothing at all. But every one of these sites listed played a major role in the history of baseball, is worth a visit, and deserves to be known and remembered. Enjoy! 1. Yankee Stadium (161st Street and River Avenue, The Bronx) Accessible by the No. 4, D, and B trains from Manhattan. The new Yankee Stadium, opened in April 2009. Costing $2.3 billion, it stands one block north of the original, on the 24-acre former site of Macombs Dam Park, and incorporates reproductions of many features from the original Yankee Stadium across the street, including the frieze, the Indiana limestone exterior, hand-operated scoreboards, the section numbering, and the unusually-shaped outfield dimensions. New features include a museum of Yankee history that displays Thurman Munson’s locker, a Great Hall on 161st Street, and an accessible Monument Park. Home plate was brought from the original Stadium, and Yankee relief pitcher and future Hall of Famer requested that the team reposition the home bullpen and provide it with a door to link it with Monument Park.

The New York Yankees, Philadelphia/Oakland Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals have won many. The Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and San Francisco Giants endured decades-long dry spells before they finally won the orldW Series. Even expansion teams like the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, and Florida Marlins have won multiple championships. Other expansion teams like the San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers have been to the Fall Classic multiple times, although they did not win. Then we have the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have not been to a World Series since 1945, and have not won one since 1908.
